Wisconsin Recruiting V - Does it even matter?

Man...looking at the new recruits I realized how far my interest in badger hockey has fallen. I recognized one name CC,...

ugh

I'm really drooling over Corson Ceulemans wearing the Cardinal and White. Hopefully he's a bit more D first as in sound defensively in all 3 zones and O second than the recent highly regarded D. He's been playing above his age in high pressure games.

Doesn't seem like a sexy pick-up and with a bit of a glut @ F before the possibility of Sr's coming back it's a bit of a head scratcher, but we'll see how it develops. The thing we have learned this year is it helps to have first rounder F's on the team. After those guys leave, I don't know who else in the pipeline is that kind of player. I will have to do some digging.

Zach Urdahl has been traded from last place Lincoln to 4th place Des Moines in the Western Conference of the USHL.

Looks like Robby Newton is no longer with Sioux City in the USHL. He is now on the Janesville Jets NAHL roster.

TJ Koufis’ profile does not list UW as his next destination on Elite Prospects any longer, although his Twitter profile still says he is committed. He appears to not have utilized his Twitter account in 3 years though.

IMO one of the HUGE differences for UW going forward is that they are no longer bringing in players before they are ready and are instead giving them the time they need or an extra year in Juniors to develop. Bringing in guys like Gorniak, Donovan and others straight out of high school was desperation and stupid in my opinion. Importantly, the staff seems to have learned from and rectified their previous mistakes. Getting players that are a little bit older who have had an additional year or two for their bodies and game to develop will be a big benefit for UW going forward. This is even more important next season as they will have a lot of players to replace and will need to get contributions up and down the lineup.

Thanks for the heads up on Urdahl. I guess I need to follow Des Moines now to the tweeder.

Great point about letting guys develop in the USHL. We see the benefits with guys like Stange and MdSP who don't at all look out of place out there as Fr. It's really dumb to bring a guy right in from WI HS hockey. I've always thought that. I don't know/haven't seen enough MN HS hockey to judge the level of intelligence on that front.

Haven’t added to my “decommit” list in a while (last one was Bohlin in November). I’d imagine Koufis is teetering on going elsewhere. The Newton development is interesting.

I guess I should ask about some of Glen’s “Potential Future” players that I thought had actually committed but now I’m not sure if they’d actually be a “decommit” if they end up somewhere else: Helgeson, Lavelle, Roepke, Palodichuk, Horbach, etc

And on top of the 155 F committed is the idea that some of the Sr's may be back? What an interesting offseason this will be.

Urdahl ended up on the 3rd line for Des Moines. Looks like the AJHL fired back up and the Calgary Canucks had 22-23 recruit Brett Moravec as the top line C in the line-up.

I think right now, I'm truly only focusing/banking on the kids that sign NLIs, especially with the change in rules with respect to team contact with a recruit. I've always been particularly annoyed with the NCAA recruiting in the past...family handlers/appointed reps (really?) drumming up a recruit and kids committing when they are 13/14/15 yrs old is a joke. This is especially true when the great majority go to play juniors for a year or two before college. As we know, juniors actually helps these kids with the speed of the game adjustment in college and really is a proving ground for those that are "commits". I imagine there are a lot of guys that don't pan out in juniors and fall off the recruiting wagon. With NLIs, it's much more of a identification of top end talent. I'm a fan, and it prevents (theoretically) kids from jumping to Major Juniors like opilka. I think it's pretty clear now, most 1st/2nd rnd NHL picks are only sticking for a year or two...which is to be expected, three if something really happens. I don't want to give TG too much credit, but with his NHL feeds, he can probably hold off NHL teams from pulling a guy if he feels they aren't truly ready. Which would benefit recruiting...again, theoretically.
