Wisconsin Hockey 23-24: Hastily Making Wisconsin Hockey Great Again

I missed PB and Howie last night and watched the game taped delayed. Are they going to be on tonight as well?

Great win and fun to see this team play with passion.

Listened to PB and Howie in the car on my way home - great to hear their voices!!

I watched the last period and a half and Penn State carried play for a good portion of those 30 minutes. Too much stick handling in their own zone and at the top of the Penn State zone lead to too many good chances and odd man rushes. If McClellan doesn’t stand on his head on several occasions this turns into an old fashioned 6-5 shootout. They gotta get back to quick tape-to-tape passes in their zone and getting the puck deep when there is a lot of traffic at the top of the offensive zone.

I still think that Silye is gonna bust out at some point - glad that he got a goal last weekend.

Love the way that Owen Lindmark plays - tough and gritty with some skill.

Lets finish the week with a sweep heading into the break!!

14 -4!!!! Holy resurrection Batman. I was kind of irritated that they didn't come back with McClellan, I didn't understand that but that worked hard really well. The change in the performance of the goaltenders is absolutely the biggest part turnaround of the program so far. I think it just reiterates what a pathetic job previous staff was doing. McIntosh and King should really feel pretty stupid for giving the previous staff that one more year to turn around.

Great to see Strammel heating up, getting goals and assists.

The penalty kill last night was an absolute clinic on how to do it. To have 11 clears and only 4 shots of goal on a 5-minute major is completely insane. This team is so coached up right now it is ridiculous.

Paul Brown made a comment during the broadcast where he said the players were getting along really well. I would take that as he had inside information that the opposite was happening in the previous seasons. Negativity breeds negativity and positivity breeds positivity.

Howie is the best color analyst the planet has ever seen for hockey. Nobody talks about the forecheck or the defensive systems during the game and talks about how teams are adjusting to another team is doing specifically like he does. It is a lost art and it's rather sad.

I didn’t catch the game last night - was it on the B10 channel?

I’m assuming that the decision to platoon goalies this weekend was something that was planned and not something last minute. The glimpse into the future goal tending situation sure looks good based on the limited sample size.

The game was on btn+. I think the decision to play Gramme was based on his prior performance vs UAA and PSU’s “fire it at the net from everywhere in the zone all the time” which may lead to burnout?

i have to to say beyond nostalgia, listening to PB and Howie Friday night was pure gold. Howie’s “shot and a goal” call and PB’s insights are just incomparable.

…I have a feeling Mike Hastings is going to win 2-3 NCAA titles in Madison.

I agree the Goaltending is the most stunning, but the whole defensive system & philospohy & accountability is so night and day. Remember the countless times Berry, Jurusick, Rowe, Lebedeff, Hayton, Beydoun got absolutely hung out to dry by poor defensive play? Making stops as a last resort can only be done so many times before a Goalie will break down.

I always felt like TG was chasing good goaltending and couldnt see that. Time and space, accountability, good backchecking, and taking pride in positioning help create and sustain great goal tending.

If they have to travel with 13F and 6D, so be it. Its adversity and the team will have to deal with it and grow. You play with the players that want to be here, a player who would choose leave his teammates in the middle of the season isn’t someone I’d want as a teammate anyway.

I 100% agree with you and don't want the negative Nancy's around the team. It's still a concern for the second half, and that's all I was getting at.

Charlie Stramel has really come alive since being moved to wing. 5 points in 6 games.

Saturday on the post game with Posick, Hastings said Stramel has earned the right for more minutes and he didn't get them Saturday and Hastings said he addressed it with him after the game and he will be getting more minutes moving forward.

Holding PSU to their lowest two shots on goal games of the year and first time being swept this year was a thing of beauty to watch. Brilliant game plan all weekend and so nice to sweep PSU. Gadowsky is easy to dislike and I love dismantling his all offense gameplan and making them work on the D end, which they hate! Holding Fink to 1 assist was also great.

We backed out of season tickets this year, just not practical with a 3 yr old at home. Are trying to pick up a few games here and there where we can.
Took the kiddo to the first game of the season and had fun. We made our second trip to the Kohl Center on Saturday and had a blast.
Was kind of shocked to see a band and a 100 level full of students, was expecting very little with the volleyball game happening down the street.
Keeping the little guy occupied prevented me from watching the game in any depth, but what I saw looked pretty good.
The first goal was just one of those fluky things that happens. We deflected a shot and the PSU skater got all of the way around the back of the net before our guy could seal off to block the wrap-around. After that he was pretty locked in and put out a good game.
A few new/different things in the "fan experience" world that I noticed:
They had the little kid skaters come out before the game started, between the pregame warmups and the player introductions.
There was a new giant flag that the student section had (I think coming back from the 2nd intermission) that said "Beware the Crease Creatures" or something like that. Thought that was kind of cool.
Culver's did a promo during the 2nd intermission. Since the Badgers scored in the 2nd they had people up in the catwalk drop little goodies with parachutes attached from the 4 corners of the catwalk. An older gentleman near us caught a small stuffed Culver's ice cream cone mascot and had his neighbors pass it over to us. Totally made my little guy's night!
We grabbed tickets in the corner near the UW tunnel and were able to get down into the front rows after the game to say hi to the players as they were coming off of the ice. Coach noticed us and came over to give knuckles to the kiddo and shake my hand and say "Thanks for coming out tonight". Was a really nice moment from what appears to be a genuinely nice guy.

Oh, who is paying $9.50 for a beer at a game?!? That's crazy!!!

I'm excited for this! I'm wondering if this means he will be moving up the lineup or if he will be getting 2nd unit power play time. I always appreciate a player earning more minutes due to their play.

Next regular series: at Notre Dame 1/5/24 6 pm (TV - Peacock); Saturday 1/6/24 4 pm (TV – Peacock)

Who would have thought this team would be sitting 14-4 after the first half? This is likely an NCAA tourney team and no one will want to play this team. Good stuff and gives me chills typing that out.

Oh, who is paying $9.50 for a beer at a game?!? That's crazy!!!

I have been... :) :D :D

Glad you can take the little one.

We did that for years when ours were young - had both nights for a long time. A lot of nice memories.

Finally gave up the tix when our son was playing high school most Fridays and Saturdays (and the Badgers were sucking making it impossible to unload our extras).
