Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath
Fox Lake in NE Dodge County. The Fox Lake Perch are smaller than the Mendota ones. I keep then if they are 7 1/2" or larger; they range up to 10". Anchor your boat in 5-6 feet of water on the west side of Kuno Point (the very tip). Leaf or night crawler chunks are working the best, fished close to the bottom. Some days they like hellgramites a lot, other days not so much. We're also catching mongo blue gills with the perch. You have to sort through them; there any many small fish. But we usually end up with 30 or so keeper perch and gills with 4 or 5 of us in the boat in about 4 hours or so. We've been richly blessed this year so far. I'll be back out there Saturday am.
Mendota....one time my Sister and I were fishing off Marshall Park (about 12 yrs ago) and the fish locator would show clouds of perch coming and going under us in like 20 feet of water. We limited out that day; what a great day it was. I would love to try Mendota again, it's just hard to find the perch on that lake. I've been skunked more than once over the years my Sister lived in Middleton or Madison. Once time she and I did find a large school of whitebass - those were fun to catch and tastey too (put not as good as perch, gils, pike or eyes). On a sad note, I was fishing with my Sister one Saturday in the fall on Mendota for bass/pike and my wife called me to tell me her Sister who had overdosed the day before had passed away.
I haven't gotten into a good school of Perch in years. Where are those Perch bitin' Timmy?(When I was a kid, my grandpa would take me on Mendota and we would catch a mess of 12" to 14" Perch anytime.)
Nothing better than a plate full of breaded Perch or Walleyes, fried reds, and beer.
EDIT: I didn't mean to rush summer, but the Dog Days are here and wanted to start a discussion. (Fishing is good!)
