Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

It's been a rough year on the board. We are at each others throats. I love the passion. Just wish the team would start playing and winning consistently. I am actually losing interest. I had never been so excited for the year to begin and now regretting getting so hyped up. My concerns from the last couple of years with this staff, the system, etc. just seems to be continuing......

I am waiting for my socks to get knocked off again, as they have been firmly put back on (stealing from MadCityRich)......

This is like puppies crapping the carpet so far this year.....

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

In terms of points scored it’s hard to argue against Ahcan as a top-6 forward. He ranked 5th in returning scoring among forwards entering the season, and he’s 4th in scoring overall right now.

I’d agree that he has shown more heart than most so far, which isn’t much of a statement, but his ceiling isn’t as high as some of the guys who haven’t scored as much as him so far.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

Achan has earned top six time. The highest NHL ceiling isn't the only determining factor, as you don't need an NHL ceiling to be a great college player, you just need to play the college game great. Achan has done that a fair amount of his time on the ice and until somebody else steps up and knocks him out of there, he deserves to be there.

On this shot blocking thing from Tim's post. In case there's confusion, Wisconsin is tied with Miami at #6 overall in total shots blocked with 185. Inamoto is #4 in the country with 30.

USATA is unblocked shot attempts allowed and doesn't necessarily relate at all to how many shots you block. It's more about how many total shot attempts you give up. It's part of the Fenwick model which tries to determine puck possession through stats. (with varying degrees of success, especially in NCAA hockey)

One of the things about shot blocking stats that is indeterminate is the question of whether having a lot of blocked shots is a good thing or not. It would likely be better to have a lower number of blocked shots because you give up a lot fewer attempts. Where the sweet spot is for something like a blocks/game stat is a point of much debate. i.e. Giving up 100 shot attempts and blocking 30 is much worse than giving up 50 attempts and blocking 10.

Further example is that UND is probably #1 in USATA/gm but is #52 in total shots blocked. Why? Because they give up less than 40 total attempts/ game and less than 20 SOG/game.

Achan is a 4th liner??? Do you have functioning eyes??

Achan>>>Pelton-Byce

Achan has DOUBLE Holloway’s points.

What the hell is with this garbage? Achan has more heart than anyone on this entire ****ing team.

Achan has cooled off since he was put with the big dogs. I don't think he was a good fit with those guys. He looked invisible the last 4 games. He may have more points than Holloway, but the eye test clearly shows Holloway is more talented then him. He's the kind of guy whose line you match up with the other team's bigs and they run them into the ice through effort effort effort. He does have a bigtime heart, he just needs to know when to power down to avoid a dumb penalty. I do think we all can try and keep things cordial and fun.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

He should say less. He spent that past year touting this freshman class.... putting their live pictures on the big screen last year during a game?? Really? Talking about how this is the year. There was social media galore posts about these guys coming in. I have never seen or heard a college coach in any sport do that. Nick Saban didn't. Urban Meyer. Paul Chryst. Tom Izzo. None of those guys did that. It freaking basically tells the team and the incoming guys that they are gonna come in and walk on water and save the day. And the team doesn't have to do the dirty work in the corners or play as a team. I mean in hindsight that whole bravado talk crap was plain stupid.

Last week the team motto was "We gotta get on a run here to end the first half of the season and win 4 or 5 out of the next 6". Um no. You gotta win the next game. That's it. Win the next shift. What succesful coach at ANY level coaches his players like that? These players are kids and if they are worried about having to win a game 2 weeks from now against Michigan State or who ever and not concentrating on what they need to do now then they are probably gonna lose.

Granatos whole approach is messed up. Dude needs to eat some humble pie and yes, stop talking. He's got one of the most talented rosters in the country and he's screwing it up.

Just let them be 18 yr old kids who go to school, play hockey, drink beer and chase girls around. It will all come together.

Now there's an article on Goal's slump. Just what we need, more pressure on the kid.

Achan is Nick Licari. Good energy, hustle and heart. He’s not a Pavelski, Joudrey, Skille or Earl. I don’t think that’s difficult to see.

Oh no, there is only one Nick Licari. My favorite player to watch bar none. Always energetic, physical, mixing it up, smack talking enough to be a pest and always a crowd favorite. I do see some of that in Achan. But man hearing that name brings back good memories. There's been lots of better skill players, but from a pure entertainment value Nick is still my favorite.

Licari was a fireball out there!

Prior to him the badgers had a kid named T.R. Moreau under Jeff Sauer. I think he would have been in the same mold but his career was cut short by injury iirc midway through his freshman or sophomore year. My memory fails me on that.

Adam Burish had good energy, hustle and heart. He must be a 4th liner too cause he's not a Pavelski. Your logic is flawless.

A. Burish isn’t in the conversation.
B. Achan has been 4th line often and it fits his play. If you think he’s got something on Caufield, Turcotte, Holloway or Weissbach I want whatever thinner you’re Drinking.
C. Licari is apt comparison.

A. I just brought him into the conversation.
B. The fact you can't recognize that 2nd and 3rd lines exist clearly indicates you are actually using thinner. Those guys are 1st line talents, sure. Just because Achan isn't Caufield/Turcotte/Holloway/Weissbach does NOT mean he is a 4th liner. You're slowly figuring it out.
C. Licari had a career high of 17 points in 4 years at UW. Achan had 15 his freshman year and is on pace to obliterate that in his sophomore year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

Burish was a great captain. I remember when they had a bad stretch and he called for a player only meeting. I think we are lacking some of that type of leadership now with such a young team. My hope for someone like him is the now sophomore class (and it still might happen) as several of them where captains prior and were the gritty / energy type.

Dude, relax. I disagree Achan is a top 6 guy. That’s the crux of it. I said nothing about omitting or ignoring lines 2 and 3 btw.

I’ve seen championship level hockey at Wisconsin and other schools andto me, your guy is a 4th line energy player. Dennis Snedden, Don Granato, Brett Kurtz in 90.

Licari, Degenhardt in 06.

If you can’t take my opinion then pretty please with sugar on top, stick it.

You said he was a 4th liner. You made a stupid statement and now you’re backtracking cause you know you are wrong. Congratulations on figuring it out old man. Perhaps we can go back to your regularly scheduled complaining about how the younger generation doesn’t know **** about championship Wisconsin hockey. Hell, this post is already moving in that direction. Shocking.

You read that as backtracking? Lay off the thinner.
Achan is a 4th line type player imo on this team and on a championship level team.
Sorry you can’t handle different opinions. Must be tough to go through life that way.
I’ll let you acquaint yourself if you can to 73, 77, 81, 83, 90 And 06 winners and 82, 92 near misses for context on what it takes. Ring us back when you’ve absorbed a bit o’ history on what it took/takes.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

Ugh. This thread is just painful lately.

Hoping that some of us can get together before a future game to talk about the good times.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey 2019-2020: Time to Get Offensive

Maybe we should bring Ringo in here to talk to the boys about Wisconsin Hockey history like he did for the team. It didn't help them win, but I bet they learned something they never knew.

If it's coming to name-calling, then **** off you ****ing mother****ers :)::D:p (*sarcasm) who are accepting mediocrity (or worse) for Wisconsin Hockey for close to 15 years. 15 ****ing years!

In the past, we "old men" have seen the best college hockey in North America here in Madison and it hasn't been close for over a decade. You "young guys" haven't seen **** unless you're 20 or older if you can remember back to '06. So, the next time you decide to punk up and call names, I'm going to chase you down in my Golden Compass HD, detach my oxygen, and wrap my cane around your pencil neck.
Pardon us for yelling, "Get off my lawn" when we're told 4 years ago we'll get our socks blown off; not even close. My socks never got blown off, so I had to change them. As it turns out, the hype for this team over the summer was off the charts for nuttin', unless they run the table.

Bottom line boys, let us rant. It's not about " I remember when we used to...". It's about being accustomed to a successful, winning program, big crowds, fun crowds, not settling for a mediocre program.

Yep, you are one of the guys I want to drink with.
