WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Cowbells and blow horns are what the small town (read "hick") hockey programs that we would play against typically had. That and fat moms with she-mullets and their kid's photo buttons all over their team jacket.

There was always one thing for certain whenever we played a small town team in a tournament: pennies in a milk jug! Cowbells and photo buttons were fairly common everywhere when I was growing up. Even North Shore Chicago teams had them.

You too sweatpants? Personally I'm all for bringing back the Canadian Club to the Bob Johnson rink.

While we're at it we should get a few more kids out of Canada, too.

Got an idea because, you know, you guys lose UND and a reason to live next year.

Go over to Mendota and get some old guy with advanced dementia to come to the games and lead cheers with number cards he holds up. Maybe he could get the remedial section of the crowd to count with him. I know Madison has a reputation for having a lot of smart people, but I think it could work anyway. No, really.

You know the more I think about this Chelios deal, I'm changing my mind. My neighbor is a alumni of the slightly lesser of the two lower Michigan evils, so I hear about them a lot. Jake Chelios is primarily a defenseman but he's offensively skilled enough to play forward for Sparty on occasion. If he had come to UW he'd have played with a couple of pretty good players. What if by now he develops more and he's the missing offensive dman piece to the power play?

Chelios! First he leave early then screws us again twenty years later!!!:mad::mad:

would be cool to have those kids for nostalgia but what about points and wins? how about Reilly Smith, Ryan Walters, Nate Condon and what happened to Monpetit? I honestly forgot why Brock was not brought in to UW

His dad made some bogus excuse that UW didn't offer a 100% full ride. UW only offered 90%, which is standard for a full ride everywhere. So there were likely other factors in play that probably turned them off. One might be his linemates Stepan and Jordy Murray coming in right from Shattuck and Monpetit being asked to playa year or two in juniors.

Bingo...and I'm 100% getting in trouble for even commenting on this but whatever.

the 90% scholarship thing was a complete fabrication from Montpetit's father. He received the exact same full ride as Kyle Turris or Justin Schultz or anyone else. His parents also own float rite park in Somerset (X Fest, Oz Fest, etc)...so it's not like that was really a factor anyways.

The two issues at hand were 1) Jordy Murray and Derek Stepan coming in before him as sweatpants points out. They were linemates at Shattuck and Eaves brought those two in first and chose to send Montpetit back to the USHL. Montpetit was ****ed about this. And 2) At the time Wisconsin was backed up on forwards. Montpetit was to join the Badgers as a freshman for the 2009-10 season, the same year Wisconsin went to the national title game. Obviously the Badgers were deep on forwards at that point. Montpetit was concerned that he wouldn't get enough playing time, and decided to go another way.

As for Solo's comments on Condon and Reilly Smith, I think everyone here has heard the story on them 1,000 times. Condon was a 2009-10 recruit, and Wisconsin only had two forward scholarships. They chose to go with Derek Lee and Craig Smith. Condon committed to Minnesota for 2009 but they pushed him to 2010. Late in the process Wisconsin talked to him about possibly a 2010 spot but it was too late in the game.

As for Reilly Smith, same thing basically. The Badgers were full with Craig Smith and Derek Lee, and offered Smith for 2010. Miami had an open spot for 2009 and he decided to take it. Can't fault a kid for that.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

I should also add that Brock Montpetit decommitted from Wisconsin AFTER Condon committed to Minnesota, and AFTER Reilly Smith committed to Miami. So Wisconsin actually had Derek Lee, Craig Smith, and Montpetit lined up for the year that Condon and Smith were being recruited by most schools.

In looking at the 3 players, Eaves made the right call, Stepan and Murray were so good they left early, and Montpetit has never been more than a 20 pt a yr guy for UNO after 3 years in the USHL.

The Lee/Smith/Condon thing stinks only because if UW had better balance in the forward classes they could have had all 3.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Alabama-Huntsville has released its schedule for next season. They will come to Madison Dec. 27-28 for a two game series vs Wisconsin.

Wasn't he sent a LOI but did not send it back? IIRC

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

For those debating on whether to go to either of the games this weekend, just use the student code (which is right on the UW website) and anyone can get the student pricing. I got two tickets (printed out and in hand) on the blue line about 15 rows up for under $25 total and that includes all the Ticketmaster fees. I may have to stand all game, but the price is too good to pass up.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Rubber chickens are surprisingly hard to find near campus. Okay, maybe it's not so surprising. But I couldn't find one today. Should have ordered online earlier in the week.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Know anybody coming over from Milwaukee? I understand American Science and Surplus has a fine selection.

Yes, I'm a rubber chicken connoisseur. So what?

I only know people coming over from Madison. :D Reading all the articles this past week of the old Coliseum atmosphere (yes, I know this weekend won't be the same), and I liked the rubber chicken thing. Actually, things like that seem like they'd fit in well at volleyball games at the Field House. It is an echoey old barn, and I know I'll be able to get a rubber chicken before next fall.
