Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

It's easy to hide behind the "anonymous" moniker.

STANLEY CUP QUESTION: I was watching a live stream of the rally/parade in Chicago. Before the Blackhawks were introduced, many Rockford members were introduced including Skille & Dowell. Were they just included as team members or will they be engraved on The Cup?

The estimated crowd was over 2 million people! Holy ****!!

I know...ugh, those losers should take responsibility for ignorant postings.

2 million???? yikes. looks like no-one went to work today down here

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Most likely both would be back, There will need to be a couple trades on the blueline for a spot for McDonagh to open up and as far as i know Stepan hasn't had and talks with NY yet this offseason...
Id be very surprised if both are back.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

The AHL's Calder Cup is still going on...Joudrey and Hershey in it again. On NHL Network right now.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

and you know, honestly, I think the Badgers will be fine even having to almost completely retool the team.
The Badgers have had turnover like this many times in the past (its a huge part of college sports) and have managed to bounce back and still put a pretty good product out on the ice, so Im not all that worried about it.
Granted, it will likely be pretty ugly at the start of the season but I have confidence that Eaves and the rest of the coaching staff will work with and improve what players they have and the Badgers will be a pretty respectable team by the 2nd half of the season. I definetly dont expect them to contend for the national championship and honestly dont expect them to make the Frozen Four next season, but Im not all gloom and doom like some of you seem to be.
Then again, maybe thats just be being a fan and looking at things through rose-colored glasses...

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Sorry, but I'd still give the edge to Denver. Cheverie, Colborne, Ruegsegger, Rakhshani, Wiercioch. Nobody else in the country had five guys that talented, and they lose all five of them at once, along with four other seniors who were all contributing players, all playing at least 28 games.

Don't forget, the Badgers also lost both assistant coaches as well.

They were announced because they were on the expanded playoff roster. They could have been used if needed, but weren't. The defenseman Boynton was in the same boat, but they activated him for Hendry and he will get his name on the Cup.

It's good for those two to get to be there for all of this and with the upcoming salary purge that will be needed, it's quite possible that one or both of them will be on the roster next season.

Skille's salary is the biggest reason he didn't see more time this season. I don't expect him to be back.

Skille won't get much of a raise at all (made $850k last year), is still getting better IMO, and is a better option at around $1MM than they could bring in from the outside. I think he'll step into the role a guy like Brouwer had. Hopefully he continues to develop and after a few years under his new contract (not sure what the minimums are for a 2nd deal) the Hawks will have to decide whether to keep him or pay him bigger bucks like they are now facing with Brouwer.

He actually made 1,275,000, and when you're in such a predicament such as the Hawks are (already 4 mil over the cap with only 14 players under contract), Skille is increasingly expendable. Especially when Niemi hasn't even been re-signed and you're already over the cap.

Skille is not going to get less than he got this year from a team, and the Hawks can't afford a guy making over 1.3 to play fourth line RW.

I don't see Skille back unless he takes a significant pay cut.

Yes, counting his bonus.

Thanks for the salary cap and math lesson.

I repeat: who are they going to get that will make less than Skille and do as good of a job as he can (who also still has more upside than he's shown). I'm guessing Burish will be back for close to the minimum, but you can't have 3-4-5 guys of Bur's caliber on the team. Even Dowell would be a better overall player than Burish, but still doesn't have near the offensive ability or upside of Skille (let alone Brouwer, Versteeg, Buff, Ladd...).

No offense, but you are insane. A tie MAYBE, but no way they get the "edge."

Blake Geoffrion - HOBEY BAKER, 1st Team All American, 1st Team WCHA
Brenda Smith - Hobey Finalist, 1st Team All American, 1st Team WCHA, led all defensemen in scoring in the country
Derek Stepan - no "honors" to speak of other than he led the Badgers in scoring and lead the USA to a gold at the WJC as Captain
Ryan McDonagh - 2nd Team WCHA and arguably the best all around blue liner in the country (I'm assuming he's gone at this point)
Cody Goloubef - an very underrated blue liner who doesn't make mistakes and will have a long NHL career.

Two 1st round picks, three 2nd round picks.

I realize how talented that group from Denver is, but UW still has the #1 talent depletion to graduation/early signings.

That doesn't mention six seniors who played every night and were critical to the run to the finals. Michael Davies already signed a pro contract, and I put him up against Ruegsegger in talent. That makes six. Street, Bohmbach, Bendickson, all key pieces the team will sorely miss.

Not even close when you add those six players in.

So, your top 5 you're losing you're calling Geoffrion, Smith, Stepan, McDonough, Goloubef? Yeah, ok...

Cheverie, Colborne, Ruegsegger, Rakhshani, Wiercioch > your 5.

Cheverie, best goalie in the nation, hardest position to replace. HUGE edge DU.
Wiercioch, 2nd best offensive defenseman in the WCHA, behind Smith, so I'll give you guys the edge there.
Colborne, Ruegsegger, Rakhshani... nobody else had 3 forwards that talented on a team, particularly when you consider Colborne was only a sophomore a really starting to come into his own. I realize you guys lose two more blueliners in the comparsion, but with as deep as your blueline has been, I'd still say DU got hit worse. And you're throwing in two guys who haven't officially left yet.

I know we're nitpicking (what else is there to do in June) but I REALLY believe if you threw this out to 100 people who follow the WCHA and know what they're talking about, and nobody who calls themself a DU or UW fan, you'd lose this one.

Don't forget, the Badgers also lost both assistant coaches as well.

Sorry, I only mean on-ice talent. :D

Funny that even with all that talent, DU lost in the first round. Individual talent does not equate to being a good team.

The SUM of our parts was greater than the sum of theirs. Individually, I'd agree with you that they may be slightly better.

I don't see Skille back unless he takes a significant pay cut.

The only number that matters with Skille to the Hawks is his base salary of 850K. He never achieved any of his bonus numbers anyways (primarily because he did not get enough ice time). As a RFA that had a base under 1 million, the Hawks only need to offer 5% above the base salary (or 893K) to retain his rights. That's not to say Jack may not be open to another organization dropping an offer sheet for a much higher pricetag, but for the Hawks to retain his rights...the tab will be 893K qualifying offer and he either takes it or finds someone else willing to pay more in which the Hawks can match or take draft compensation to let him go.

In the end, Skille will not make the Hawks as a 4th liner. He will make it as a cheap homegrown replacement for whomever in the top 3 lines ends up as a cap casualty. Unfortunetly for Jack, there will be several other guys in the battle for the spots that do end up open after the Summer dust settles (I would guess whichever of the guys under contract gets moved could also return an option or two in the fray). Guys like Beach, Makarov, Kruger, Bickell, and Aliu will all get looks and Jack is not a given by any stretch. Most likely suspects for cap casualties are Madden (UFA), Ladd (RFA), & then 1 or 2 of Versteeg/Sharp/Buff (because of salary to role on team ratio and I realize all 3 are very good players, but I just don't see any of Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith, Seabs, Bolland going anywhere so those 3 are the main suspects). 2 wild cards for the Hawks with salary cap are will they bite the bullet and bury Huet in the AHL and save 5.65 off the cap (at first blush the kid is still a Wirtz....but I suspect once the bean counters add up the playoff revenue...the kid might be smart enough to make that move) and can they stomach adding in the sweetner it will take to move Campbell's contract ( I like Campbell as a player....but at 7 million he is a couple million over paid and with Keith, Seabs, & hopefully Hjammer extended not as essential). One rumor is that teams with some cap space may take on Campbell with Skille plus to free cap space for the Hawks (Campbell has a limited no movement clause so that may be difficult to swing though).

I agree, and that's not a bad thing for him to move on; there are many teams in the league that can use him.....and maybe on the 2nd line or higher! Sure, it would suck to have a player with local ties move from a team a lot of us follow, but that just spreads the Badgers out more across North America!

I ran into Kluby over the weekend. He looks great and is really looking forward to camp. Let's all pull for him to make the Habs roster!
