Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Interesting quote I found looking up Penn State stories:

http://communities.canada.com/winds...oming-soon-the-big-ten-hockey-conference.aspx

Eaves, at the Caboto Club Tuesday as guest speaker in the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business Breakfast Of Champions Series, also had this to say about Detroit Red Wings prospect Brendan Smith, a former Badgers defenceman: “He's a wild mustang,” Eaves said. “He put up 50 points last season as a defenceman, which is phenomenal for our league. But he still needs some mentorship. Brendan needs to grow up emotionally.”

Huh.

Women's bball no less. When I think revenue generation, women's bball does not come to mind.
No kidding. Me thinks that BTN had a lot to do with this, because I cant imagine any other reason why womens' bounceyball would take priority over the UW/Minny hockey rivalry.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

It has been a very busy summer and not much time to post.

Hope all my badger brothers are doin' well and anxious for the upcoming season. Its going to be an interesting go with a lot of new faces, and some incredible talent coming in.

I have talked to various persons who believe AJ Michaelson is going to be a Badger. If that does, in fact, turn out to be true, UW is going to have an EPIC group of forwards for 2012 with Nick Kerdiles, Corbin McGuire, Morgan Zulinick, and Zach Stepan committed. I have been told Michaelson has been solid, if not spectacular, in the Elite League.

There has also been a lot of chatter from Minnesota followers that UM has yet to "put on the press" on Michaelson, but I'll take a head to head matchup with them with the current strained standing of the gopher program at present. Note: This kind of chatter is always heard about Minnesota kids and UM's recruiting efforts, but we shall see.

I think this year's badgers will fly under the radar for a bit. They will have to get the 2nd and 3rd pairings on D settled down. UW's top three are **** good (Ramage, Gardiner, and Schultz), with the other three spots up for grabs with Simonelli, Springer, Little, and Johnson all vying for ice time. I like Simonelli, Johnson, and Springer getting the time with the talk of Little possibly moving to F.

The goaltending is going to have to be better. You've got Bennett and Gudmanson with respectable records, but very low sv % numbers. I would not expect this year's club to score at the pace of last season, and the D is not quite as strong, so the goaltending is going to have to be better.

Bottom line, get off to a decent start, get the top two lines settled, and UW will have to play a more defensive style than last season to get into the NCAA's. There are enough top quality players to get this team into the tourney.

did Zach Stepan commit?

I hadn't seen that yet

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Nothing I've seen yet about it, but I'd have to believe UW is the front runner.

I'd hope so. Someone months ago posted that Eaves was unhappy w/the Rangers (and I wouldn't blame him) for pressuring Derek, I just hope that doesn't or didn't cause any friction between he and Derek that might lead Zach in another direction

I haven't heard anything on Stepan...Heisenberg has him with no commitment at this time.

Ryan Little has been told he's going to compete for a forward spot, not that it's just a possibility. I talked to him after the news came out and he indicated he was excited to try to crack the lineup and do whatever he could to be able to suit up for games and contribute to the team.

Hopefully UW's defense and goaltending can be good enough to keep them in games, especially until the younger guys get their legs under them.

Wisconsin men's hockey officially opens practice for the 2010-11 season on Saturday, Oct. 2, and the team is welcoming fans to come watch.

Come see UW's 10 freshmen, and the returning Badgers from a team that reached the 2010 NCAA Championship Game, in their its first public appearance of the season. UW will play a free Red-White scrimmage beginning at 4 p.m., at the Kohl Center. The scrimmage precedes the Badger women's hockey team's contest against Rensselaer. The women's game against the Engineers begins at 7 p.m., and fans can stick around to catch free Badger women's hockey action.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Awesome news on the 10/2 scrimmage, a double dipper at that. I will be there for sure with some children. So do you sieve chant at the gal's games?

Watching the Red Wings scrimmage has got me so pumped for UW hockey.

The final year of the line for student section tickets*, they distributed tickets on a saturday morning. That Friday night, there was a women's game against some awful team, and they let the entire student section line into the game for free. There were quite a few "sieve"s being thrown around.

*I'm getting forgetful in my old age... That was 05-06, right? In any case: RIP, student section line. I'll mourn ya til I join ya.
