Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

They would be co-champs.

#1 seed for the WCHA tournament would first be done by 'head-to-head' comparison. And if UW were to sweep to cause the tie in the standings, they would win head-to-head 7 points to 5, because the second game at Ohio was an OT win for the Buckeyes; 1-5 in points at Ohio and then 6-0 in Madison. Of course, there's a long ways to go before then

Ok, so no goal differential type of a thing breaks the tie, got it.

Listened to Posick interview KK, here are the highlights.....

KK comes from when she was born her older sister could not pronounce Caroline, it just came out KK. She does go by Caroline in formal situations.
Her injury late last year was significant, they considered surgery, but she responded very well to the other means to heal up the injury.
When she was recruited, she first met MJ at her official visit, only Krum and Koch did any face to face recruiting prior to that.
When she was being recruited, she only mentioned that NE was interested in her beside WI, and that she was interested in Providence due to the location, but when WI comes a calling.....
He asked her if she'd consider leaving UW early to play in the PWHL, but she said she wants to win at WI and get her degree.

I started listening to the Scary Alvarez podcast with Eden and Wilgrin, but he called hockey games matches and did no homework on the players to prep for the show, so I stopped listening. He was just more interested in wise-cracking than anything else.

I'm usually pretty lenient on the BTN+ broadcast but this guy in Mankato is so unprepared its ridiculous. He's not sure why KK Harvey played so few games, and thinks Chayla and Laila "might" be sisters. Names in general have been rough, as noted by center Cassie O'Brien and the thousand pronunciations of Wozniewicz

Well, I missed watching the game live, but I want to try and watch it today. I want to see the troubling game play out. They can afford no oopsies at this point.

Per the Hockey News, WI has 3 of the top 10 performers from the U18 Tourney....#2 Sapovalivova, #5 Scannnell, #10 Venusio.

I suppose that means that the #1 player was Josie St Martin, as the yuckeye poster told us she was their pick for tournament MVP.

Oh wait...How can this be? She was not even in the top ten and even finished behind a tunneler recruit at #12.

I suppose it's because these Hockey News folks are just plain not very good at analyzing players. Yeah...That's the ticket.

Reminds me of the time when David Huckalo was on a line with Dany Heatley and Steve Reinprecht, 2 future NHLer's at UW. David racked up a ton of points playing with those 2 guys, then not so much afterwards. I'm not saying Josie will fall off the map, but Mr. Kennedy understands this situation acutely.

Mr. Kennedy did irritate me a bit when he said Scannell would get lost in the shuffle of high end F's at UW, implying she should go somewhere else to get more personal glory. I think as the C of the US team, she is acutely aware of what she is getting into at UW.

UMD will be a tough series coming up, UW can't afford to drop a point if they want to keep the Muzzinators sweating until the last game of the season.

Carla MacLeod must be in the mix to succeed MJ. Hockey is an international game. Recruiting and developing players from North America only is not sustainable. Carla brings that element. The current staff, minus MJ, does not.

Carla MacLeod should absolutely be the first phone call when Johnson retires; there's an argument to be made between how she made Team Japan and then Team Czechia incredibly competitive in short order that she's as good a coach as there is on the planet. Every single one of her players raves about her. The question will be can you lure her away from the pro game, and what concessions you have to make in Olympic years.

First off, we don't know if this is a thing we'll have to deal with in five weeks, or five years.

But you don't think Dan Koch and/or Jackie Crum are going to get first crack at the job?

Dan is the associate head coach, so I would assume he's going to get first crack at it. He and Jackie do most of the recruiting so I don't think when MJ does retire there's going to be a massive recruiting issue. Plus a lot of these young players don't really know much about Mark Johnson as a studly hockey player, especially the foreign ones. They see Wisconsin as a hockey powerhouse, a fine learning institution and a great city to be a part of. Dan handles the defenseman so his replacement would be somebody defensively knowledgeable. I do think Dan Carla and Jackie would all be great options.

I absolutely agree that Dan or Jackie would be excellent options, and I also agree that Johnson has built the program to a point that with LaBahn Arena and all its banners and alumni and history has a foundation that's just unlikely to drop off without a bizarre several years of spectacular underperformance. There's also just the reality of Madison is not a hard city to recruit to in the first place.

But I also know that in MacLeod you have a 41 year old coach with Wisconsin ties who is succeeding wildly in places that hockey success just does not happen. She may want to focus on PWHL Ottawa (imagine a world where Daryl Watts is on your THIRD LINE) and the continued development of the Czech National Team but I think you at least pick up the phone.

Daryl Watts is not back to being the offensive force we remember from her time in Madison. Maybe she is knocking the rust off after retiring to pursue a career in commercial real estate.

Outwardly, Carla says Daryl will get there. For both, I hope it is true.

Jackie Crum gets a favorable mention in this article.

Crum's line was used by MJ this last week and we've all heard that one before out of him. As long as you are putting yourself in position to get opportunities, that's all you can ask for. The puck will go into the net at some point.

The games this weekend are on broadcast TV in the Madison area, 15-2 Friday and 15-4 Saturday. The BTN thing is totally a game changer for seeing them play. Too bad they don't get higher quality play by play and analysis, but I'm just happy to be able to see them play.

Bigger news is legendary play by play man Paul Braun and Greenie will be broadcasting for the radio the games from St. Cloud on. I may have to figure out how to listen while I'm at the games; Braun is a must listen and Greenie's style is similar to Braun's old partner Bill Howard. It will be a magical pairing for the ears.

I am toggling back and forth between a competent radio broadcast from a Duluth perspective and the inept feed from Madison. I am glad someone has found a way to keep Greenie on the air. Gosh, I miss him and Reid! It was a crime to break up that pairing. Are these stations saving money by hiring these people? Doesn't the loss of listeners outweigh anything they save?

The one guy on the badger broadcast just said the Badgers might move Caroline Harvey to center or wing to juice up the scoring. Are they out of their effing minds? They literally are making stuff up as they go. I'm so glad these dudes are done in a week or two.

That was a master class and how to close out a 1 goal game. You would have thought Wisconsin was the team down by one. Great job.

When you play UMD it's a battle of inches. On the UMD goal Helgeson got beat just enough where the shooter had a good look at Gervais. Obviously Wisconsin was missing Murphy yesterday who was ill, she's had a great freshman year to this point defensively. I think they've got to keep that d bench pretty short today. There's really no margin for error, it's going to be another score two goals and hope you win day. Hopefully Murphy can play today.

Watching the UMD video highlights, Gervais had some really big saves.

If he wants if I could see them giving it to John Wroblewski. Decision for him is if he wants to stay on the women’s side or back to the men’s.

Seeing Jinelle Zaugg on the bench at St Cloud today, I think her name rates a mention in the discussion of potential MJ replacements.
