Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2021-2022

Been fighting injuries all season, that have affected lineup rotations and overall effectiveness. A couple wins that felt like trips to the dentist, but all's well than ends well. Who knows what happens in the NCAAs? Their fight to the end abilities could carry them a long ways, or fail them too early. I'm living it with a "que sera, sera" point of view.

(NCAA scheduling probably means I miss both Minn hockey games next weekend, though!)

Once you are in anything can happen. Seems like their tough schedule has prepped them as well as can be hoped for.

I will miss the Saturday rodent tilt. My wife's last remaining Uncle has passed away, congestive heart/kidney issues. He was 89. The funeral is Saturday. She is so sweet, she said I could skip the funeral and go to the game, but I told her hockey is absolutely meaningless at a time like this. Uncle Earl was a great man, a great example for the 52 year old me to follow.

Anyway, shutting off the tears for a bit, UW is coming off the bye and MN coming off the loss to Colgate. Friday night is going be awesome, I love the night games, it feels bigtime.

Chris Dilks is reporting 5-11 17 yr old Kelly Gorbatenko of the Chicago Mission U19 has committed to WI. He says she should be one of the top US F's at the U18 this winter. Apparently she has younger sisters, Rachel and Nicole, that are also good at hockey on the Mission U14 team. On Wisconsin!

That would give UW 12F, plus SS if she decides to come back.
With Jungels on board, they have 6 D, plus LaMantia is she decides to come back.

Gorbatenko is a 2023

Sorry to hear that. I like my reason for missing hockey this weekend a whole lot more than yours!

But it occurs to me that I have a single ticket to each game this weekend that I could pass along to anyone here who needs one (through the badger ticket app, etc.)

Saw the 2022 US U18 Roster...Badgers are:

G - McNaughton, D - Potter, F - Edwards, Enright, Gorbatenko, Simms, Hall

I saw no Badgers on the Canadian roster, kind of a bummer as far as I like keeping the Canadian pipeline open. In fact I don't see any Canadian players coming into UW period!! Maybe a result of Covid/travel over borders or they are getting their primary targets who all happen to be US born? A very interesting development.

Colgate recruited a couple of the top Canadian 22s early on. Fargo is good at that. Some Canadians are either going to East coast schools or Canadian schools, which is unusual and likely due to Covid-related factors. Covid is not a factor with UW’s 2022 recruiting class, however, since they were recruited years ago, before the recruiting rule change. KP has her handprints all over the ‘22 class.

It's interesting that we don't know when they actually committed, but Watts you are saying makes sense. Some recruits we know years ahead like McNaughton, Web and O'B, others get sprung on us later out of the blue like Helgeson and Kotlowski. Would you mind telling me who is "KP" person is?

Bad news....Nealy is out for the year. At least they have 6 D left, and they could probably survive with 5, but let's not go there. As far as her play goes, she was completely un-noticeable, which as a D is the ultimate complement. She was doing a 1 year post grad program, so MJ said he wasn't sure on her future. I guess that implies she could RS if she wanted to?

TDM wrote a nice story about Pettet dealing with T1 diabetes since her mid teens.

LET'S GO RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

Timothy A, MJ said that Nealy is out? I missed that. Press conference? Nealy brought experience and size to the D so we will miss her. At least we do have some wiggle room there.

TDM reported it in the WI St J/Cap Times/Twitter link, though it was a little buried. Yeah I'd say its a big loss just for the reasons you stated. They could try and get Buchbinder enrolled for the spring semester, but then you would not have her all next season. I vote for running with the 6 D they have now and having Buchbinder for all of next season.

Funny side note, when I read that I blurted out "OH NO!" and my wife said "Watts wrong!?" I said "Nealy is out for the year!" She just shook her head and told me I was a weirdo. Again.

Really bad news about Nealey.

Keep in mind that Cornell, and Nealey, did not participate in the 2020-21 "COVID" season, and so do not qualify for the bonus year of eligibility or the extention of the "time clock" on using eligibility. So her only path to playing next year is a true medical redshirt, and then the question becomes 'has she already played too many games this year to qualify?'. No more than 30% of the team's regular season contests, IIRC. And I think she's past that, even though she missed a weekend (?) already this year.

Ah, I hadn't seen the article yet. Natalie B and Grace started together (remember how they played together in the NCAAs as freshmen!) and so Natalie might be lured back this year if she's not sure she wants to spend all next year in school. When Annie was cut, she came back and practiced with the team but didn't rejoin it until the following year. I wonder if any of the other WI players who are centralized might be cut this month? It was not good to see Abby R in a cast--

So wait a minute. If your school shut your season down completely, you get no extra year, but if you played you get the extra year? Does that not seem completely twisted?

I had the exact same reaction. I didn’t realize this was how it worked

Interesting that Maddie Posick is listed in the pre game lineup as 3rd line left defense pairing with Sophie Helgeson with Toft as the extra defenseman. I don’t think she has ever played D. We will see if she gets more time than Toft
