Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Wow what disapointing news. Especially the fact that Stepan might end up in the WHL next season. How does this help his game over staying? I can't imagine McDonaugh staying around especially with this loss, leaving the team without one caption if that happens. How far would both losses drop us for next season 7th? 8th place? Any chance any forward out their set for 2011 from another school like a Wiercoch??

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Most likely both would be back, There will need to be a couple trades on the blueline for a spot for McDonagh to open up and as far as i know Stepan hasn't had and talks with NY yet this offseason...

Good call.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

The NYP is a ****ed joke.

Used in a defensive and checking role through much of his college career, Stepan was an offensive force in the tournament for the United States, recording 14 points (4-10) in seven games. He had 54 points (12-42) as a sophomore for the Badgers, who lost the NCAA final to Boston College.
Would they care to elaborate on how a forward in a defensive/checking line role manages to accumulate 54 points in a college season?

Okay, this part isn't an error or bad writing by the NYP, but it just royally ****es me off:

If he does not make the club, he's more likely to be assigned to the junior WHL Calgary Hitmen rather than the team's AHL Hartford affiliate.
Are they saying that they would possibly/likely sign him out of college JUST TO PUT HIM IN MOTHER ****ING MAJOR JUNIOR?!?!?!?!?

**** you, Glen Sather. **** you with a sideways hockey stick.

Edit: If Sather manages to sign both Stepan and McD this summer, I'm officially adding the Rangers to my NHL **** list. They join the Hawks, Canucks, and Sharks as teams that I will absolutely refuse to support in any way, shape or form.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Wow, sorry to hear about Stepan signing. I'm not sure he's NHL ready, but the lure of the pros can be tough to tune out.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

let's not panic just yet. nothing's happened yet.

but seriously if McD and Stepan leave....this team is in shambles and will struggle mightly to reach 6-7th position

I agree.

If this is true, UW will have lost one and possibly two major leadership position players. Not a good day for Badger Hockey. I still do not get it. I get the money part, but to leave college to potentially play in the WHL?

Edit:

For what it is worth...

Stephan's father thinks his son will either play for Hartford or New York.

Scott Hartnell finally got an elbowing call after throwing no fewer than four of them during the playoffs.

Last night was the second time someone's helmet came off from one of his elbows.

This Philly team is comparable to the 2007 Ducks.

ITs in the 2nd period of Game 6, is this the refing that yall wanted this series because this has been horrible all around.... what a disaster this game has been so far

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

There certainly isn't anyone out there to replace Stepan in the recruiting pool, but I don't really think of the 2011 forwards are really more than filler at this point at the bottom of the line chart.

Brendan Woods, Tyler Lapic, Matt Paape, Cody Strang and Gavin Hartzog??? Woods has potential but w/ an injury last season he needs another year of juniors.

The cupboard is bare at forward now, really ****ing Matt Thurber wouldn't have get dismissed from the team and Chris Hickey wouldn't have had to transfer, they'd look really nice in the 2010 lineup.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

**** you Sather, I didn't like you in Edmonton either. Another reason to hate NYC. ;) (I'm not panicking, I just need to vent about NYC and the 'Hawks are sitting back on their heels and let PHIL score. Sound familiar?)

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Watching the second hour of post game on Comcast and they just showed Burish on the ice with Dowell and Skille after the game. Cool to see those three together.

Hawks win! Hawks win!

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Wow, you guys are really hitting the panic button. I mean, if you guys lose Stepan, and maybe McDonough, I'm not gonna say its not gonna hurt, but struggling to take 7th? Remember, as bad as you guys got hit this offseason, you still didn't have your cupboards raided as bad as Denver, and you're still better than the Gophers. :D And a team like Bemidji, as crazy as it is to say, may end up starting the season with more talent than you guys (what the hell?) but I still like you guys to finish ahead of them because of experience and being used to the grind of the WCHA.

Oh, and congrats to Burish too. Even though Nodl was playing for the Flyers earlier in the playoffs, I can't ever bring myself to cheer for Philly... unless they like played San Jose.

We didn't have our cupboards raided as bad as Denver? Have ya seen who we've lost this offseason? Denvers losses don't hold a candle to ours.

Blake Geoffrion-50 Points, All American, Hobey Baker
Derek Stepan-54 Points
Michael Davies-52 Points
Brendan Smith-52 Points, All American
Ben Street-30 Points
Andy Bohmbach-24 Points
Aaron Bendickson-22 Points
John Mitchell-19 Points
Cody Goloubef-14 Points, rock solid defender

That's not even counting Ben Grotting who played in almost 150 games for the Badgers as well as Matt Thurber who was kicked off the team and would have been a top 3 line player this upcoming season.

And at this point I would say it's expected we'll lose Ryan McDonagh as well.

I completely understand your sentiment on the 2011 forward class, and in part agree with you. But there is also a part of me that says...that class is as unknown and befuddling to me as the class of Bendickson, Bombach, Grotting, Davies, Geoffrion. Sure Blake was expected to be good or great, and maybe Davies, but the other 3???

here's to hoping.

...
Eaves' track record speaks for itself at this point, and he's never hired a bad assistant so I feel like Schu and Butters will help these kids grow just like Ward, Hynes, Oseicki, Patrick et al before them.

I may be slightly exaggerating figuring on 6-7th place next season, but even if that's where they end up, the future is bright. 2012 class could be the class that puts the icing on the NCAA title cake in their first 2 years in Madison
