I had the exact same reaction. I didn’t realize this was how it worked
The "extra year" was an inducement for players and schools to take the chance on playing during a year when nobody could predict how much of a "year" it would turn out to be. Take the chance, if it all goes to hell you won't lose a year of eligibility, and if it turns out more-or-less OK, then you get rewarded. The Ivys chose to not participate, so they don't get the extra year.
If the NCAA hadn't set it up that way, LOTS more schools and players would likely have opted out. And not just in hockey.
(Didn't see a second of the game; up to my eyeballs in volleyball this weekend. I know the score and that's all. Unhappy face.)
