Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Burish, Joudrey, Earle and Pavelski came to my son's cross-ice practice that year and he was about to need new skates, so he got each of them to sign a side of the skates and we retired them. They are hanging in his room.

Of course as Robbie was demonstrating cross-overs, a kid ran into him and Robbie had to be helped from the ice only to make a miraculous recovery and rejoin the practice when he realized that no one was paying attention to him. ;)

Cool for your son. As for Robbie, NOW you come clean! I suppose it was a Sioux recruit who threw the elbow?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

The Tulsa and the SCSU jersey look like they were backed over by car tires. Seems awful fishy.
Yes, those are atypical examples, but honestly after you've seen tens of thousands of jerseys in person you will realize it's quite common. Below are some photos from the company I mentioned previously. Every jersey in these photos is a game worn NHL jersey. They have another area even bigger in size for minor league stuff (AHL, ECHL, etc). This also gives you an idea of how much less the supply is for college stuff when compared to pro jerseys. Pro teams go through jerseys like water under a bridge.

Hmmm..I'd love to get ahold of a Pavelski jersey :)
Ask and ye shall receive. This jersey of the Polish Prince was offered to me last October (I passed on it), however if you thought the Burish was spendy, this one sold for almost $2,500. Even a good engineering job, doesn't give me that kind of extra income...

<img width=400 src="http://www.johnsonsjerseys.net/temp/5.jpg"> <img width=400 src="http://www.johnsonsjerseys.net/temp/6.jpg">
Check out the list of names in the photo - all game used college jerseys: Rolston, Parise, Gionta, etc! That's a $15k+ photo...

To be honest, most fans and players are equally shocked about what the price can be for some of this stuff on the open market. I've had more than a few players ask about their pro jerseys only to pass when they find out the cost. I'm sure to them it's just some shirt they wore at work (would you play someone hundreds of dollars for the polo shirt or slacks you wear to the office?), but the guys who had shorter careers are more than happy to strike a purchase or trade deal because there are only a few of there jerseys out there available. All in all it is a really fun hobby because you meet a lot of nice folks, who are huge fans of hockey (at all levels) and you get to handle some unique historical items which are generally all one of a kind.

Wow! I never dreamed that this would be going on. Thanks for the look-in, even if it's not my thing, it's interesting.

Not sure if he's a recruit yet, but his last name was Archibald.

Wisconsin picked to finish 7th...

really anything below 5th is unacceptable but what really confounds me is the rats are picked higher so...their recruiting is that much better suddenly? if so, UW's got problems

Remember that in the 12 team league, 6th is home ice and 7th is just out of home ice.

Given that UW will be using a freshman goalie and has serious questions about where the scoring is going to come from, 7th isn't that unreasonable from my perspective. UW is also 17th in the USCHO preseason poll.

Hockey pre-season polls are nearly worthless predictors of how a team will do anyway, not something to particularly worry about as a fan. If the team wins, it will all work itself out in the end.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

We will be ok scoring goals. Zengerlee, Barnes and Mersch will all bury the puck. Barnes reminded me a lot of Craig Smith his fr year. Z needs to be a center to take full advantage of his abilities. I think Lee can also be a huge contributor.

I'm not worried at all about the goaltending situation, Rumpel is the man. Baggott had some D pairings Butters set up for offseason workouts listed:

Schultz-McCabe
Rammer-Daly
Simonelli-Faust
Springer-Drake

Is Daly THAT good? I totally trust Rumpel, but I think UW won't want a freshman D on the ice for 2 of every 3 shifts. As good as they may be, experience is important. I would think Springer would be a top 6 guy. Interesting to discuss anyway.

all good points but we need UW to be back to the late 70's-to-mid 80's *** kicking level. an annual threat to win the League and potentially make and win the frozen four.

I like those combo's actually. it could serve McCabe and Daly well to play alongside those two vets... especially by mid-season if they can hang on. there's almost nothing to lose by trying em out in the first 4 games...or at least that's my .02

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

So Wisconsin is the only WCHA team on the road the last 2 weekends of the year. And a good chance they won't host a 1st round playoff series. Nice.

A giant FU to Alvaraz from the WCHA offices.

With the whole season ahead of them, the team controls if they play on the home or road on the first round, not the WCHA offices.

It could be that Springer and Drake just don't have what it takes to play every night. Springer hasn't really improved since he landed in Madison. He actually played better the first half of his freshman year than I've seen him play since. Certainly nice to have a vet though who can be counted on for solid minutes due to injury or poor play. Faust and Simonelli should be fun to watch this season, I thought Frankie really turned it on later in the season.

I don't know about Daly, but McCabe will not look like your average typical freshman. Remember, he played 15 or whatever games against college teams with the NTDP last season. McCabe should hit the ground running and make an immediate impact. Someone who's opinion I trust very much anointed him the next QB of the PP after Schultz is gone.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I know the Badgers have a tradition of excellent goaltending, but any of you guys have an idea (including hunch) how the post-Howie era stacks up against his tenure.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I think we've been getting much better goaltending than we would have thought when Howie retired. Maybe not quite on the same standard as Howie (especially his ending string of Bruckler-Elliott-Connelly), but still solid.

Too early to call but I will say this...Scott Gudmandson came A LONG ways in his four years at Wisconsin.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I suppose it's a little hard to completely separate Howie's success from the good goaltending that came after him, since the top notch goalies are probably still drawn to the program because of the tradition he had a part in building.

I'm not aware of how UW was able to get and keep Howie for so long, but I've often wondered why other programs didn't make a big effort to have a Howie, given the importance of good goaltending.

I know these comments are off topic, but all the concerns expressed about the lack of experience in net brought Howie to mind.

I don't think you'll find a Badger fan on these boards who wouldn't give the shirt off their back to have Howie back.

I'm sure. Whenever the discussion turns to rating the best coaches (or programs) in college hockey, I often think about him quietly going about his business of making the most important position on the ice great year after year and the effect that can have on a head coach's job and the team's success.
