Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

How can Mexico be in the CCL and Copa Libertadores? Just saying it's not fair that Mexico gets two bites at the apple.

This is the last Copa Libertadores that Mexico will be in for the near future.

Also, they don't get two bites at the apple in the sense that if Chivas were to win the Copa Libertadores, they could not advance to the Club World Cup.

Could an MLS team win CONCACAF in the next 5 years? Absolutely.

Will the MLS be the best league in the hemisphere in 5 years? Doubtful.

An MLS team winning the CONCACAF Champions League would be a real stretch at this point. Each season since the new format started only one MLS team has even made it through the group stage and none has made the semi-finals. The USL actually has a slightly better CCL track record than MLS.

I do think CCL success is the fastest track to international credibility the MLS has. If we can't demonstrate we are better than the FMF, no one will take us too seriously.

I love Buccigross, but stop calling United Man U. Called them United, Man United or Manchester United.

Everyone else does it, and nobody cares about Man U fans' whining on the matter.

We could just call them MUthaF*C*rs;)

Random "offseason" topic: What's your favorite team in any country? While I only consider myself a fan of a few teams there are teams I generally pull for no actual reason, I just kinda hope they win in their country. Here's my list, if I don't name a country, then I REALLY don't care about any of the teams:

I'll start with the teams I'm fan of:
Norway: Valerenga IF
Sweden: Osters IF (They have been mired in the 2nd and 3rd levels in recent years, the team that is consistently in Alsvenskan that I pull for, but am not really a fan of, is Malmo FF)
Netherlands: AFC Ajax
US: NSC Minnesota Stars (I really don't have a MLS team)

I'm kind of a fan of:
Ireland: Bohemian FC

and the others:
England: Nottingham Forest/Aston Villa (I have a Marcus Allback jersey I got for about $12)
Scotland: Rangers
France: AS Monaco (yes, I know Monaco is its own country)
Spain: Atletico Madrid
Portugal: FC Porto/Boavista
Germany: Werder Bremen
Italy: Inter
Greece: Panathanaikos
Belgium: Club Brugge
Austria: Rapid Wien
Turkey: Trazbonspor
Mexico: Cruz Azul
Argentina: Boca Juniors

I think that's it.

Celtic goes down 3-0 today to Braga in CL qualifiers. Time to take away one of the SPL Champions League spots?

Only if they wait for a year where Rangers finishes second. (ie, not this year)

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

It looks like Manchester City is serious about signing Mario Balotelli. Balotelli is amazing. If he adjusts to the English game, he could put City into very serious title contention.

Or he could fall flat on his face like plenty of other City signings.

I'll play along with HumRsky's thread. Here are my teams.

The teams I love:
England: United
Scotland: Rangers

The teams I kinda of like:
MLS: Red Bulls (Despite the cheater being on the team, but if the Cosmos come back, I'll switch.)
Spain: Atletico Madrid
Germany: Schalke 04 (Exchange student I went to HS liked them.)
Tukey: Galatasaray
Holland: Ajax
Argentina: Boca
Mexico: Cruz Azul
Belgium: Anderlecht

I hate all clubs from Italy and France. The players are scumbags. I'll only watch a French game if an American (Bocanegra) is involved.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I would say:

Teams I love:
England: Liverpool

Teams I tolerate:
Scotland: Celtic
Spain: AM or Valencia
Italy: Fiorentina
France: Rennes
MLS: Red Bull NY
Nederland: Ajax
Mexico: Whichever team hurts the other teams the most. Opposite of fair play award.

I am an EPL snob, even if its not always the best league I find the standard of football to be very high and the games very entertaining.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I'll give this a try.

Teams I'm a fan of:
USMNT. There's no club team that can compare to my devotion to the national side.

Teams I follow:
England: Manchester City (as I mentioned, such fandom beginning in the third tier some 12 years ago)
Italy: AS Roma (formerly Fiorentina due to my grandfather being a fan, but I dropped them after Calciopoli... went to a Roma game in 2009)
MLS: DC United, since about 2000 or so. Anticipating becoming a Montreal Impact supporter once they "promote"
Scotland: Rangers (only in America do you find Catholic Rangers supporters)
Int'l: Italy, Germany, England, Netherlands

and the others... the ones I kind of sort of look at from time to time, sometimes:
England: Wigan Athletic/Nottingham Forest/Leeds United/Derby County/Cheltenham Town
France: AS Monaco
Italy: Siena
Mexico: UNAM Pumas

Might be interested in down the road:
England: Tottenham Hotspur
Portugal: CF Sporting

The Spurs/Sporting game I saw on Sunday was probably the best match I've ever attended. Lots of great action both ways

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

The teams I follow are 1. FC Nurnberg and Greuther Furth from Germany.

Otherwise;

Mexico: Club America
Honduras: Marathon
England: QPR & Walsall [I just love that they are sponsered by a Hospice]
Scotland: Celtic
France: Olympic Marsailles [Saw them beat PSG in Paris in 1990]
Dutch: Feyenoord
Greece: Panathinaikos
Russia: Vladivostok [Gotta love the train trips half way around the world!
Switzerland: Grasshoppers
Croatia: Dinamo Zagreb [Visited the stadium before they used it as a morgue. ]
Argentina: Boca Juniors

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Club Teams:

Nottingham Forest (England)
Celtic (Scotland)
Werder Bremen (Germany)
Lyon (France)
NY Red Bulls(MLS)

National Teams:

1. United States
2. Scotland
a distant 3. Ireland

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

My teams:

US: Seattle Sounders? No real interest.
England: No one
Scotland: No one
France: No one
Germany: Probably someone, but I don't know who yet
Norway: Probably someone, but I don't know who yet
Austria: Sturm Graz or Rapid Vien (on account of my ancestors being from Jennersdorf, and these being more or less the closest teams to their part of Austria)
Spain: No one
Italy: Definately no one
Everywhere else: No one

National teams:
1. US
2. Germany/Austria/Norway
(huge gap)
3. Costa Rica/Canada
(huge gap)
4. Netherlands, I guess, but at this point its pretty arbitrary.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

That must really burn you - I mean, since everyone knows Jesus hates Wisconsin.

Well yeah, that's a negative factor.

On the other hand, as God's own club, I feel it's appropriate that he have a man on the ground so to speak. I think JC will be a nice locker room presence.

(Hear he's not that great at dealing with crosses though.)

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Well since other people are adding other teams they like. I am also a Fulham and Stoke City fan as well. Don't really care about any other teams outside EPL, but I will watch if it is a good rivalry game.

As for the national team side I just like Team USA.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

My teams:

US: KC Wizards, I guess. I'd actively support a team in Michigan or Wisconsin, but that will not be happening any time soon.
England: Aston Villa (Premiership), Nottingham Forest (other divisions)
Scotland: No one
France: I have an FC Metz scarf after a good buddy of mine studied abroad in the area.
Germany: The trophy's pretty sweet, but no particular club. Wish they were on a channel I got, because the Mannschaft was fun to watch this time out.
Spain: Never really gotten into La Liga. Wouldn't be Barca or Real if I did.
Italy: Lazio, sort of.

National teams:
1. USA
2. England
3. South Korea
4. Costa Rica

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

So, what teams do you always cheer against?

For me, I always cheer against:

Eintracht Frankfurt

New York Red Bull Salzburg, either one, but I'd cheer for the Metrostars or SV Austria Salzburg

Liverpool

AS Roma

Costa Rica

Serbia
