Wisconsin Recruiting V - Does it even matter?

I think right now, I'm truly only focusing/banking on the kids that sign NLIs, especially with the change in rules with respect to team contact with a recruit. I've always been particularly annoyed with the NCAA recruiting in the past...family handlers/appointed reps (really?) drumming up a recruit and kids committing when they are 13/14/15 yrs old is a joke. This is especially true when the great majority go to play juniors for a year or two before college. As we know, juniors actually helps these kids with the speed of the game adjustment in college and really is a proving ground for those that are "commits". I imagine there are a lot of guys that don't pan out in juniors and fall off the recruiting wagon. With NLIs, it's much more of a identification of top end talent. I'm a fan, and it prevents (theoretically) kids from jumping to Major Juniors like opilka. I think it's pretty clear now, most 1st/2nd rnd NHL picks are only sticking for a year or two...which is to be expected, three if something really happens. I don't want to give TG too much credit, but with his NHL feeds, he can probably hold off NHL teams from pulling a guy if he feels they aren't truly ready. Which would benefit recruiting...again, theoretically.

Yeah, until the NLI gets signed we never truly know who is coming. Morrison has has 2G 2A in 4 games with the Okotoks Oilers. As we have seen with the Holloway and what I have read online, the AJHL guys really don't NCAA blosssom until year 2.

Urdahl ended up on the 3rd line for Des Moines. Looks like the AJHL fired back up and the Calgary Canucks had 22-23 recruit Brett Moravec as the top line C in the line-up.

Urdahl has now been playing left wing on the first line for Des Moines. When I looked at the USHL site it has him 34th in points. When I sorted by goals I realized he is tied for 9th in the league in goals...

Urdahl and Laatsch played in the Bio-Steel All Star Game the other night. Their team got smoked 7-1 and neither dented the scoresheet with even a shot. Just a negative plus/minus.

Really hoping Holloway decides to play one more year at UW. They could really use him.

I figured it was a matter of time before he ended up on the top 2 lines. They weren't going to trade for a guy and keep him on the 3rd line.

Malmquist has been on the top line for his team as well.

Ceulemans has been out of Brook's line-up. Hopefully nothing serious. He has 4G 7A in 8 games. UW is going to need a true PP QB next season. Malmquist lit the lamp for the Oilers last night.

Forward Carson Bantle is transferring from Michigan Tech to Wisconsin. Onalaska native that played at Shattuck. He'll be a Sophomore. 6'4" left wing.

6’4”? If he plays with the right physicality, I can see the path for him to crack the lineup then.

His freshman numbers didn’t look like much, but there’s always potential. This season will (maybe) reward the workers more than the scorers.

Ceulemans is playing for Canada in the WJC U18

My goodness that PPG he scored shooting off the pass down by the boards on a pass from the center top D a few days ago was wicked. I think he shot it through the goalie it was so hard. The sieve had no chance to square up on him.

Stramel is accelerating and coming to UW after next season per Milewski. He is not draft eligible until 2023. NoDak and BU were the other schools in his top three. I saw elsewhere he was the youngest player on the US World Junior Team (maybe Milewski wrote that also). He put up 2-2-4 in 5 games there. Moved from U-17’s to U-18’s in January. Played Center at WJC.

I guess I don’t remember anyone playing at the USNTDP that was there 3 years, but that would have been his case if he did not accelerate...

Article mentioned above: https://madison.com/wsj/sports/colle...20112c0ac.html

Chris Peters describes him as one of the most unique prospects he has seen come through the NTDP. He also indicated he was great on faceoffs at the World Juniors, had a bigger role than expected as the youngest player on the team and his role grew as the Tournament went along.

There is talk on GPL that William Whitelaw may be considering UW as well https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/603194/william-whitelaw

The acceleration has me slightly concerned. Will he be physically and emotionally ready for the bigtime? On the other hand, maybe he will be here 3 years then.

Based on his build 6’3” and 209-215 lbs. already, and the fact that he will have played a year and a half for the UNSTDP U-18’s it should not be a problem physically. Chris Peters’ report from the World Juniors indicated that physically he was a force in the World Junior Tournament with guys taking runs at him and bouncing off with him barely moving.

Emotionally or at least mentally, the fact that they are playing him at center as a 16-year old at the World Juniors and he earned more time as the tournament went on all indicate that he gets it. It doesn’t hurt that he has the best instruction in the world either...
