Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I think that's in my Old Testament as well. ;) :D

(Pretty quiet on the Badger Hockey front lines.....)

At first I was going to twisted into a New Testament book (Timothy of course :D ), but the Law comes out of the Old Testament, so I had to get it in there somehow. I was hoping you wouldn't call me on it. I knew Mr. Smallie wouldn't. I'm curious what 2 Chronicle actually says where I did my "editing". I'll have to check tonight at home.

UW Hockey.....

I was really hoping to submit a mask design for Goody, but I just never had any time. :(

Schedule...I think a 22-16 record is achievable. First 16 games 8-8 (the DU, rodent, UMD, Showcase stretch is tough), next 8 go 6-2; and the last 14 go 8-6 (the last 8, UNO, rodents, SCS, CC) could be tough, but 3 of those 4 teams could be somewhat midpack, so UW could close strong.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Honestly, I'll be happy if Bucky manages a winning record this year. Im hoping they will be much better than that, but I also realize they will have a VERY young team and after such a great season in '09-'11, I think this season is going to be a tough one to watch.
In some ways I think that having last season be the first season that I was serious at being a Badger hockey fan (going to a lot of games and keeping up on whats going on with the team) because now Im totally spoiled and am going to be disappointed when they arent that good every year.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

The low points over the years make the highs feel even higher. :)
On the long haul UW is in good shape to contend for top 3 league spots in the 11-12 and 12-13 years. It isn't like we're CC and you wonder if you will ever get back to the top.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I'm going to stick my neck out and predict a season around .650, but I don't think any higher. The WCHA, top to bottom, is without question the BEST hockey association in the country and maybe North America.

Yes the Badgers have good talent coming in; but young, untested talent. If these guys stay together for 2-3 years, it could be very interesting.

Having not seen any of these frosh play previously I'm not sure what to expect...but I'd say a top 5-6 finish or .650 play either/or or both would dramatically beat my current expectations.

but that's the pessimist in me.

the little seen optimist in me might say that the experience in goal and defense can carry you past some of the short-comings or inexperience in offense until the forwards/kids catch up???

I think that is realistic, they have an easy non-conference schedule outside of the IceBreaker and Showcase (though going 2-2 there should be acheviable.

The defense is still one of the better in the WCHA and having two experienced goalies is a huge bonus.

A record just over .500 in conference should be a good enough for home ice, and if they pad those wins in non-con a NCAA bid is possible. I think early struggles, followed by a solid push at the end of the season when the team comes together. This team has a lot of talent, just not experience.

This team has a lot of talent, just not experience.

And I think the older freshmen will not play like freshman either.

The PK and PP will have to be above average right away to make up for a less than stellar 5 on 5 d for the first 1/3 of the season as they learn to play D as units.

AP story today about UW athletic capital budget. All football - no mention of hockey addition to Kohl Center.

By COLIN FLY AP Sports Writer

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin athletic officials are asking for a $76.8 million athletic performance center in the next two-year state budget, just five years after a $109.5-million expansion of Camp Randall Stadium.

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents will review the request Thursday.

The proposal includes a new multistory building used primarily for football with new locker rooms and weight training facilities for all athletes.

The Regents agreed to a similar $67.2 million plan in the last budget cycle two years ago, but it was spiked by state officials in the approval process.

The proposal includes money to update the sound system and scoreboards at Camp Randall, add new locker rooms for other athletic teams and replace the FieldTurf installed six seasons ago.

The McClain Center, where several teams now practice, would also be updated.

"A whole new facility would really bring this program to a top-notch level where you could say it's second to none," quarterback Scott Tolzien said. "We'd have the locker room right there, the stadium right here and all those facilities literally just footsteps away. I think that would be huge with recruiting and with trying to raise this program to the next level."

The Badgers, nicknamed for lead miners who burrowed into the hillsides in the 19th century like the animal of the same name, may be doing more digging underneath the old stadium.

The plans call for two tunnels to be built, connecting the new locker room in the proposed performance center and the stadium to the antiquated McClain Center, constructed in 1988. The locker room would include multimedia space, recovery rooms, steam and shower rooms and a coaches suite nearby.

According to the proposal, the athletics department would borrow $50 million against its program's revenue and expects $26.8 million in gifts and grants to pay for it. According to a fundraising document, officials are asking for $7 million for naming rights to the building.

"Any time you see places that have 80,000, 90,000 or 100,000 paying all sorts of money to come (to games) and have conference and local TV and radio contracts, those programs are making loads of money," Western Kentucky University sports economist Brian Goff said. "It makes some sense over some time frame to reinvest your capital and keep yourself competitive against the people you're trying to recruit against."

The proposal says bond payments would be made using ticket revenue and the anticipated increase in funds from the Big Ten's expansion, the conference championship game beginning in 2011 and usage fees paid by UW Hospital and Clinics, which would run the sports medicine clinic on the third floor of the building.

The locker room would be in the lowest level of the performance center with two floors for a new strength and conditioning center. The fourth level would be used by the nearby College of Engineering and a partial fifth floor could be shelled for expansion or as outdoor event space.

"The needs of the athletic programs expanded over the years and the McClain Center now supports all 23 sports and 750 athletes in some fashion," according to the proposal. "This facility has essentially become the 'hub' for all UW-Madison student athletes."

Wide receiver Nick Toon remembers going to Notre Dame on a visit a few years ago and being in awe, even though it didn't sway his opinion to come to Madison, near where he grew up.

"Notre Dame, they had just redone their facilities and they were awesome," Toon said. "Really, the newer the better."

If approved, construction on the new building would begin in December 2011 and be completed by October 2013. The work in Camp Randall would take four months after the end of the 2011 season and should be finished in time for spring practice in 2012. The McClain Center upgrades would be done over 2½ years starting in April 2012.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Hopefully they can make the Kohl Center addition happen. With having 3 different sports played at the Kohl, it makes scheduling difficult sometimes.
I still think the Badgers will be a pretty respectable team by the end of the '10-'11 season. The first month or 2 might be ugly, but I think Eaves will mold them into a decent team by the time February rolls around.
The Badgers might not have the best season, but I think you might see them ruin someone else's season in the WCHA playoffs.

It was already announced that he'd be taking on the role of an "advisor" for the Red Wings, but today the news is official:Cheli is now retired. It doesn't seem possible.

You're right..it doesn't seem possible that he's 48. Some people called him a ***** and arrogant; maybe so. Not knowing Cheli, I spoke with him at least a half a dozen times, and each and every time he was very pleasant and approachable.

Congrats and soon you'll be getting that AARP card!

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Hate how the football divisions panned out, but love how it made A LOT of Badger fans all hate Barry now.
I agree sweaty. I've tried to keep an open mind on the Emperor, but I'm starting to wonder. He's a 'husker alum and he was on the coaching staff of the Iowegians and he didn't have enough pull to get into the "Western" division? And what's with Biddy Martin? *** was she any good for? Sure, we're going to play NE the next 2 years, but no Iowa until 2013, unless it's the play-off game.

I'm not much of a BB fan, but if TBT uses the same divisions, it would be a joke.

I know it's not hockey talk, but between $80,000,000 in upgrades around The Camp, now this, and NO HOCKEY IMPROVEMENTS, I'm just sitting here shaking my head. *Insert shaking head emoticon here* I spend a couple weeks fishing Canada and come home to this?

I can hear the song my hockey friends and I sang now . . . "Our Ben, in the middle of our Street . . ."

Long time no posts.....welcome back. Are you back as a regular or just a special guest?

Football alignment. What a joke UW got shipped out east. Barry must be a big pansy in the board room discussusions. And now he had the guts to cry about the FB facilities.
