Yeah, I would think that it would need to be something like around 10 years down the road type planning for a Cosmo's MSL team to happen. Perhaps they could kick around a few years in the USL perhaps, using Red Bull Arena, or perhaps some HS Football field in NYC. There's got to be at least one stadium there that holds something in between of 15,000 to 20,000 right.

NYC is supposed to get a USL side next year I think.

Only thing I can think of (as far as capacity goes, anyway) is Columbia's Baker Field (sorry, "Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium at Baker Athletics Complex"... REALLY, Columbia?), but that has its own location issues, plus it's turf and narrow and surrounded by a running track so I don't know how well it'd accommodate a soccer field.

Cosmos playing at Red Bull would make the most sense. Galaxy and Chivas split the Home Depot Center well in LA, and I'd sure the Red Bulls would love the extra Cosmos dates for revenue purposes.

Other than that, Columbia holds about 18k. Icahn Stadium is pretty new on Randalls Island (triboro bridge area) and that holds 5k in permanent seats, and I am sure they could bring in bleachers. There are also some nice small stadia out on Long Island at Hofstra (15k) and Stoney Brook U (8K), too.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Woooo! Making up your own history by ripping off European teams and giving up on having your own identity! Woooo!

The problem with American teams doing stuff like this is that these names mean something in other languages. In Spain the "Real" (Royal) team were given that distinction by the King of Spain in 1920. Sporting Clube de Portugal is an actual SPORTS club not just a football club. Sporting has about 15 other sports teams in the club. These names just don't make any sense when applied to North American soccer teams. I don't find using FC or United since at least they're in English, and I would mind if teams started using SC for "Soccer Club" since that's what most Americans call it, and it would be somewhat unique in the world. (The only other "SC"s I can think of are Sporting Clubes like SC Braga in Portugal)

Rafa Marquez signs with the Red Bulls, officially. Ew.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

If MLS is supposed to be balanced, why do the big stars seem to always end up in the big markets? The day the Colorado Rapids get someone like Marquez or Henry, I'll be shocked.

Don't they have the same exempt player rule as the big markets? They 1) probably don't want to pay and 2) don't always have a city that would appeal to a bigger name.

The Rapids also only draw 12,000 or so to their games, and have an owner who is more interested in the other sports he invests in. Part it of it might be due to markets, but I get the sense that some markets aren't really trying too hard on their end either.
Forgot to add, those DP spots can be traded. So say Kansas City or someone can't attract a DP, they can trade that slot, and theoretically bring in some decent, if not big name, talent that way.

Edit: Unrelated, but Toronto is down in Honduras tonight in the CCL. Motagua up 1-0 at the half, to make it 1-1 on aggregate. Hopefully the MLS side can pull it out here.

Just not enough aging milionaires who think Kansas City is a cool place to live I guess. For what they are probably looking for in social life and possible endorsements etc. I would think NY and LA are far out in front...maybe Chicago, DC next.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Toronto draws 2-2, Seattle draws 1-1. Both sides go through on aggregate, 3-2 and 2-1 respectively. Two massive results for MLS last night, really good to see.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Clint Mathis is retiring. I'll miss him. :(

My friend: They should have a testimonial for him between NY and LA, he could play one half for each team.
Me: He should play 30 minutes for each team, then spend 30 minutes sulking on the bench with beer and Doritos.

Clint Mathis is magic
He wears a magic hat
And when he sees the match ball
He says I'm having that
He scores with his left foot
He scores with his right
And when he plays the DC scum
He'll score all ****ing night

Clint Mathis is magic
He wears a magic hat
When asked to play for Metro
He says I fancy that
Beer in his left hand
Doritos in his right
And when he's sitting on the bench
He'll whine all ****ing night :D

(I may have gotten those a little wrong. Sue me. :p)

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I don't know why they are having friendlies so quickly after the World Cup. Harry Redknapp was right in his rant about having the World Cup, 1 week of the English season and then friendlies. Get a few weeks in before having internationals.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I know the horse is already bloodied and dead, but hey I'll take another swing.

Anyone want to justify the inclusion of Findley in that roster?

This should be good. I was hoping Davies would be ready to rock, but I guess he's still on the mend.

Harry has little to complain about. His extended tour of the U.S. with his squad takes far more out of it than a few players playing one international friendly. Typically silly Harry talk.

Big picture there are too many international friendlies, and at times that don't make sense, but clubs could make it easier on themselves if they didn't tour the world and all during the summer.

You still do need a few club friendlies to get the bugs worked out and to build chemistry, but your point about touring the world is correct.
