World Championships: U18 and Women’s

What, Hockey Canadumb over-thinking things again?!? Who would believe it?! LMAO. What a bunch of dummies!

Way too many great players with no opportunity. Potomak back in after a 5 year time out. Maybe just 3 more years for Gabel. Almost like Hockey Canada should have been investing in creating more opportunities for elite players eh? Like a pro league? Which brings us back to your statement...

lots of online coverage for this tourney so far.
Of note in here is that both the US and Canada’s contracts with their federation expire at the end of this month.

Canada beat US 3-1 in prelim play yesterday. US outshot Canada but Canada got 2 power play goals that proved to be the difference.

looks like the tourney games are on NHL network in the US. I looked on espn+ but didn’t see anything. CoNtinuously subscribing to NHL Network is massively inaccessible cost wise, and add dropping for a month jacks up my already high existing price I pay to Directv. I’ll look for a one week streaming trial...I know others will watch via VPNs. Not an ideal approach for getting viewers.

PHF announced today that they renewed their espn+ deal for 2 more years. Clever timing of the announcement imo.

I suspect there will be the usual valid complaining during this tournament about lack of visibility in the US of the best in the world. this is something that should be addressed in the contract negotiations. Lack of Visibility was a tenet of the threatened boycott in 2017 and it remains a problem. It’s awkward that the U18 Worlds was more accessible to watch than Womens Worlds. I know people are trying, but it is frustrating.

both the NWSL and NCAA WBB had
announcements recently about getting their marquee games on Network tv in prime time. Absolutely fantastic news for them and a reminder that women’s sports is trending in a positive direction as a whole, but the powers that be in women’s hockey ought to figure out a way to advance visibility along with the other women’s sports. I’m curious if the players prefer their games on NHL Network vs ESPN+. Does the former get them more eye balls than the latter? Is it something about not allowing too many tsn productions on espn+? Is a mix of espn+ plus ESPN cable channels for games too far of a reach for USA Hockey? That’s essentially what the NHL has.

Did the coach ever make it to Denmark? I don't find anything one way or the other. The official photo was taken today so I guess we'll know once we see if he's in it or not--

he’s there it seems.
will you be watching the games? I just signed up for nhl network again....

Some things I am excited about:

1- watching Poulin and Knight. They aren’t going to be around forever.

2- TSN coverage.

3- The Athletic has staff over there writing. That’s a first time.

4- Worlds in an Olympic year, 10 teams instead of 8.

It is definitely weird that these players play so few games outside the IIHF sched, I’m tempering my expectation a bit about quality of play to begin with. Nonetheless it will be fun.

For some reason I just can't get mentally into these series. Usually I'm pretty juiced about the international tournaments.

Interesting to see Vermont has 5 players in this. Perhaps big things should be expected of them this season.

Thanks for compiling this list; here's a couple of additions.

The digital coverage is great.

Today’s group A highlights:
1- Taylor Heise with 5 assists, my goodness. US wins 10-0 over Japan.

2- Mikkelson scoring in a 4-1 win over Finland in her return to Canada’s lineup. Mikkelson’s first time playing for Canada since 2018. A baby, a blown out knee and a pandemic in between. And publicly all the grace in the world when she didn’t make the 2022 Olympics. How can you not cheer for her?

3- Poulin’s goal was so nice. Classic Poulin, the opponents lose track of her and she gets the puck. A seam appears with the help of her teammates and she picks a corner. Never gets old.

Sooooo if you are a Knight fan like me you will be pleased to know she just scored at worlds. 82 points now all time for her. 83 for Jayna Hefford, 86 for Dr. Wickenheiser.

Thought this link was fun...US either holds the edge or is tied with Canada in each category.

Some takeaways:
1- first the obvious, it’s blowouts galore. Not exactly compelling hockey but there are things to appreciate if you are so inclined. Let’s start with TSN - 2 things: what the production does is make it so you don’t HAVE to live on a message board or Twitter to follow the sport. Enough said. It’s glorious. Secondly, I saw a Nadal quote the other day about Serena retiring. He said something to the effect of “I hope she sticks around the sport when she’s done. Sports are better off when the legends don’t disappear when they are done.” So true and TSN is enabling some of them in women’s hockey to stick around. It’s something that’s been missing.

2- Knight watch.. yes she is there to win gold but the record chase is fun. She potted 2 today so she’s now tied with Hefford and a point tomorrow moves Knight into second all time. FUN. She’s looked fine throughout the tourney, had probably 4 chances at least vs Finland, and set Keller up real nice today (she missed), was the source of the Bilka goal from behind the net, was the screen on Bilkas first goal the other day. Knight is still very much a factor.

3- by my count 8 of the American skaters still have NCAA eligibility. Great appetizer For the NCAA season. Bilka, Barnes, Heise, Harvey, et al, they are all looking great out there. On the Canadian side of course there’s far fewer, but Fillier is leading the points race, with new linemates nonetheless.

4- I paid much less attention to the Canadian games, I think the biggest question was how Fillier would do without Spooner and she looks very comfortable, clearly. On the US side they are creating a ton of offense from below the goal line. Super fun and reminiscent of 18/19...but one expects Canada to do a much better job breaking that up than everyone else. US hasn’t endured any shots against hardly let alone any physicality. Would not be surprised if Canada tries to run some people over when they try to get set up behind the net.

5- Last thing, I was looking up when Knight played her first Worlds....it was 2008, just 3 years after Granato retired, and they let Knight wear jersey 21. Would that still happen today? I’m not really a numbers geek, I don’t think I like retiring numbers, but I can’t help but notice when the other American woman hall of famer retired no one on the senior team wore her jersey number for a decade. Did USA Hockey know Knight was special? Do they know the same about the new number 4?

Canada US tomorrow ... it’ll be a good one. Frankel in net? I hope so.

Nope. Hensley. Frankel is not dressed.

End 1
Canada 2 (Fillier, Shelton)
USA 0

After 2
Canada 2
USA 2 (Keller PPG, Pannek)

Bummer. Prob not going in in the elimination and medal rounds.

I see they changed the US’ second goal yesterday to Harvey , which gives Knight an assist. 2 points from tying Wickenheiser, after 2 periods today.
