WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Shouldn't I buy it dinner first? Or at least share some thinner with it?

Something, I suppose. If you continue to be afraid to take it out you're never going to get very far with it.

In other news. Scuttlebutt on the boards is that former Badger and current NMU leader in points, Matt Thurber, was injured today in practice. (possibly broken leg) Bad break (heh.) for Matt and I hate to see a guy hurt, but perhaps ironically, bodes well for the Badgers with Bucky being in dire need of NMU losing to Michigan this weekend and falling off the TUC cliff.

SCSU got swept by them, so we would love to see NMU fall off the cliff as well. Who knows, maybe the WCHA could get 6 teams in the tourney.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Off Topic Question:

I have been searching online, and even asking around our association, and have been unable to get a definitive answer.

Are the youth hockey age groups purely based on the year you are born, not the date? IE, my daughter is a Feb, 2005 birthday. She will still be eligible for Mite (8U) next year (2013-2014), right?
Thanks!

In Wisconsin, it's based solely on birth year. All of the kids born in 05 are in the same group.

05's & 06's should be Mites (Red, White & Blue) for the upcoming season.

Article about the decline in UW attendance talks about hockey a bit:

Haase, who described herself being as hardcore a Badgers hockey fan as you can be from the Milwaukee area, said the on-ice product hasn’t been great.

Nor has the atmosphere with smaller crowds, she said.

“You can feel the difference,” Haase said. “Nobody stands up anymore. We’re literally the only people that stand up and cheer, do the dances at period break.”

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Put it this way, Craig Anderson had a freak neck injury in 98' that almost left him paralyzed. He had surgery to realign his vertebrae that put him in a halo for a couple months. The NCAA denied his request for a medical hardship even though he only played in 7-8 games. Again, NCAA might be more lenient nowadays, but I doubt it. They seem to treat football and hockey/basketball quite differently.

Sidenote: It's hard to imagine how good that 99'-00' team would be with Anderson playing and Tanabe not going pro.

So you're saying there's no truth to the rumor that Chelly was getting his two years of eligibility reinstated for a playoff run?

If by some ugly turn of events the girls miss the NCAA's, MJ technically has a year left too. I was counting on that to take care of the ol' pp issues...

Shoot. :(

He'd play for MI St with his kid, he's lost a little love from me.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

FWIW Chelli said he was upset when his kid decided to go to Michigan State. Wanted him to be a Badger.

I take back my angst. I thought I had read somewhere, probably on this site, that Chelli wanted him to go to Mechigan or M St since he had all these connections in the Detroit area. Is the kid any good?

I'm glad they're talking about it. What worries me most is that when the atmosphere declines, the overall live product declines. Consequently, people are more likely to stay home. That's a bad cycle, and makes the entire experience worse. It's not just dollars, and I'm glad they're at least saying they care.

Edit/Addition: They need more relaxed sign policies. I'd love for them to make a system to allow signs hanging from the upper deck (where there are no scoreboards). One or two cowbells would be great. Not too many, just one or two (if two, they must be on opposite ends). When used right, it can be a great addition to a hockey game. And giant heads at basketball games.

Cowbells?

Um... NO!

Believe me, it can work. At Washington Capitals games, there is one (and only one) guy with a cowbell at one end. He doesn't abuse it, but he rings it when it just makes sense. For example, he'll ring it on a breakout during a PK (it flows nicely with the players moving down the ice on the attack) or any general uproar from the crowd.

Shush. More cowbell.

Dean (redshirting this year due to injury and will be a 5th yr Sr forward next year) and Jake ( Jr. D/F) Chelios are probably middle of the road college players. I believe Jake made some noise his first year, but nothing too spectacular since. Of course, MI ST hasn't been all that good in general. They both probably could have done ok here, but I don't think we're missing much. As far as the old man, nice to see him come by and drop the puck. Not really like he was here very long to build up a big life long connection to UW. Would have loved to have him longer but he was one of the few guys that there wasn't much doubt about. Hard to make an argument for a guy like that sticking around longer. I wished Ryan Suter would have stayed one more year, but same thing there. He was more than ready and wasn't going to finish out a degree here anyway. Glad we had 'em both when they were here.

Like Wisko explains there are two...I believe Jake, the younger one, is the one that had an opportunity to go to Wisconsin but decided to go to Mich St. to play with his brother. Would be nice to have the name, but other than that it's not a big deal.

My oldest had a bad experience with cowbells. He was the goalie on a bad squirt b team (this team probably set the record of allowed breakaways at any level, any year, in the history of mankind), and they were in a tourney at Marinette. There was this team whose uni's were the same as the Swedish Olympic Team, the yellow and blue, and their fans rang cowbells. Let's just say to this day he hates cowbells and the Swedish Olympic hockey team.

Well, I don't have an experience like that, but the first cowbell anywhere near my section will become a sphincter-bell real quick.

-flexes internet muscles-

Cowbells and blow horns are what the small town (read "hick") hockey programs that we would play against typically had. That and fat moms with she-mullets and their kid's photo buttons all over their team jacket.

Maybe we could get these at the KC...

A continuous noisemaker is very, very bad. I only mentioned the limited cowbell use because it goes against going to the game and being totally passive. Don't people get all nostalgic over "Martha's cowbell?" Just one.

No you are indeed right. He wanted Dean(the oldest one) to go to Michigan, but they never offered.

Essentially you're describing Canadians.

More cowbell.
