Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

So, your top 5 you're losing you're calling Geoffrion, Smith, Stepan, McDonough, Goloubef? Yeah, ok...

Cheverie, Colborne, Ruegsegger, Rakhshani, Wiercioch > your 5.

Cheverie, best goalie in the nation, hardest position to replace. HUGE edge DU.
Wiercioch, 2nd best offensive defenseman in the WCHA, behind Smith, so I'll give you guys the edge there.
Colborne, Ruegsegger, Rakhshani... nobody else had 3 forwards that talented on a team, particularly when you consider Colborne was only a sophomore a really starting to come into his own. I realize you guys lose two more blueliners in the comparsion, but with as deep as your blueline has been, I'd still say DU got hit worse. And you're throwing in two guys who haven't officially left yet.

I know we're nitpicking (what else is there to do in June) but I REALLY believe if you threw this out to 100 people who follow the WCHA and know what they're talking about, and nobody who calls themself a DU or UW fan, you'd lose this one.
Considering the fact that Denver pretty much fell apart at the last part of the season and made an early exit in the playoffs, it definetly lowers the stock of those players.
The Badgers outplayed DU, had a player that won the Hobey and made it to 1 game of winning the national championship.

yeah i'm not sure what kind of team denver will have next year but they have great coaching and always seem to win there share of games, but next year seems to be a North Dakota year from the look of it...

In some badger news, the Ranger signed another d-man for next season (below link) and with the trade deadline last year bringing in Anders Eriksson and they already are trying to find a spot on the blueline for bobby Sanguinetti, next year is looking promising for McDonagh staying, if it looks like he will be spending all next season in the AHL, i think he would rather stay here at UW.

As far as the Stepan signing thing, he had kept the whole thing under lock and key because i know not many of the guys knew he was even thinking about leaving either. its unfortunate, i hope it doesn't turn into another Turris situation, it looks like if he doesn't make the Roster in camp, he is heading up to the WHL, i'm not sure what he would gain by playing against a lot of smaller 16-17 and 18 year olds versus bigger and more mature players like there are in the NCAA. It just sucks to lose a player like that, specially with all the forwards graduating, who is going to score goals next year? Can't we just go back to the trap for a season? totally kidding btw

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Funny that even with all that talent, DU lost in the first round. Individual talent does not equate to being a good team.

The SUM of our parts was greater than the sum of theirs. Individually, I'd agree with you that they may be slightly better.

Didn't say anything about who was a better team, just said that I personally felt DU got hit harder, and mostly because losing any starting goaltender is hardest of all things to replace, let alone one of the top in the nation.

I will admit that I was surprised but I talked to 6 people today who follow the WCHA closely, all St. Cloud or Gopher fans, and the vote was split down the middle, half saying DU, half saying you guys. And all three that said UW were St. Cloud fans, so I'm wondering if the fact that we played you guys 6 times, therefore obviously were more familiar last year with Geoffrion, Davies, Smith, etc. than the DU players, whom we only played twice and since it was out in Denver, none of them actually saw a game live against them.

After my unofficial poll, even with a small sample size, and while I still feel because of the replacing the goalie issue I think DU got hit worse, I'm ok with calling it a "pick 'em" situation.

They sure do, but I have to agree w/ 14 that it will be North Dakota's to lose. They didn't really lose anyone (other than VandeVelde) and get Genoway back, plus some nice recruits.

Their four lines will be tough for any team to compete w/. I still think Eidness is over rated though.

yeah but UND isn't known for there great goaltenders anyway, they get good enough goaltending but I can't remember the last all american goaltender they had, even 1 team all conference goaltender. They over come there average play in net and next year will be no exception. I think they run away with the reg. season title next year, similar to DU last year, and are a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament....

UW on the other hand i really don't want to talk about... next year may be like Eaves 1st season as coach... unless this class coming in just takes off or eaves has some trick up his sleeve, Right now i'm begging to be in the running for home ice next season...

uhm....NO CHANCE, no chance 2010-11 is like Eaves' 1st season.

That team had 1 smart-*** player with talent, and a solid/hard-working frosh class that would become heroes.

This team has MUCH more talent than that right now. Schultz, Gardiner, Ramage on D. McD as well if he stays. Right there you're light-years ahead of year 1.

Also, Derek Lee, Craig Smith, Jordy Murray, very experienced goaltenders, and add Mark Zengerle, Mersch, et al...

The last sentence of the article indicates that Sather also wants to get McDonagh signed. The author of the article, Larry Brooks, is the Rangers beat reporter.

Sather is continuing to make an effort to sign Stepan's Wisconsin teammate, senior defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who also will be at the Rangers' prospect camp

Well, I didn't need a ton of motivation to really dislike the Rangers before...

No ****, never liked the ****ers, and never liked the *** hole Sather. That makes it "doubly" easy to dislike them more. Too bad for Stepan & McD since we like to follow ex-Badgers, but I don't care in this case.

I heard through the grapevine that Eaves is ****ed; ya think?
