Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

McNaughton almost gets her head lopped off her body no call and no review.

Gorbatenko has a great nose for hockey.

So Wilgren owed you one? She just paid it back.

She didn't owe me anything but she did owe Mcnaughton something. That was a pretty bad play for somebody who's playing in the US national team to make.

From the game before I don't think I've seen a softer goal than the one that Gervais let in on that long shot. I think I'm ready to make Ava the starter.

The Badger d got corner turned way too often in this last series.

I would love to know what the conversations are like between Curl and Murphy when they get together to play on the same team.

I suspect there will be fisticuffs in the lockerroom. Plus there are like five more Badgers there.

I have only a few takeaways from Saturday’s game. Friday's action thankfully left me speechless allowing me to concentrate on forgetting.

I think Gorbatenko’s performance deserves a promotion to one of the full 3 FLines justified by:
  • Recognizing a path to the goal existed, a sign of a good ice IQ.
  • The skills she demonstrated on her shot - the speed, control of the puck, and then flipping the puck in the net while sliding on her chest. Impressive ones indeed.
  • Her overall play – speed, activity around crease, contributions to D.
My first preference would be to try her on the line with Curl and Eden. I think her overall style of play would fit nicely with them. This would open the question of where to move Hall for whom I would like to see a trial with Simms and O’Brien because I believe her style also would be a good fit that would yield dividends for all 3. Obviously, this would mean moving Laila to the 4-player rotation of line 3. But I simply feel the offense needs more consistency than has been evident recently with the exception of Saturday (in which Gorbatenko play a major role). These steps might help give it a boost. That’s my two cents and I acknowledge my view may not be worth even that much. As it turns out, it also is my last 2 cents. So, I’ll refrain from further comment on the topic.

I have to add that Wilgrin's sliding save on her stomach was incredible as well. I feel safe in proposing that this is the first instance in women's college hockey in which two players made key plays while sliding on their stomachs - perhaps even one let alone two. Truly remarkable stuff.

Tale of the tape for the goalies thru the first half. Each has played each opponent once. Gervais gets game one of each series.

Gervais 1.78 gaa / .908 save % 5 ppg allowed 0 shg allowed 7-2
McNaughton 1.39 gaa / .936 save % 1 ppg allowed 1 shg allowed 7-2

The 5 ppg allowed by Gervais jumps out to me. Your goalie has to be your #1 penalty killer.

Would McNaughton be able to maintain those numbers playing both games each weekend? Would they get worse? Would they get better? What would the numbers be if McNaughton played first game, and Gervais played second?

You completely read my mind. I'd be in favor of her doing game one and Gervais doing game two to start the second half to see how it would go for a bit. They could split time all the way to the NCAA championship game if that's the way it works out.

Yes. Good for O-B for sure. Always nice for new players to get opportunities. But seriously. Is it possible for USA Hockey to look at any other program other than Wisconsin? Is that 7 (!) girls on the rivalry series roster? I know the Wisconsin faithful on here are ecstatic, but hopefully, even you can see the absurdity. There will never be parity in women's hockey until players from other teams get recognized for what they are doing at less-heralded programs. Again, Wisconsin is a fantastic team with amazing players, no doubt, but there are other players...

How these players are chosen is somewhat of a mystery, isn't it? Only a few years ago, it seemed like Minnesota dominated the team numbers. I admit that I attributed it to the coach's Minnesota roots. And Wisconsin folks will probably remember forever when Annie Pankowski was inexplicably cut at the very last moment. Choosing teams at any level must be a delicate combination of politics, stats, availability, and eye of newt. I just hope it turns out to be a great team and that everyone has a chance for some ice time.

Twice. Two consecutive Olympic teams.

What I’ll remember as a hockey fan of Pankowski’s:

back to back game winners when Harvard came to town.

shorty in the national championship game to win it

Goal and shootout goal in the 2019 gold medal championship game at Worlds which secured the Drive for Five consecutive world championships.

The interesting thing is while her goal in the 2019 championship is the one going on the highlight reel - and rightfully so - it wasn't "the game winner". The final score was 2-0, and her's was the second goal. Norby to Shaver was the first goal and the technical "game winner". Pankowski's goal was closer to a "clincher", but even at that, a two goal lead in hockey is never safe.

She had been having a sort-of ordinary good year, and then went on a goal scoring binge in Feb and March, really carried the team to the championships they won that year.

-------------

I looked it up: she had 17 goals during the regular season, and then 11 goals in 7 games in the post season.
