Wisconsin Hockey 20-21 Give Us A Reason To Believe

Playing like last year tonight. Just terrible defensive coverage and Rowe gets his first action in goal.

Playing like last year tonight. ASU has 2 goals in four games. 5 goals in 30 minutes and pulled goalie for the badgers. Not his fault. Terrible defensive zone coverage.

Should also be noted that we are currently skating 9 total real forwards with Holloway, Pelton-Byce, Baker, Achan, and Mersch all out for their own reasons (oof)... We have two D playing forward. Could explain errors on the defensive side.

Todd posted the starting lineup as such:

Weissbach-B Caufield-C Caufield
Gorniak-Lindmark-Stange
Dhooghe-R. Donovan-DSP
S. Donovan(D)-XXXX-LaMaster(D)

I haven’t posted it on here, but the coaching staff really had poor personnel management coming into this season. With the amount of uncertainty surrounding this season and know all the Big Ten protocols with COVID, how does the coaching staff manage to agree upon less players on the roster than a normal year. If there are 15-16 forwards on the roster (like there should be) we probably don’t see the situation we saw tonight.

I agree defensive zone coverage was poor but Beydoun and Rowe probably wish they could take at least 3 goals back.

Hi again, boys. I've been holding back thoughts.....until tonight.

Swept a shitty Ped State team. Swept Notre Dame, who swept MI, who was swept by Notre Dame.

I don't know what to take from tonight's game, but we should not get pounded with 8 goals.

Just not excited.

One goal on a 4-2 breakaway. One goal happens when two defenders attack the puck just off the net leaving a man undefended on Robbie’s back door.

Didn’t track how bad some of the other goals were, but knowing Granato, he’s outraged at the goalies for the mistakes of the guys in front of them.

I refuse to blame Beydoun or Rowe. It’s not as bad as what Lebedeff had to put up with, but they aren’t being done a lot of favors. And with Granato’s history of throwing goalies under the bus for stuff they can’t control, I’m giving any goalie suffering under TG a long leash.

Posick just said that ASU's 3rd and 4th lines have 8 goals so far this weekend... If we are matching our 3rd and 4th against their's then that would explain it a bit.

1st goal - 100% on Beydoun
2nd goal - really poor dzone coverage
3rd goal - 1 second to slow on the center getting out to block the shot
4th goal - bad dzone coverage
5th goal - I don't know how anyone could blame this on poor d coverage.
6th goal - just out smarted on a 4-on-2
7th goal - 2-on-1 shorthanded with an all forward power play unit out there

My opinion is 1&5 should have been stopped for sure. I'm not here to oust Beydoun though, he's been a rock. Just a couple bad goals he probably wants back.

Does anyone else feel like Cole Caufield is being too much of a puck hog? It feels like every time he has the puck he'd rather try to deke through a player than make an easy pass to a teammate. Drives me up a wall.

When the team gets behind, he definitely tries too hard to do things himself. But, I’m more frustrated with Linus the past two days. Despite his better offensive output this year, we have to get Weissbach off the top line. He does the opposite of Cole - he just gives up when the chips are against them. Case in point, the team is down two late in the second - a totally accomplishable gap - Cole tries to pass it to Weissbach and he either drops his stick or it breaks, and he does the most lackadaisical slow skate back all the way across the ice while the puck was still live, leaving the team essentially down a skater while his replacement waited straddling the dasher. It was a moment that won’t be remembered, but it’s the kind that needs to be nipped in the bud by the coaches. Unfortunately, benching him isn’t a legitimate threat when half the forwards have COVID.

The whole team looked completely gassed in the third tonight. And I can’t blame them. As Todd noted, while ASU’s third and fourth lines did almost all the scoring, the Badgers essentially didn’t have third and fourth lines. Who’d have thunk six months ago that having four forwards live together would result in them all missing almost a quarter of the season. Crazy.

The "top line" forwards were -8 on Sat and -6 today, they are a liability out there. When are they going to start being held accountable for their play in their own end. This team has zero grit, their energy stinks and its a team of individuals. The last few years have been some of the worst coaching I've seen in a long time. I love my Badger hockey but I can't even stand watching this garbage anymore.

That’s a good encapsulation of all but granato’s first year in Madison.

caufield is huge defensive liability and doesn’t score at a pace to offset that shortcoming. He’ll get run right over in the NHL. If he were smart he’s beat down and learn to play 200 feet or he’ll be playing in junior leagues.

at the end of today’s game there was another moment that exposed this team’s lack of grit and character (which is the opposite of how TG and MO played). Kehrer was hit/clipped in the knee by an ASU punk with just seconds left in the game.

how many guys for Wisconsin skated over to drill that ASU player? Essentially 0. That speaks volumes as to the lack of cohesion and chemistry.

a hit like that with McDonagh, any of the Suters, Driver, Chelios, Burish, Mellanby, Hill or any of the 1990 team on the ice and that punk from ASU would have paid a heavy price.

Granato doesn’t coach how he played and that’s ultimately his biggest issue imo. This product is soft and lame to watch. There’s no hope for fans and no accountability from players and Oseicki needs to be blamed as well. His Dmen no longer play championship level hockey.

So I shouldn't fire up the DVR this week? I may watch the Saturday game. I am curious about how the D played. They really needed to win the Saturday game. The Sunday game's outcome was predictable considering the F situation with injuries and C19.

I would watch if you like seeing play consistent with the last 4 years......
