Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I haven't gotten into a good school of Perch in years. Where are those Perch bitin' Timmy? ;) (When I was a kid, my grandpa would take me on Mendota and we would catch a mess of 12" to 14" Perch anytime.)

Nothing better than a plate full of breaded Perch or Walleyes, fried reds, and beer.

EDIT: I didn't mean to rush summer, but the Dog Days are here and wanted to start a discussion. (Fishing is good!)

Fox Lake in NE Dodge County. The Fox Lake Perch are smaller than the Mendota ones. I keep then if they are 7 1/2" or larger; they range up to 10". Anchor your boat in 5-6 feet of water on the west side of Kuno Point (the very tip). Leaf or night crawler chunks are working the best, fished close to the bottom. Some days they like hellgramites a lot, other days not so much. We're also catching mongo blue gills with the perch. You have to sort through them; there any many small fish. But we usually end up with 30 or so keeper perch and gills with 4 or 5 of us in the boat in about 4 hours or so. We've been richly blessed this year so far. I'll be back out there Saturday am.

Mendota....one time my Sister and I were fishing off Marshall Park (about 12 yrs ago) and the fish locator would show clouds of perch coming and going under us in like 20 feet of water. We limited out that day; what a great day it was. I would love to try Mendota again, it's just hard to find the perch on that lake. I've been skunked more than once over the years my Sister lived in Middleton or Madison. Once time she and I did find a large school of whitebass - those were fun to catch and tastey too (put not as good as perch, gils, pike or eyes). On a sad note, I was fishing with my Sister one Saturday in the fall on Mendota for bass/pike and my wife called me to tell me her Sister who had overdosed the day before had passed away.

Sounds like it is time for a USCHO Badger fan summer fishing outing to fish AND talk Badger hockey. Fishing for perch sounds like a lot of fun, been too long since I've done that. Someone lets me be a guest in their boat, and I'll bring a lot of beer!

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Mamakwash Lake, a fly-in out of Red Lake Ontario. Some days it was less like fishing and more like catching.
Nice! That's a pretty good haul by car or bush plane. "Tuk" Bay is a 12 hour car ride, then about 30 minutes by Otter; beautiful flight. That entire "Patricia Region" of Ontario is simply amazing; I hope to get back there again soon. I have many good memories with my Dad, bro, & friends, but never had a chance to take MCRJr up there......yet.

There's no time to drink beer, the fishing is too fast. Those fish know the minute you put the rod down to eat your bait and rob you blind.

Watch for the special "FROZEN FOUR" on the NHL Network SUNDAY NIGHT AT 8 PM. (DISH 403 or 625). I noticed it was on Saturday night and was able to DVR it as I was going out night Walleye hunting. I have not watched it yet so I cannot give a review.

I haven't seen this program discussed anywhere so forgive me if I missed the discussion!!

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Well, how did it go? Perch fishing is still fast and furious. I even caught a football/Mendota shaped 11 1/2" one.

20", 21", 24" and a few "mini-eyes". All fish were returned and are happy again! The 3 caught between 10:30 & 11 trolling Northland Crawler Rigs way out at the Brearly St bars on the outside. The water is 80°-82°...that is Florida-esque, but swimmers love it.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

What are you, some liberal anti-protien fish hugging commie vegan, returning all these yummy things back into the water?
Not really, I'm just to the right of Attilla the Hun :D . I mostly just sport fish, I don't keep any game fish. (CPR and have replicas). I do keep Perch when I target them and 'gills are too hard for me to fillet!

Easy Bronzebacks (my favorite fish!)......Knowing Tim on the boards, he's screwing around

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Right bible thumper....you're only a man if you keep and eat every fish you catch.

I'm having a light hearted discussion with a fellow BADger fan who has been posting on this site for years with me and the rest of the BADger faithful. Lighten up and mind your own business. If you want a Biblical Throwdown, go into the Cafe and start the thread.

For the record, if you go into 2 Chronicles, chapter 4, starting at verse 10:
"And the Lord God said, 'Any person named Timothy can keep as many fish as he wants, without regard to the legal rules of the land, as I the Lord God of all I have created, call all the shots.'" :D

I think that's in my Old Testament as well. ;) :D

(Pretty quiet on the Badger Hockey front lines.....)
