Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

I though KK looked really good: quick, agile, won a race to the puck for an icing, had a one-time from out at the blue line on target, and a wrister from 15 feet out on target for the upper 90. The goalie stopped both shots but they were very much on target. No indication at all of the injury or layoff that I could see.

Yes KK looked like..... perfect

You could tell Duluth had played last week in Wisconsin did not. The third period and most of the second period Wisconsin really got control of it.

Really happy to see Jane play really well.
It was kind of funny, every time you watched Britta come off the ice after a shift she just seemed frustrated. It seems to me that Wisconsin wasn't as decisive in their shot selection as they could have been. A little too much stick handling and maybe one pass too many more than a few times. Laila showed a lot of speed and stick handling that we have not seen before, very interesting...

A little nugget in TDM's game story was that Vassuer looks to be heading for a redshirt, while Enright has a chance to play at this year.

OK, a split with the Bulldogs. A defensive battle until the 3rd period. No comments yet? Thinner infusion time?

Today a couple rebounds found waiting Duluth sticks. Maybe it's something McNaughton can improve on, maybe just one of those days. This edition of the Bulldogs, good defense, good goaltending, not as much offense as recent years.

Just a couple of pluses to comment on about the UMD weekend:
  • Great to see Harvey back and in form.
  • Some encouraging signs about Laila getting more active with more speed, some nice stick handling and taking several crisp shots from the slot area. Perhaps Hilary Knight gave her some tips on how she can better use her skills and shot at the recent Rivalry Series week. I hope this continues.
On a less positive note, the performance of the offense continued to be less than scintillating. Both games against StT were much closer than expected and the ones against StC weren’t decided until late (though StC is much improved and always tough at home). Finally, the most goals in any of the last 4 games has been 3 with the others totaling 2, 1, and 0. Against UMD, the PP was 0 for 8! As a whole, not a harbinger of success next weekend at MN.

Frankly, I think MJ should consider a shakeup in the current FLines. Changes I suggest are:
  • Woz/Picard replacing Laila on the Eden-Curl Line. I feel Curl and Eden would benefit from a more aggressive player as the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] member on their line, possibly the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] member as well.
  • Hall with Simms and O’Brien. Hall came in as someone viewed as very good at distributing the puck, something which has not materialized. Putting her on a line with Simms and O’Brien might serve to kick start this part of her game, possibly O’Brien’s scoring as well.
  • That would leave Woz/Picard, Laila, Wheeler, and Gorbatenko to share the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] line. And I would like to see the 4 get equal minutes in part to further Gorbatenko’s development.
I am not an experienced coach and don’t have detailed working knowledge of the details underlying optimizing the performances of multiple individual players. Ergo, I may be overreacting, But I feel that something needs to be done to improve the performance of the offense. A disturbing trend has developed akin to last year. The Badgers have 8 more with OSU, MN, UMD and 2 with StC. I fear they could lose another 5-7 games which could cost them any seeding for the NCAA tournament. I dearly hope the outcomes in MN prove my fears are unfounded, or it will be woe for me.

O
n Vasseur and Enright, I share the view that Vasseur will be redshirted. As for the prospects for Enright playing this season, I think that she would have to start doing so soon or it may become a decision between preserving a full year of eligibility or sacrificing possibly more than half of this season's eligibility in the hope of salvaging a favorable outcome for it. I think she is a quality player, but as matters now stand, I don’t think it would fair to put the second part of that decision on her shoulders.

Didn't really have any time to say anything. Got home from the game, ate supper, then hopped onto the Packers game.

Poor d zone coverage on those rebounds which were pretty juicy. I'd love to have a former goalie or curtain goalie talk about how you control the rebound on the shot off your leg pads. I don't think there's much you can do, but maybe there is.

O for the weekend on the power play, not good.

It was good for Curl O'Brien and Eden all to score this weekend,. Upper classman have to produce for Wisconsin to go far in the national tournament. I think Gorbatenko needs to be in the top of nine forward rotation.

L Edwards should go into a Gorbatenko-like rotation for a while and Gorbatenko should be given a normal shift. Let them compete for playing time and see how they and the other players respond.

I thought Laila was progressing really nicely so I'd like to keep her in the top 9. She was even out killing penalties. It would be interesting to see Gorbatenko on the third line on a regular shift to see if she can't bring a little more offensive juju to that line or stick her in Halls spot and then slide her down two line three.

Assuming Enright does play this season, where does she fit in? They still will be 1 player short for the 4th line no matter where she slides in.

The pp needs shots off the pass from the point at ice level to create the same kind of rebounds UMD scored on. They should almost be shooting for the leg pad save with players on the left and right of the goal. Shoot off the pass so the defenders can't square up and block the shot.

If Enright can handle faceoffs, she could slide easily into the Picard spot. Picard has looked strong since the injury but she tends to take inopportune penalties.

The penalties Picard took on Sunday were inopportune. Penalty or not, she has demonstrated a lack of discipline in other instances. Picard is a capable player and I appreciate her feistiness. Without enough players to form a fourth line, MJ has hard choices to make. It will be interesting to see how things pan out.

What was Wilgren doing in that Gopher goal? She just about backed up into the badger net, never closed space on her. Lame.
