Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2021-2022

That Drake goal was awesome. Not fancy by any means but counts just the same. Gotta love it when a big goal comes from a role player.

Only 10 forwards for Wisco today... usual number is 11, correct?

Injuries to defense Nealey and forward Picard earlier in the season has UW playing somewhat short-handed. Forward Maddie Posick has shifted back to defense, and Delaney Drake was added to the roster only after those injuries occurred. I don't know why Drake wasn't playing earlier - whether it was her choice or Mark Johnson's, etc; I know she had ankle surgery after last spring, so maybe that contributed to her not being on the roster in the fall. But glad she's there now, and healthy, and glad she was "rewarded" today.

Nice win for the Badgers today. Struggled in the 1st period with about 4 offsides, 2 icings and a lack of puck control. Q was definitely the better team in the 1st period. Periods 2 and 3 were controlled by the Badgers and they ended up with a shots on goal advantage of 38-28. Q tied it in the 3rd on a defensive give away by Maddie Posick. Casey O'Brien had a beautiful goal on a short handed breakaway to put the Badgers up 3-2. Drake and Wheeler (open net) added goals for a 5-2 victory. I expect the Badgers to come out and be crisper tomorrow from the get go. While Q is a pretty good team, the 2nd and 3rd periods showed the Badgers certainly deserve to be the #1 team in the country.

Thanks for the explanation. Impressive of Posick to convert back to D as well. Short bench but what they do have sure is impressive.

Yeah once they got their sea legs they had the better of the play. I was just super happy to see them get out of the first period not losing. It was rather shocking to see Q give up so many odd player rushes. You never see WCHA teams do that. Sadly UW did not score on any of those other than the SH breakaway. How can the PP be not good? I'll never understand it.

Posick with another bad play in the d zone where her and Webster were back but they had no clue Watts to do with the puck, luckily Q did not score.

Watts with ob and web the whole game.

Posick with another bad play in the d zone ...
Your team is short bodies on the blue line. One of the role players is forced into taking shifts at D to help the team. One would expect that a player who is playing somewhere that is not her natural position is going to make some mistakes. Do we really need to point them all out?

I said in another thread it's the coach's call to send her out there and yes she is doing the best she can, and hats off to her for playing D. It's scary when you are playing an important game like that to see players put in dicey situations. MJ would say they are building for March, and they are, but winning now is part of that. There are plenty low leverage games to continue her development as a D and I look forward to watching her development.

I wonder Watts precipitated the Watts/Wheeler switch-o-roo. The posted lines for yesterday did not indicate the change, seems like a last minute thing or the SID was just lazy.

I would like to see a replay of the Watts penalty in OT. From Watts I saw, it looked pretty BSie to me (and a lot of other UW fans who were there). The Qer was stickhandling trying to buy time and she just went down then Watts got the puck. She was gonna bury that puck.

I'd also like to see a replay for the Q goal to see Watts happened that she was left unmarked right by the net.

MJ only used Bowlby and LaMantia as D in the OT. That was interesting. They kept alternating between the 2.

I find it curious that SS does not kill penalties. I just don't think all is right with her physically.

The penalty on Watts, while not a 'big' hit' in any way, still had to be called. Watts hit the Q player from behind with her stick while holding the stick in a classic 'cross-check' stance.

Yeah, it was soft contact but a mental mistake by Watts to be doing anything like that there.

Do we know who actually signed letters of intent for Wisconsin? (And will Tella Jungels be a Badger next year, with her sister?)

Super great question about the letters of intent. I asked TDM about the letters of intent for the women's team when the men's were signed and he said he was working on it. We need to know!

Apparently Tella is in the portal according to the darkside posters. I don't know if UW needs another role playing F.

We are expecting Jungels, Edwards, Simms, Holloway, and Enright?

Plus Chloe Baker and Caroline Harvey. (Plus--we hope--returners Curl, Buchbinder, and Eden.) But it seems late, even for WI, to be announcing the actual letters of intent.

I could not recall Baker's name, thanks. Harvey, Curl and Eden are locks to come back since they have "normal" eligibility left, Buchbinder could be done if she doesn't want her 5th year. And UW gets Picard back who hopefully has 4 years left with the injury/possible redshirt.

TDM told me last night "coming this week, I believe". I'd bet he knows but he won't publish it until UW releases the info.

I'm torn on going to the exhibition tonight. It would of course be fun, but living an hour away on a worknight....IDK.

Why is the #1 team in the nation playing a D3 team? Padding the point tallies eh?

Thinking MJ did not want another week off, so they lined this up. It's an exhibition, so I assume the numbers won't count. To get in you need to bring a children's book, so that is a nice thing for the community. And I think the Eau Claire kids will get a big charge out of playing in LaBahn against some decent competition. Should be a win for everyone involved. MJ is a class act.
