Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Their tourney is in Belarus, of all places. Even so, they'll probably still be the most hated other than maybe the Russians.

It would be hard for me to sieve any team USA goalie and I wouldn't heckle any of the other players either. I'm sure they've heard it all before though and can take it, so if any of you feel the need to give a bunch of teenagers a hard time and show them how witty you are, go for it.

I'm not even sure who I'd root for in that game...

I was just joking...really just wanted to work in "Canuckistanian" on the eve of tomorrow's tilt up in Saskatchewan.

That said, calm down. Though my days of audibly cheering for much of anything are long behind me, getting on the US guys in a loud, fun, clean and non-idiotic manner is nothing worth acting all indignant about.

Players respect it when it's done the right way and it's done good-naturedly. Do it right...and consider it a recruiting tool. 15k people sieve the guy and they'll think it's great, ultimately.

If done right, it's the atmosphere that will be remembered -- and only in a positive way.

Feeling a wee bit Nationalistic today.

Seriously, even though I'm a Badger fan and have been my whole life, there's an internal block when it comes to rooting for anyone over a Team USA.

Go USA!

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

I think that it would be fair to say that, for the vast majority, shuffling games onto increasingly obscure and difficult to find channels isn't a whole lot different than not having them on TV at all.

I live in Milwaukee and have Time Warner Cable. As such, I'm pretty much limited to WPT replays and whatever scraps FSN and BTN are willing to give me. If I had the normal sports package, I could see the games that are on FCS, but that only gets me so far.

Maybe I'm wrong on this one, but haven't there also been fewer games on WPT that have bee live, as opposed to tape delayed? I supposed that's more of a budget issue for WPT than anything else, but for some reason I feel like there were more live games when I was in school. (And maybe I'm just saying that because I never had to watch on TV when I was in school)

I don't remember (but being old sometimes I don't remember what I had for breakfast) any live games on WPT. A local station may have purchased the feed from WPT and broadcast it, but WPT didn't show it live. They all were shown at 10:30pm. In the old days (early 80's) WPT used to show them at night and the next morning.

I believe this is correct. When I lived in the dorms in the mid-90's I remember seeing a couple live WPT games, but i think that had to do with UW campus programming channel(only found in the dorms) obtaining the rights to broadcast the game. When I got out the dorms I don't think I've ever seen a live WPT game on the WPT channel. I have seen a lot less WPT tape delayed though. I believe this has to do with the BTN. If i remember correctly if FSN doesn't pick up the Badger game, then the BTN has rights to every Badger home game. If the BTN is streaming the game, WPT cannot broadcast it.

WPT seems to have moved their delayed broadcast to one of their digital channels (21.1 or 21.2, don't remember which).

But this isn't an international competition. This is an exhibition game. USA Hockey schedules games like this because of the competition and atmosphere it provides the players to prepare them for what they are going to see on an every weekend basis once they get to college.

Like XYZ noted, the players from the U18 squad are already expecting to get sieved and heckled. And I'm sure they are excited about it. Don't disappoint them.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Can someone give me a brief description of who the US-Under 18 Team is?

The Under-18 team is a group of about 22 kids that USA hockey selected as the best players from the age group of (this year) 1992 birthdates. USA Hockey evaluates players over a couple years in summer select festivals. They also hold a tryout when they invite usually the top 40 players in the country to all skate together but there are players that make the team who aren't invited to the tryout (McCabe).

The first year you skate on the U17 team (usually your junior year in HS). The next year you are moved to the U18. There are always a couple kids who don't like it or are kicked off so a couple kids (John Ramage) will join the program just for the U18 season.

The U17's play about 3/4 of thier schedule in the USHL and 1/4 of their schedule internationally. The U18's play about 1/4 of their schedule in the USHL, 1/4 of their schedule internationally, and 1/2 their schedule against college hockey teams.

The program is based out of Ann Arbor. Kids live with host families and work and train together for two years under the best coaches and trainers available provided by USA Hockey.

Need Tickets

Hi guys. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can get tickets for the Jan 29 game at Duluth? I cannot go the $25 ticket office route. Is the DECC a place I can go to and find tickets on the street for under face?

Is this the team Eaves used to coach?

Sorry, just can't get past the logo on the front. Plus, they're 17 year olds and to my thinking are the underdogs.

I'm hoping that they are cheered during the intros, but that may be asking too much.

I don't remember any PBS telecasts being live, and I go back to the mid 80's. I would get home from work @ 10:30 pm during HS and College and watch UW games. The good old days. Then when they were away, I'd have to drive 12 miles to the nearest town that had a WI St Journal and buy one to see if they won or lost the day before. Eventually I suscribed to it, but out here in the boonies, I'd get the paper the next day. It's kind of crazy to think that I'd have to wait til the next day to see if they won or lost. Now any result for anything is just a few clicks away.

I know poles are meaningless, but it's cool to see UW @ #4. It's been awhile.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Don't ever wish for that.

I was a long time customer of Charter, yeah, they sucked, but hell, at least they opened up their "infomercial channel" (Charter Mainstreet) for Badger Hockey (at least for most of the home games, anyway). My current carrier isn't much to talk about either, way over priced, but that comes with living out in "the boonies."

I'm wondering about the girls game tonight. Two current badgers and five former Badgers, including one of the best female goalies ever to play the game. And coached by a UW legend as well. I think I'll just end up cheering for everyone.

I caught the game back in Fond du Lac between the USA team and badger women...must have been seven or so years ago. It was a great atmosphere and everyone was cheering for great hockey, not one team. USA ended up practicing passing after a 8-0 lead or so but it was still exciting to have the crowd cheer for the badgers women to score (unfortunately, they did not).

I do not know about the U-18 game. I want to go about being a normal badger fan but I do not think I can sieve a team USA goalie (we will find out). I think I will be more passive and just watch for some great hockey.

On behalf of the country and the New York Rangers, thank you for Derek Stepan.

It will be fun to watch him on the Center Ice package as he deals for you guys. Some of those passes... Just let us keep him for one more season after this one... K? :D

He's been good for us, but he really elevated over the past couple of weeks. It'll be interesting to see how he maintains when he gets back to the more physical game in the NCAA.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Well Varsity Wisconsin, are you now okay with us lending a few to the cause?

• Our program got several nice shout outs throughout the tourney and especially at the end of the game tonight.

• Stepan elevated his game and will probably be better down the stretch than he would have had he not gone.

• And we even won the utterly meaningless(in comparison) Badger Showdown without them.

Before you all jump on me, I was at the games and am glad we won and I realize that we are now 4th and the tie with Yale will help in the pairwise and all that, but the WJC is so much bigger than one weekend of college hockey in January.

Now for the second half!

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

As we move into the second half of the season and Stepan is back and Murray is heathy, we have a bit of a log jam at forward again. What do you do with Dolan and Thurber. For the UND series and the Showdown, Thurber was in my opinion one of the better Badgers on the ice. During the Showdown I thought Dolan provided some spark to the 4th line, so who goes where.

The line that I think needs to have a shake up is the Street line. Derek Lee has been given an opportunity to show what he can do (played well against UAA & Mich Tech) but disappeared against strong physical teams like North Dakota. When Stepan gets back to practice he will move back onto a line with Davies & Murray, and I think Blake's line will remain intact. I would like to see Thurber move to center between Bomber and Street. On the 4th line I would like to see Bendy between Grotting and Johnson/Dolan.

I think that these combos will make us better on both the offensive but also the defensive ends of the ice.

Just this guy's opinion.
