Wisconsin Hockey 23-24: Hastily Making Wisconsin Hockey Great Again

It was a win, but they didn't play really well at all. Watching the first game where both defenses were poor (and UMD really looked bad), my hope for tonight is Northeastern's defense is as bad as it was last night.

Some thoughts from the game tonight - I had a blast:
[*]One of the Zambonis was pretty beat up and you could see where the Roseville MN VFW Post advertising on the side had been peeled off - maybe Minnesota-Duluth towed it behind their bus on the way down.

LOL. UW could not have gotten one from Madison? Surely there is a way to get them out of the building.

The crowd looked good sized for a Thursday night game.

UW played better as they knocked the rust off as the game progressed. I suspect they'll be tight out of the box tonight. Super bummed they were 0 for on the PP. That could have put the game away. Conversely dodging the 5 minute major was the key to the game, so that was awesome, a sloppy penalty there.

If Silye gets on a roll, UW will be all that more formidable. Him and Cruz stand out, though Cruz is always very noticeable on the ice in a good way of course. I sure am glad the previous administration flipped him from the rodents.

I have a wedding tonight, so I won't be able to watch live, but I get to DVR it so I can watch tomorrow. I'll be following on the Tweeder however.

Let's go RED!

Looks like attendance was 8652 - would love to see them fill the lower bowl tonight.

The five minute Whitelaw major slipped my mind somehow - I think he got five for leaving his feet before contact.

I was just looking through the roster and there are actually 7 D-men. I assumed that Brady Cleveland was on the USA World Juniors team with Finley but I don't see him on their roster. Did I miss something - is he hurt??

My thoughts:

1. They were rusty but played great D and took care of business. AF is a lot better than their record. Solid team. Bucky weathered the storm.

2. Major on Whitelaw was for extending the elbow. He is lucky he didnt get a game misconduct.

3. The audio on Bally, or at least vis BTN+ was picking up a ton of ambient background noise. Made it sound emptier than it was

4. The pep band sounded...ill just say not good. Maybe hung over haha.

5. I dont expect a MKE crowd to know the chants as its alumni/families/casual hockey fans. Theres a fair amt of fans from other teams there too. After Silye's 1st the 'One, Two, we want more!' Was pretty noticeable.

6. Moved up one in the PW bc AF beat MSU earlier in the year. If we had beat Alaska the first night, we'd be number 1 in the PW

7. Big opportunity to beat NE who sits at 25, in think in PW. That and all the other pundits are gobsmacked and fawning over HockeyEast. Much more so than the BigTen or NCHC. Be good to send a clear message.

8. Posick said the upper should be open tonight. Would love to see 12K+ there tonight.

Lower bowl was sold out as they had several sections open in the upper deck. Best attendance in the 3 years of the tourney.

Cleveland was a healthy scratch.

The pep band was alumni band and they had a mic up there to amplify the sound. It was better than nothing. The new crazy sign guy and hey guy were both there too.

Posick said on pregame that Cleveland got dinged up in practice earlier in the week.

Hopefully that's the case and my information is incorrect. I was surprised Hastings had the extra forward in lieu of d-man on the line charts. They are at 6 if he was hurt.

Just got a ticket in the lower bowl for tonight. Pumped!

i haven’t seen a Badger game in Milwaukee since 2006 vs Maine and vs BC.

He didn't make it sound like it was serious, but then again no timeline for a return was mentioned.

Anyone else having issues with Big10+?

No BTN is working on my computer at least.

What a great effort by the boys. There is 8 min left in the game and they could still lose. But great effort. Way to represent the W. Thata Way!

Edit: winning the battles in the corners, diving for pucks, blocking shots...whew! Where's Jeff Sauer yelling with his left foot on the boards yelling at someone/no one?!

Just got home. Great game. Tassy and Whitelaw really stood out and Tassy has stood out to me all season. Great awareness and great passing. Speaking of, the entire team is making better and more creative passes and the defensive play is a 180 degree turnaround.

when Mike Hastings is done I believe he’ll have 2-3 NCAA titles in Madison and will be second only to Badger Bob in terms of greatness. Hell, if he wins more than 3 titles…he may surpass Badger Bob imo but let’s just have fun watching how great a coach he is and what a great TEAM he has right now

This game kinda followed the Air Force game where you get outplayed in the first period but lead 1-0, play a great second period, and then hold on in the third.

Tassy played a great game and has an edge to him that is fun to watch.

Northeastern had some of the same success on the forecheck as Air Force did on Thursday night - there were times where they had three guys well below the dots.

Bucky did a better job of blocking shots and had quite a few deflections which was lacking against Air Force.

McClellan's numbers are approaching Elliott'ish levels and that point blank blocker save in the third period tonight was about as good as it gets.

Overall a great weekend and me and my girlfriend had a great time.

They talked with Hastings about McCellan's summer fitness and nutritional routine. Sounds like he made a full commitment to being prepared before the season and it is showing. After the game interview with him, they tried to get him to take a bite of a Kwik Trip glazer, but he refused and mentioned he couldn't. :) He's doing well as the whole team is.

They are fun to watch and nice to see close man support most of the time. An effective 4' pass is better than a crappy long pass. GO Red!

Fantastic result.

I know it’s early, but a 1 seed in the NCAAs is ours to lose. No way BC, BU, and Maine get through the rest of the season without beating each other up.

Maine has already played their regular season games against BU and BC. BU and BC will play 3 games against each other in the 2nd half.

Friday was a much better game overall. The second period was a just a clinic. Ground down Northeastern like a cheese grater and a 19-1 shot advantage. McClellan was awesome again. He is so on his angles and dialed in right now. Him not taking a bite of the Glazier afterwords was something. Here is the video: https://x.com/BallySportWI/sta...45904394223697

McClellan not eating the glazer, not even taking a bite, is totally symbolic of the 100% buy in the team has to what is going on inside the walls and their heads. I think its only a matter of time before the NHL comes a calling for Hastings. I'm not sure if him selling "the dailies" will translate to the NHL but he's going to get interest. This resurrection will turn a lot of heads. I don't think Oliver will be here long.
