Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2024-2025

We don't need any help from anyone to beat da stinking gophers.
Thank you. If your team is even half as good as I expect that they are, it is beneath a fan base to be begging for help when it's all over but the math.

I just threw up in my mouth.

I don't think anyone should panic with the scoring. I'm more of a stay the course person. Win the the face-off war, don't pass the puck to the opposing players and tie up/clear out players in front of our net and everything will be fine.
"tie up/clear out players in front of our net" is the most concerning piece. Faceoffs and passing are things we control and getting this done has varied/will vary throughout the year. People think they can beat Wisconsin by creating a logjam and hammering people in front of the net. Until we make them pay, they'll keep doing it. KK has obviously made addressing this one of her missions lately but the whole team must get onboard. It is a mental and physical toughness thing that we may or may not have. We better get it if we don't.

I didn't get a chance to watch with much attention the last 2 periods of game 2, but it was nice to see the sog tilt heavily towards the last 2 periods. Looks like the coaches made adjustments/got the message through. I did notice a couple breakaways allowed however.

The third period in particular was a bloodbath in terms of control of play. UMD was clearly running out of gas and desperately tried to hold on, but trying to do that against us is really playing with fire. Even before Laila finally broke the ice I said to my wife, "this is only a matter of time".

It was nervous though because we've all seen those "its a matter on time" games end where time wins. She actually showed some emotion when she scored.

McNaughton is having one heck of a year.

From what I could tell, the only line changes were flipping Kelly and Laila, correct? I hate that they just post the same line combos on line that they had for the game before even though they were not the same.

I think Scannell with O'B and Simms some, as well.

You better worry about the other rodents in the conference. The WCHA schedule has Bemidji playing in the NCAA finals. I guess they know something that we don't.
At this point it's not impossible to happen.

Senior day coming up. You tell us to show up early, get in your seats early but they don't open the doors early. That always annoys me.

Hopefully we get Lacey back next year.

Eden is listed on the 'press release' for Senior Day, which is unfortunate but understandable.

And so is Marianne Picard! She had a medical hardship year in her freshman year, in 2021-22, and so has eligibility for next year. We've seen players 'chance their minds' before, but for now she's apparently taking part in Senior Day.

I do believe there's precedence for people to be honored a seniors but come back correct? Chayla comes to mind, possibly OB?

Yes, both O'B and Kotlowski took part last year, then 'changed their minds'. Also Maddi Wheeler was included last year, so maybe Picard is thinking about a masters degree somewhere else, along with more playing time, etc?

I think Picard could see a more prominent (higher line) role somewhere else, but I don't know about playing time - MJ does a pretty good job with line rotation/balance. Wonder if she stayed she'd be inline for a 2nd line job?

Looking ahead - 2025-2026 Roster would be something like - (class by eligibility?) - All decidedly unofficial an more as a conversation starter. Incoming freshmen are from my list over a year ago - so not sure it's accurate now:
Seniors:
Marianee Picard? F (C)
Kirsten Simms F (LW)
McKayla Zilisch F (Utility)
Laila Edwards F (RW)

Caroline Harvey D
Vivian Jungels D

Juniors:
Claire Enright F (LW)
Cassie Hall F (C)
Kelly Gorbatenko F (LW)

Laney Potter D
Ava Murphy D

Ava McNaughton G
Chloe Baker G

Sophomores:
Maggie Scannell F (C)
Hanna Halverson F (RW)
Finley McCarthy F (LW)
Bella Vasseur F (?) - UW roster has her as a Sophomore, but pretty sure she'd be a redshirt from medical last year right?

Emma Venusio D
Grace Bickett D

Incoming Freshmen:
Charlotte Pieckenhagen F (?)
Adela Sapovalivova F (LW?)
Nicole Gorbatenko F (?)

Rachel Gorbatenko D
Mackenzie Jones D

Rhyah Steward G

Unknown: Lacey - Does she have eligibility left?

So line combos could be:
1st
Simms - Hall - Edwards
2nd
K. Gorbatenko or Sapovalivova - Picard or Scannell - Halverson
3rd
Sapovalivova or K. Gorbatenko - Picard or Scannell - Enright
4th
N. Gorbatenko, Vasseur, Pieckenhagen, Zilisch, McCarthy

D pairs
Harvey/Jungles
Venusio/Potter
Murphy/Jones or R. Gorbatenko
Occational Subs: Jones or R. Gorbatenko / Bickett

Goalies
Ava and Rhyah eventually get to a split time situation, Chloe backs them up

Unknown: Lacey - Does she have eligibility left?
Lacey Eden would have eligibility for next year if she chose to use it. But by the end of this year, she will have already spent 4 1/2 years as a college student, and I assume will be able to play in the pro league. So it would be understandable for her to forgo that last year of eligibility.

Yeah the stupid PWHL is going to deny us another year of Eden. That sucks as the forward group next year will have ALOT to prove. It may be a tough year on the scoring front.

I don't see McNaughton doing much sharing with Stewart. Ava has been lights out playing as good as we've seen any UW goalie play and as good as we think Stewart will be, she's not going to come in here at that level. I wouldn't mind her getting some bottom 3 starts, but that is it. I look at it as a Rigsby/ARD thing, where ARD had to wait for her turn, or play when Rigsby was hurt. If she loses playing time to Stewart after proving beyond a shadow of a doubt she a #1, other coaches will come a calling and she'll end up in the portal her Sr. year.

I really dislike playing a quality opponent on Sr weekend. Focus has to be 1000% on those players in those putrid colored uniforms. It won't be there.

Yikes looks like Murphy and Potter are injured. Please no long term injuries. Decent period for UW. Might be a long period for the other 4 d.

Didn't see what happened with Murphy, I'll have to go back and watch the tape. Potter looks like she just took the wrong end of a good hockey play. Despite 18 in maroon being involved, which the odds tend toward a less than good hockey play.
