Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Did anyone mention that Geoffrion got assigned to the Admirals? That gives me a good reason to check them out this year.

MCR Jr works at MSOE's Kern Center and recently the Admirals held a scrimmage there. He reported to me that Geoffrion looks..."awful ****ing good!"

(I don't know where that kid gets that language.) :D

Timothy, I'm here, just reading the site a couple times a week up until now. Just bring it.

Reading a couple times a week? *** is wrong with you? You're not some crazed dude checking the site in the am, at lunch and at night before bed? I'm losing a little respect for you....;) At least you haven't vaporized like 60min, Cons and Joey.

It's going to be the year of the goalie for UW. Us former goalie dads will be proud of what we see.

Is tomorrow Friday yet?

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Forwards from practice....

F Jordy Murray-Craig Smith-Mark Zengerle
F Podge Turnbull-Derek Lee-Tyler Barnes
F Patrick Johnson-Sean Dolan-Ryan Little
F Jason Clark-Michael Mersch-Gavin Hartzog

Love the 1st 3 lines; 4th line is an iffy deal, but that is to be expected with all the new faces. Clark may be replaced by Meuer; he was injured in practice. I would think the pp groups will be the Smith and Lee lines.

D pairings from practice....
D Jake Gardiner-John Ramage
D Justin Schultz-Craig Johnson
D Eric Springer-Frankie Simonelli

These are unchanged from the scrimmage. Can't really complain. Springer is a Jr and Simonelli played college teams last year, they should be fine. Will Frankie make it onto the pp or not?

I wonder what kind of quality the webcast will be. I may have to hook my new 50" plasma to the computer and watch the UW games in style. The Pack plays at noon, so there will be no conflict with the UW games. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

The new season is so close....

Hopefully, they can play .500 hockey during the first half of the season.

I'll take a stab at it. I'm a little less optimistic

1-0-1 Duluth
0-1-1 Showcase

8-8-4 in the first 20 games while they amass 38 goals. I expect lots of low scores and ties this season.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I think they will go into Denver and at least come out with a point in that series. They might not be so lucky against UMD.

It always seems the WCHA has 2 or 3 teams for sure bottom and top teams and then the middle is anyone’s guess and this year especially with the two new teams in the league.

After seeing St. Cloud lose to the Badgers in St. Paul, I think they will be one of the WCHA teams to go to the Frozen Four. No Dak is always knocking on the door.

Anyone going to predict the outcome of tonights game?

I wonder how many Badger's will get there first G tonight.

I am going to say Barnes and Ryan Little both put one in the back of the net tonight.

I think Ryan Little is going to be a nice surprise this year. He has to be pretty excited to get the jersey back on.

.

My prediction for tonight: BU wins by a score in the 2-0, 3-1 range. If the Badgers score 3 or more goals today I would be shocked, but delighted. I expect lots and lots and lots of trapping this season.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Totally wrong so far. Didn't think they would get 3 goals all game let alone one period. However, I didn't realize BU's defense is very thin and not that talented.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

UW played beyond my expectations tonight.

brief pointed thoughts

Gudmanson...adequate.

Derek Lee stood out. nice moves. **** near tied the game at the end.

Tyler Barnes...this kid looked VERY good. strong on the puck and will be rewarded over the long haul for his efforts.

Jordy Murray is Jordy Murray. 100% effort all the time. he's going to have a great season.

Zengerle. not sure. didn't see enough of him...admittedly I watched a ****ty stream and it's just one game. I had hoped for some immediate impact but that's probably coming from the recruiting hype more than anything. maybe I secretly hoped he'd score a hat trick in the first game because of that....who knows...

Mauer, Hartzog, Mersch, Simonelli, no opinion yet.

Gardiner was not as noticeable as I thought he'd be...I was disappointed in that...though I think he can take up the Brendan Smith role eventually

Schultz was great.

Dolan was great. much better puck movement and control.

ratty and podge were solid.

overall a good effort and I felt UW was better than BU for my .02

it's really exciting to see all the new kids and how they mostly seemed to just fit right in and go

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

it occurs to me now I didn't hear Jefferson Dahl's name once tonight. did he suit up?

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Didn't watch or listen, just read Baggot's recap...sounds like Smith continues to be a dumbass? I see a Jason Zent 2.0 in the making - a very talented player who will always be pretty good, but not great because he can't stay out of the box.

I listened to the game on the radio, and I'm not sure Baggot and the radio guys saw the same game. http://host.madison.com/sports/college/hockey/article_ab1a7b56-d35e-11df-a675-001cc4c03286.html
UW had three fabulous scoring sequences in the final 3 minutes — one by sophomore defenseman John Ramage was ruled a no-goal after video review; Lee was denied point-blank by BU goaltender Kieran Millan, then hit the right post with the rebound; and an apparent goal by senior left winger Podge Turnbull was disallowed apparently because he directed past Millan with his leg.

Radio said there was no video review available, and I'm pretty sure they said the no-goal for alleged kicking was Zengerle.

That said, yeah, I was pretty concerned that Smith managed to get kicked out a minute into the freaking season.

Wow. Just wow.

Not sure how you can purposely redirect a 70 mph wrist shot when your skate is still on the ice. Even the BU announcers were convinced that was a goal. Smith plays high energy, but he has to control that energy before he paralyzes someone. All and all I was really suprised by the Badgers play. I thought they would be trapping, but they were playing run and gun hockey. However I'm not exactly sure that's going to work as the season progresses.
