Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

MJ recently mentioned the possibility that he might retire in the relatively near future to assist his wife with a project that has been an interest of hers for a while. Basically, he indicated he felt she deserved the opportunity to pursue a major personal interest of her own as their focal point after supporting his career for many years. An exact date was not stated, but kudos to him for acknowledging her contributions for his stint as head coach.

When MJ does retire, the question becomes who might be the choice for head coach to replace him. Koch or Crum have been with him for years and certainly have made substantial contributions to the program’s evolution and its underlying culture. Both certainly would warrant attention. My personal preference for the next coach is for a woman, and Crum would be acceptable if interested. However, I admit that I also am interested in several others.

One of my alternatives. which I raise with caution, would be Muzerall. I acknowledge she perhaps is more than a little controversial. But she is a very good coach who has been giving the Badgers fits in recent years. She gets a lot out of her players, and I think it would be interesting to see how her style of play would translate to the UW. All that said, I believe she is totally invested in continuing to build OSU into a program that eventually will match the histories of MN and WI. Ergo, she would have no interest in the move.
But, there also are two others closer to home - Meghan Duggan and Brianna Decker – both of whom have experienced tremendous success as players for the UW, the US Olympics teams, and in women’s professional hockey. Duggan also has become director of player development for the NJ Devils in the NHL, and Decker has assumed the position of associate head coach at SMS. Both would bring tons of experience and a deep understanding of the nature of the game and personal playing histories that would appeal to recruits, and they understand the culture of the UW well. Likewise, their careers suggest they would approach the job with lots of energy and focus.

I acknowledge that I may be missing other possibilities as well, and I expect there will be others interested in the position. Regardless, when the search for MJ’s replacement occurs, there should not be a dearth of qualified applicants. And the list of applicants will be another tribute to what he has built for the UW.

The thought of MJ retiring makes me want to throw up. I would want Crum to get the job and bring in Decker to handle the F's. Koch is the associate head coach however, one would assume he would get the job based on that. I'd be okay with that as long as he kept Crum. Then he'd have to bring in a person to handle the defensemen.

I probably wouldn't mind Muzzy or Frosty either, but they're not the top choice.

When did he say this?

Wow! Is this Timothy A approved? Speak to us, oh great one!

I've been doing a lot of thinking.....I'd hire Muzzy, like throw an obscene amount of money at her to make her leave (like the Cubs did with Council), and have Stone and Miller be the assistant coaches. Miller would be the associate head coach.

Imagine trying to take a picture of those three. Their heads would be too big to fit into a normal shot. You'd have to do something like a panaramic photograph to get them all in the picture.

Dang...That is a lot of ego to fit into one room.

Good for him in acknowledging that hockey isn't the only worthy pursuit in life. So many people never get the opportunity for that next phase, e.g., his own father passing away at 60.

Does Wisconsin need another Rawhide Ranch especially in the Madison area? How many months will go by before MJ gets bored to tears with this endeavor and gets back into coaching hockey?

The top choices should be Katey Stone or Shannon Miller...

As an opposing fan wanting the best for the sinners I'll use the Mandalorian motto...This is the way.

With respect to these two nominees to replace MJ.

The link below is an article about some extensive, extremely negative charges about Stone’s treatment of players over multiple seasons. While Harvard initially had decided to retain her as the head coach of its women’s team, they apparently changed their minds. They recently announced that they have replaced her with Laura Bellamy who served as UMD associate coach for the past 4 years. Frankly, given the extent of the complaints by Stone’s players, I was surprised Harvard did not dismiss her. She certainly is not someone I would consider as a coach for the Badgers.

Shannon Smith, on the other hand, certainly had an outstanding career as UMD’s coach which included 5 NCC titles. She left UMD and joined two other women coaches in a 2015 lawsuit alleging discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, age and national origin, and that UMD created a hostile work environment. The suit was settled in 2018 and she eventually was awarded a settlement of around $4.5M which included $2.4 in legal fees leaving her with $2.1M. She now is 60 and likely would be nearing 65 if not already there depending on when MJ retires. She would be worth consideration if she were somewhat younger.

So, I still prefer Crum, Muzerall, or Duggan, or Decker.

I am 100% certain that was a joke.

That is excellent! This is why I asked.
Sarcastic? Who you calling sarcastic? I can't wait to meet Timothy at Ridder, and hang a Gopher jersey on him for a blackmail photo.

You forgot Nate Handrahan...He isn't too busy these days to take a call from the sinners.

Thanks for posting the link. I hadn't seen that article. Looks like a great project. They are looking to open in 2025, depending on fund raising. I can't imagine MJ will have any troubles raising the funds to do this really great non-prof program. Age-wise, he can't see himself going into his 70's and he's 66, so the clock is ticking.
