Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

I watched the PWHL game between Boston and MN last night on Bally Sports. The game was played at the U Mass – Lowell Tsongas Center which seats 6500 for hockey, and it appeared to be close to being sold out and the fans were enthusiastic.

It was very entertaining – classic hockey featuring lots of speed and skills, none of the physical chippiness that is standard in men’s hockey. The men should take notice of the lack of a single instance of high sticking, for me an all too frequent infraction in men’s hockey. Perhaps they could ask for lessons on how to avoid it.

Bally will be airing PWHL games throughout their season, something they should be commended for. The league also has strong support from the NHL and several investors with major holdings in other sports as well. This league got a late start this season, so teams will have only 24 regular season games, I believe followed by a championship playoff ala the Stanley Cup. I prefer their style of play and will be watching their games whenever they are available. Hopefully they can start earlier next season and play a more robust schedule.

Building a new league definitely will be challenging and require patience. But perhaps it is worth remembering that the NHL initially had only 6 teams for years also.

I'm interested in the league, but at this time I just don't have the personal time capacity to tune in to watch some games, too much else going on that is a higher priority. Bally is going belly up, so I wonder how that will affect them being televised.

Let's go RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of the PWHL games are streamed on YouTube. Those streams are attracting 15-18,000 viewers and the chat function is surprisingly entertaining, too.

Sultans Of Swing and Africa, while nice songs, are not juice songs.

BADgers are lacking chemistry.

The second goal by Eden was an absolute zero angle snipe. I haven't seen a shot that great since Wattage. I also recall that Mauerman had a shot like that once as well. I think LE's second goal was a off the corner snipe as well but I haven't seen it replay to confirm that.

Kotlowski did her best part to do the Harvey personation with three assists. A nice game by her.

I know today they will be zigging and zagging in a more coordinated fashion than last night. It was just kind of an annoying game last night with the crowd, the music, and the rust.

Merrimack I thought played pretty good game as well. Credit to them. The only had two coaches on the bench which was very interesting. The assistant coach was a really actively coaching those players during the game. She'd wave one player down to her who just got off the ice and they have a little conversation. They had little national flags on the backs of their helmets which must been showing their country of origin which was interesting. I saw two players from Finland. That was pretty cool, it ranks right up there with BC having ponytail notches in the backs of their helmets.

I was interested to see if Enright would be in uniform after the Christmas break. The fact that she wasn't probably means medical hardship year, out of uniform for the rest of this season?

Now that was a great period hockey. Murphy's dumb penalty allowed Merrimack to get their first sog late in the period.

Yeah sure looks like Enright's not going to be playing at all this year. In the long run that kind of makes sense. Gorbatenko got a lot of ice time as the spotted extra forward and she was very noticeable. I don't know if they can rearrange the third line and have her be on it with Woz and Wheeler as in can anyone of those three be a center?

Foe some reason, next weekend vs St Thomas got switched from Friday/Saturday to Saturday 3 PM/Sunday 2 PM. OK...

... except just announced, the Packers play their playoff game vs Dallas at 3:30 PM Sunday.

If they hadn't changed hockey, it would have been A-OK. Now they'll quite likely be a ton of no-shows. I wonder why they switched it.

Very interesting problem that came out of the blue. The Packers don't have a realistic chance to win, so I think many will watch the hockey game and then go home and turn on the game if it's not a bloodbath. Dallas should score over 40, the Packers maybe 28. I'm not sure what I will be doing.

Harvey was sick and injured, I am wondering if she'll play this weekend. No reason to rush her back.
Murphy loves the crosscheck. That needs to stop. She got nailed for 1 and could have had 2. She has a physical edge which I like, just ditch the 2 hander.
Britta obliterated a player on Saturday on open ice. I guess the refs thought it was incidental contact, they both just ran into eachother. It was a beauty by NHL standards. She didn't extend an arm or elbow, she just brick walled her.
LE was really showing some vision I had not seen before. Not every attempt clicked, but it was a new side of her game. Everything she does out here looks so effortless.
Simms needs to shoot more and dangle for a better angle less sometimes. She dangled herself out a a few great looks over the weekend.
UW used a very interesting cycle forecheck Saturday. They rotated in bigger loops that I'm used to seeing and more interestingly they did it further up the boards and not in the corner. Doing the cycle further up the sideboards allowed them to then cut into the middle at the top of the faceoff circle or higher or at the faceoff dot at the bottom of the cycle and be in a good shooting spot. If you cycle in the corner in a tight circle, if you come out low you're just behind the net or below the faceoff dot if you come out high. It reminded me of something you'd see the Russians doing in the 80's.

FWIW: The Las Vegas 'money line' (as opposed to the point spread) says the Packers have about a 25% chance to win.

Men's hockey is at the KC at 7pm on Friday. They likely switched it after the men's schedule came out because you can't have both hockeys going in both buildings simultaneously.

I don't remember what the game time had been, but they only sent out the email about the change last Friday. I'm guessing the men's game was scheduled sometime before last Friday?

I had to check because I had these times in my calendar long ago, but they announced the St. Thomas game times on Twitter on October 13th: https://x.com/BadgerWHockey/status/1...100241043?s=20

I didn't see whatever email you're referring to, but these games have been on these times for almost three months.

(For the final time this season; next year digital tickets only... )

I get my tickets sent as print-at-home pdf files. I printed them all out when they were emailed back in September (probably). And the printed pdf files for this weekend's St Thomas series say Friday for the first game and Saturday for the second game. The email received last Friday was to notify me/us that the dates had changed, and the Friday ticket would be good for the now Saturday game, and the Saturday ticket would be good for the now Sunday game. No game times were listed on the pdfs.

Likewise for the St Cloud series, BTW. Pdfs say Friday/Saturday, and the same email told us the Friday ticket is good for Saturday game, etc.

Maybe they held the email notification until closer to the actual game dates? Because otherwise people would be more likely to read it back in October and then forget by the time the weekend finally arrived in January?

(If I had loaded a digital ticket into my Google Wallet, etc, back in September, what would it say now? Can they reach in there and change it without the owner of the device and "wallet" taking some action? That'd be kind of creepy.)

I uploaded the balance of my tickets in early December to the wallet and the Tommy ones say Saturday/Sunday, though I uploaded them in order and now the Sunday ones are listed before the Saturday ones, so yes they can change them without you knowing. It's just the beginning.

That may explain why I didn't get the email; they probably sent it only to people who selected Print-At-Home and received incorrect pdfs.

Yes, they can change it, because it's linked to their system which is why the ticket works in the first place. It's also why you can download all your tickets but if you transfer one on the UW Badgers app it deactivates in your Google Wallet.

The volleyball tickets this year were actually a single ticket that changed before each game. (They called it All-in-One.)
