Wjc 2024

This is something I say every couple weeks during hockey season, but dang the Wild really messed up when they made their practice rink so small. I get that it was cheaper, but cripes it would have been nice.

The 2026 tournament is hosted by USA. Rumor has it, USA Hockey is going to announce the site at this year's tournament in Sweden. Though, they don't have much time to do that...

From what I have gathered, the three finalists are St. Paul/Minneapolis (Mariucci Arena), Seattle/Everett, and Vegas/Henderson. I know St. Louis put in a bid, and supposedly it was a good one. But if the rumors are true, they didn't make it far enough.

All the local NHL teams are behind their respective bid. Which of course is a good thing since they will have to abandon their building for two weeks.

Obviously, the first two choices would make the most sense, with Seattle being the closest to Canada (I'm still not convinced this tournament can be very successful without the Canadian market). However, I wouldn't be surprised if Vegas makes an offer USA Hockey can't refuse (i.e., $$$$).

Anyone else hearing anything?

Back at the beginning of the college hockey season, the NCHC had their media day at Xcel Arena in St. Paul. Brad Schlossman tweeted that while they were in the bowels of the arena they came across some material, like signs and other written material, that referred to the "World Junior Tournament St. Paul, 2026." It was enough for him to speculate at that point that maybe a decision had already been made.

Well, at least it’s not Buffalo.

The first time in Buffalo, it did fantastic. Including the non Canadian and American games. I'm sick and tired of people dumping on Buffalo for hosting it.

The second time was a mistake because it came too close to when Toronto had a portion of it for two of the three previous years. The Southern Ontario market was tapped out. Which is why I keep saying it -- don't be surprised if even Minnesota turns out to be a disappointment. Without Canadian fans, the WJC simply does not draw ... no matter what country/city it's in.

I think this is a test for Minnesota and the tournament. There have been complaints over the years about going to Buffalo and that Minnesota should get a shot. Something that isn't without merit as the state has shown plenty in interest into lower levels of hockey and really hasn't had a chance to host in the modern era (can't really count Grand Forks).

If Minnesota hasn’t hosted since 1982, then I think them getting it before Vegas and Seattle makes sense, despite it being less sexy of a location for many. It may actually be attended here by locals and not just canucks.

is there a capacity requirement along with number of rinks? Do Vegas and Seattle have enough infrastructure? They clearly must as finalists

Seattle has Climate Pledge Arena plus smaller arenas for WHL teams in Everett, Kent, Wenatchee, Spokane and Tri-Cities.

IIRC Climate Pledge and the one in Everett were the ones in the bid.

I’ve been to climate so I assumed that but wasn’t sure about any other rink. Climate only has two flaws that I noticed- capacity and parking/traffic but obv not dealbreakers for the wjc.
