Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Yesterday's game was so extremely disappointing on so many fronts. It was ugly and difficult to watch. I can't come up with a single excuse for the lack of energy and overall poor play in a rivalry game.

For a team that has won 22 games this year, they are surprisingly inconsistent. That doesn't bode well for going deep into the NCAA's.

I wouldn't read too much into that game. There was very little to gain and a lot to lose in that game. I"m just happy we came out of that series with everyone healthy, I had my doubts midway through yesterdays game that that would be the case. Had they beat Minnesota 6-1, I would most likely be saying the same thing. After Fridays game thery were playing to stay healthy and maybe steal a game. Lets be honest we don't need momentum to take care of UAA on a big sheet of ice, they are way to slow to keep the games close enough to have a chance at the end.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Since I was 9 years old in 1992, would you care to brief me on what made our loss to Lake Superior State so interesting?

I was at the game. UW had I believe a 2-0 lead early in the game, then the ECAC refs decided to start calling penalties that would never be called in playoff games. Silly ticky-tack b.s. calls. LSSU capitalized because the UW players were completely gassed killing off 5-on-3's. Up 4-3 late with the goalie pulled, LSSU had a clean shot and took it. UW players threw their gloves and sticks trying to stop the puck, puck still went in, more penalties called. The players collectively blew a gasket at the end and accosted the ref. The crew had to have security protection from the arena since many fans were also ****ed off.

From wikipedia:
Wisconsin reached the 1992 NCAA final against Lake Superior State, losing 5-3. The game, which featured some questionable calls by the referee that continually put the Badgers at a 2-man disadvantage, irked several players so much that they lashed out beyond Sauer's control, verbally abusing the referees and earning Sauer a 1-game NCAA suspension. That game was later vacated by the NCAA for minor rules violations unrelated to the incidents in the championship game.

Also I think the amount of HORRIBLE calls all weekend long was unacceptable at any level of hockey and then i looked up who were the refs, it was just par for the course with that crew. BRUTAL

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

I was 7, so I can't add much more.

I'll understate it for you: the Badgers may have been displeased by the officiating.

It looks like it didn't matter if we won anyways. We had to forfeit our appearance.

EDIT: I see why now above.

Lake Superior won its second National Championship in as many Frozen Four appearances, defeating Wisconsin 5-3 in the title game.
Wisconsin's appearance would later be vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, the first time since the 1973 Frozen Four that a team was forced to vacate its appearance due to rules violations.

Like I've been saying in my weekly bracketology posts, Wisconsin still has a very good shot at St. Paul. Read his whole article, especially this part:

"Denver gets placed first, because it would be No. 1 overall, and then gets the "closest to home" spot, which would technically be St. Paul. But the committee has proven to take the more logical approach in the past, using the "a flight is a flight" philosophy. In other words, since Denver has to fly to St. Paul anyway, if it's better for "bracket integrity," it can be shipped East."

Also, the way the bracket sets up this week. It would be Denver, RIT, Alaska, and Yale in St. Paul. The attendance would be atrocious. NCAA would most likely move Wisconsins group which includes Bemidji to St. Paul.

Read about it here.

Denver is flying no matter where they go. Like Wodon's article says, the NCAA says a flight is a flight no matter where you are going. They can save money and boost attendance putting the field together like I did this week.

I hope you're right. I really have the itch to see some NCAA tourney hockey live. I haven't done that since the games were at the Kohl 2 years ago.

Sauer mentioned later that he still, to this day, has not watched the tape from that game.

Wisconsin's long NCAA title drought that followed certainly added to the infamy about that game - as well as Wisconsin's failures in Albany. It wasn't until Mike Eaves won a game there against Ohio State in the NCAAs (IIRC) that UW won a game again in that arena since the 92 Frozen Four.

Looking back at it, those UW teams from about 88 to 95 or so were pretty **** good across the board. They really ought to have come away with more than one title.

Remember, that 92 team was a 6 seed - one of the last two teams in the tournament - but was on an absolute tear in the NCAAs up to the championship game. They breezed through the region, defeating the #3, #2, and #1 seeds - 4-2 over UNH, 5-2 over St Lawrence, and 4-2 over Michigan.

Not necessarily. It's widely held that the NCAA specifically threw the book at Wisconsin for the complete lack of control in the championship game. Had they won the title, they would have gotten a slap on the wrist.

I think I have that game on VHS stored away in my <strike>porn</strike> tape library. I'll have to look for it and watch it during some free time.

I, along with entire Badger Nation, was ****ed.

Particularly since Maine is still the 1993 champion, but they were nailed for NCAA violations in 92 and 94 (but they didn't cheat during the season between, right....).

I'm a very very very amateur bracketologist, but it would seem to me that as long as St. Cloud and Bemidji stay on the same seed line (likely the #2), the Badgers have a pretty decent chance of winding up in St. Paul.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Doesn't mean anything but this years record 22-9-4 at the end of the reg season. 05-06??? 23-9-3... Obviously this years team is playing better to end the season then they did that year.

We're a lock for a #1 seed right now. If St. Cloud and Bemidji both end up as #2's, we're looking decent for St. Paul. If St. Cloud or Bemidji end up as the #6 overall (we're going to finish as the #3), I'd put money that we will be in St. Paul.

Totally fails to take an objective look at HOW those records were obtained.

Which is why it means somewhere in the area of slightly less than absolutely nothing.

I do believe I have a VSH of that game as well, not surrounded by naughty tapes, ;) but by Beavis and Butthead, Iron Chef and Rick Mears racing tapes.

I remember the day like it was yesterday. My girlfriend (now wife) baked me an all red and white cake that day. I went to watch it with her at her house on her parents extra 13" tv in the kitchen. I clutched my lucky stick (signed by the entire 1990 championship team) the whole game and drank red Koolaid. I can still see Doug MacDonald freaking out after getting a penalty while pk-ing in the 2nd period. I remember thinking "Wow, we're getting totally hosed by this ref, but we're still in this game", I was hopeful. I can still see the 4th goal sneaking between Duane's pad and the near post as he stood to face the shot by the guy swinging out of the corner. I have this desperate feeling in my gut right now like I did that day as they tried to tie the game. I can still see the sticks and gloves flinging down the ice after the puck on the empty net goal. I'm now instantly and utterly depressed.......:(

Not a happy memory for me either. Should have 7 titles right now. :(

Thanks for the pick-me up TIM... now I am ****ed because you reminded me of that game

A few years later, LSSU was in Milwaukee for some tournament; possibly an NCAA regional, and the reception they received was worse than any ever given to Minnesota or NoDak.
