Wjc 2024

Finland flirting with relegation. Weird.
There’s a thread about this on HFBoards and there’s some interesting posts from Finns. According to them, the Finnish Hockey Federation has basically become complacent after their recent wins and things have cratered. Apparently, their coaching is a real mess too.

I wish Germany would drop the gold shoulders. They have a top three all-time bad guys get up when they do.

I prefer this mic drop sweater:

That's something I don't need to see if I'm Bobby Nystrom.

Finns beat Latvia 4-0, so they’re safe from relegation. Looking like Latvia will be going to that round barring an upset of Germany. Seniors versus juniors, but this has to be a bit of a buzzkill for Latvia going from bronze in Worlds last spring to getting outscored 20-0 so far.

The other group has Czechia, Switzerland, and Norway still in contention for relegation, though Norway is definitely in the drivers seat there.

Cornell's Marian Mosko logs 17 minutes on 28 shifts and is +1, as Slovakia beats the snot outta Norway and moves to 3-0, leading Group B.

Next up is the New Year's Eve game with the US (2-0 pending outcome against the Czechs) which could well decide first in the group.

US throttled Slovakia 10-2 to take the group.

And yesterday Latvia blew out Germany 6-2 to drag themselves out of the relegation zone temporarily. Now Germany, who started off with the statement win against Finland, needs to at least take the Canadians to overtime to avoid the relegation series.

The 2026 tournament is hosted by USA. Rumor has it, USA Hockey is going to announce the site at this year's tournament in Sweden. Though, they don't have much time to do that...

From what I have gathered, the three finalists are St. Paul/Minneapolis (Mariucci Arena), Seattle/Everett, and Vegas/Henderson. I know St. Louis put in a bid, and supposedly it was a good one. But if the rumors are true, they didn't make it far enough.

All the local NHL teams are behind their respective bid. Which of course is a good thing since they will have to abandon their building for two weeks.

Obviously, the first two choices would make the most sense, with Seattle being the closest to Canada (I'm still not convinced this tournament can be very successful without the Canadian market). However, I wouldn't be surprised if Vegas makes an offer USA Hockey can't refuse (i.e., $$$$).

Anyone else hearing anything?

I think a joint American WHL franchise bid would have been brilliant. Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Everett, Kennewick, Wenatchee. Play the early rounds at the four small venues and the knock out in Portland and Seattle. Help the league and spread the wealth.

You can only have two venues. Must have two. Not more than two. Kind of like the holy hand grenade (with three)...
