Wjc 2024

I thought Detroit had been rumored at one point, but maybe I made that up. Windsor is next door, London is only two hours away. LCA for the main venue, Yost for the smaller one.

Funny to think Anchorage and Grand Forks have hosted more recently than Minneapolis, the palace in North Dakota notwithstanding as the reason they hosted.

Anchorage hosted around the time they were bidding for the Winter Olympics.

In the article they mentioned Thief River Falls being a secondary location when Grand Forks hosted... So a High School rink hosted the same tournament that is currently using NHL venues?

Ha ha ha.... Only in MN.

I think the capacity requirements for the secondary arena are surprisingly low, but I can’t remember them off the top of my head. It had to be confusing having both venues be named Ralph Engelstad Arena, though.

Check out the Thief River Falls’ rink. It was also funded by Ralph Engelstad - it’s where he was raised. It’s pretty much Mini REA.

Never mind. I forgot that they avoided said confusion by calling the Thief River Falls REA “Berghof” and the Grand Forks REA “Kehlsteinhaus.”

There’s a thread about this on HFBoards and there’s some interesting posts from Finns. According to them, the Finnish Hockey Federation has basically become complacent after their recent wins and things have cratered. Apparently, their coaching is a real mess too.

Well I know a retired Finnish player that could step in. Just as soon as he finishes repoing all his ex wife and kids toys, house, car, and eventually settles the custody battle over the kids which is now taking place in Finland

Having attended the 2020 WJC in Ostrava and seeing the seating capacities in Gothenburg, the Ralph and Scheels Arena in Fargo are pretty much the same size as those in Sweden.

It's also a similar capacity to Halifax and Moncton from last year. The hope would be that US & Canada are in the same group, so all those games can be played in the Ralph.

Obviously, you'd have more than the 2k-3k Canadian fans that travel to the ones in Europe, but I have questions about even the one in the cities selling out.

I found an old article when Minnesota was first putting in a bid, and it did mention MN was most concerned about Seattle and Detroit putting in a bid because they were border cities. Whether Detroit actually did put in a bid is not known.

I think it's 5,000 (at least nowadays).

I thought I read the primary rink minimum was 15,000, but obviously that wasn't the case last year. Maybe it was a USA Hockey requirement for the 2026 bids.

I did confirm IIHF requires two rinks for any international tournament with more than 7 teams, and no more than two rinks.

The host country is allowed to request one change in the groupings. The second time it was in Buffalo, because the outdoor game had to have USA vs. Canada, the USA requested those two countries must be in the same group.

Typically when the tournament is in Sweden or Finland, those hosts request the other country be in the same group.

Now that I think about it, Detroit probably wouldn’t work. I mean, it can work, but realistically it wouldn’t. The Ilitches probably wouldn’t want to give up the Wings NYE game, the Pistons are playing there now so that’s two teams that would have to vacate for 2-3 weeks, and they pack a few concerts in there during the holidays as well. That’s a lot to give up.

All the more reason to flee the larger venues.

The Xcel Center won’t be a sellout except if the US is in the championship game, but even then I have my doubts. Mariucci is probably the right sized location if you want the arena to appear full for a well-attended game.

Don’t get me wrong, the entire US defensive corp looks weak today.

but every game I’ve watched- is lane Hutson always this bad defensively? I know he’s supposed to be an offensive Jesus but it’s like he can’t play defense. Last year when the hobey hattrick was announced the BU fans had absolute meltdown he wasn’t there. It took all of a few shifts in the semi for the gophers offense to make him invisible.

Hes young but I guess I’m picking on him because all you hear is that he’s the best there is
