Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2024-2025

Didn’t see Maggie Scannell on the ice after drawing a penalty and going down on the ice/into the boards. Also didn’t see her in the handshake line. Hope she is ok.

No Scannell in the lineup today.

Added: Per TM: "Maggie Scannell is out of the Badgers lineup and day to day with an upper-body injury."

They have blown play dead early three times in the first 15 minutes when the puck was very not covered by the BC goalie. Very frustrating officiating.

BS penalty against Picard but the Badgers score a shorty and played a better period overall.

What's the rule on DQ's? On the Friday ESPN broadcast they said she had to sit Saturday. Looked like she showed up in the Saturday's box score with an assist.

The ESPN broadcast missed the subtle difference between a game misconduct and a game disqualification. A game misconduct is for that game only, a game disqualification adds another game to the suspension. Picard got a game misconduct so she was allowed to play in the next game.

Well, the warmup games are over, and the seemingly annual obligatory injury has occurred. The more serious business begins with UMD next weekend followed by MN in Minneapolis the week after. O’Brien, Simms, Edwards, Eden, and Harvey appear to be in form. Gorbatenko looks like she has taken a big step forward and the other returnees seem ready as well with the return of Enright an added boost. The rookies showed flashes that suggest they soon will provide added punch. The one concern is the exact nature of Scannell’s injury and the prospects for her recovery.

But the next two weeks will clarify where the Badgers stand and their prospects for the season ahead. I am looking forward to the outcome - and a speedy recovery by Scannell.

Very enjoyable beating down the once proud Eagles.

Gorbatenko looked really good playing C on the 3rd line after Picard was erroneously tossed from the game.

Yeah UMD is battle tested. The key will be how UW reacts to having to defend a more sustained attack. They were looking not so good in game one with BC on a few occasions. I did not see game 2 to comment on if they improved or not.

So it looks like we need to cross our fingers and hope that CHL players will be allowed to play in the NCAA?

I don't believe the league she is playing in currently is part of the CHL ban. I think that applies to only the top three leagues. But since she has played in exhibition games in one of those leagues as an unsigned player not sure how that's interrupted.

I wouldn't think they wouldn't recruit a player who would be ineligible to play for them.

This is correct. The current regulations only affect players who play in regular season or playoff matchups in the WHL, OHL, or QMJHL.

The article threw me for a loop when I saw she is playing in the Maritime Junior Hockey League. Last year the Q changed their name to the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

Anyone need tickets for either game against Duluth on Saturday or Sunday? I have an out of town wedding and have 2 tickets for anyone who wants them for the sold out series.

No comments about today's game against UM-D?? I thought the game was closer than the score, and that Ava made some excellent saves. I was happy to see the fourth line get some time to take pressure off our top lines. Coach will have some teaching points after breaking down some of the defensive lapses, but overall, I think the team played well against a stout opponent. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game. (We may lose some of our crowd due to an overlap with the volleyball game.)

I agree that the game felt closer than the score reflects. There were some very sloppy passes early in the first period, but they seemed to tighten everything up as the game went on. Looking forward to seeing how both teams adjust for tomorrow.

The adjustments are going to be fascinating. UMD has to push to control the puck more, but at the same time we killed them in the transition game yesterday so that's something they have to be cautious about.

I expect a number of early penalties as well; the refs are going to try to get control of the game after things got awfully chippy in the third. Or conversely, we're about to see a real knife fight of a game.

I'm thinking that "adjustments were discussed and made" during the first intermission. The second period was quite different than the first.
