WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

A recap from Green Bay tonight for UW tomorrow.

Green Bay beat Team USA (U-18 version) 3-1, as the Gamblers' Steve Summerhays outdueled gold-medal winning Jack Campbell - with USA outshooting GB 28-26.

Green Bay got a shorty and a power goal in the first period and lead 2-0. USA totally dominated play in the second, but only tallied one goal. 2-1 GB after 2.

Play more even in the third, but neither team could score. USA pulled Campbell with about 1:30 left. With 26.1 left, GB's goalie got a roughing penalty after a scrum in front of the net, so a 6-on-4 power play. GB cleared the puck and it rolled in for the final.

The USA players seemed surprised, offended even, whenever they got a penalty. When GB played USA close to the body, USA struggled. When USA got to play in space, they controlled the puck very well and controlled play. That could be more of an opportunity for them on the big KC ice.

Team USA isn't anything Bucky shouldn't be able to handle, but they are skilled club to be wary of. And the likely won't be in a good mood. Sorry about that. ;)

I was happy to hear DSteps finally got his gold medal after the idiot airlines lose his things. :)

Why are Grotting and Smith out? nursing injuries? I haven't read anything about this yet

Smith still has a sore wrist from the Merimack injury and Grotting had a sore knee going into the Showdown.

They will be replaced by Turnbull and Lee.

Well, the KC faithful never fail to disappoint. I realize that not many understand what happened on Tuesday, but the complete non recognition of Campbell when he was introduced was weak as was the polite applause for the 5 gold medal winners in attendance during the ceremony. Badger fans can really be pathetic.

The students were pretty good though with a nice God Bless America and USA chant and then a "U" "S" "A" chant instead of "You Still Suck" when the youngsters finally scored.

Despite the outcome, USA had some moments and it's pretty surprising that those are all 16 and 17 year olds. USA looked good for the first 10 minutes or so but then we started to assert ourselves and they couldn't match us.

Finally, I refused to sieve Campbell. Just can't do it.

Good luck to those boys. Bring home the Gold!

That's too bad. Why did UW have to ruin Jack's confidence by shelling him for 6 goals? ;)

The Ralph gave Kristo a couple minute standing ovation during the ceremony at REA. Kristo looked to have some tired legs though, didn't look his usual self. I guess that's to be expected with how many games they played in a short timespan.

Yeah, Campbell looked frustrated by the end, but he can console himself tonight with his medal under his pillow.

I shouldn't be so negative about the KC crowd. They did give a nice cheer to Campbell & Zucker, a nicer cheer to Ramage & Gardiner and a rousing cheer to Stepan, but I'm not sure whether a lot of them even knew why they were cheering for Steps. "Derek Stepan, YEAH!"

My issue comes with only about 10 of us even knowing who Campbell is until they pointed it out in the ceremony, after his own intro as USA's goalie. I know, I have unrealistic expectations.

You Sioux fans now have a history with the WJC and U18, so I believe that overall, your fans are much more in tune with it. Glad to hear that Kristo got a nice reception. I'm still on a high from that win on Tuesday and I have to say it was surreal as heck to have Zucker and Campbell on the ice right in front of me only 5 days later. Really cool for me.

And I also have to say that I was quite torn in my loyalties. I rooted for Bucky, but not real hard. What a weird thing to go to a Badger game and not really want them to win.

I need a drink...

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt during the UND/USA WJC team game exhibition before Xmas. It was fun just watching the game and seeing the talent on the USA side.
Little did we know that they'd be winning gold just a few short weeks later. :)

That does sound disappointing (the quasi-recognition for the gold medalists).

But the students whipped out "God Bless America"? That's pretty cool.

Better wait til others chime in. Maybe I'm being too tough. It wasn't horrible, but it certainly didn't meet my hopes or expectations.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

I never really get my hopes up for fans at the KC to understand anything outside of the realm of Badger hockey, so I was not disappointed.

I was glad to participate in the U-S-A cheer instead of You-Still-Suck. Our student section has limited class at times but I was happy to see that we exercised our class at that point

As for the "God Bless America" singing, it was very good. There is a group of students who are very good singers and harmonize during songs like "Roll out the Barrel" and "In Heaven there is no Beer." They took over during "God Bless America" and it turned out very nicely.

As for the game...I thought it was very entertaining. USA surprised me by keeping up with UW and actually having a number of chances. I was happy they got the goal near the end as well; they deserved one.

Bennett started this game but do you think they will go back to the Friday/Saturday rotation? I hope they stick with Scott, since I do not feel that he has done anything to lose the starting spot. Also, he does not dick around with the puck as much as Bennett and that always makes me nervous. I also think Scott has better rebound control, but to be honest I haven't paid as much attention to that as of late.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Hell, a good chunk of the people at the games aren't even Badger hockey fans, they're just Badger fans, and often don't know seemingly obvious things about "their own" team.

I think I was tough on the two future Badgers on the ice for USA. I wasn't impressed with either of them. If they expect to suit up next year they will be in for a rude awaking.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Talked to one of the U18 kids and he was absolutely gushing about the campus, the rink, and the game.

He obviously wanted a better outcome but said the team was very impressed with Wisconsin. Also told me Mersch and Simonelli are very lucky to be headed to UW.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Listen,
No one should have expected a huge ovation for the gold medal winners.
Why you ask? Because UW was playing a U-18 team and many people didn't go. If it was a WCHA game, it would have been a lot louder and longer. The 3 players will probably get a very good ovation in a couple weeks against Denver...........I hope. ;)

I give Bennett credit for putting his body on the line when he went out of the net to take away that breakaway chance and got plowed over. From what I've seen I think Scott has been the better goalie this season, but the rotation is working, so I hope they stick with it for the next few weeks until one can really have a dominant, defining win over a solid opponent.

So how did the national athem end...Sue or Brave?

UW goaltending....I'm really torn. On the one end, Goody has played a bit better overall than Bennett, but Bennett has certainly played well, so on that side of the ledger I would not be opposed to seeing the rotation continue. On the other hand, come playoff time, I prefer 1 guy gets the nod, so why not just give that guy the most of the starts now (Goody), and play Bennett once out of every 4. The thing that does not sit well with me was that Bennett played his worst game in his biggest game to date (the rodents), and Goody has played well in tight games against better competetion than the rodents. I just convinced myself to give the nod to Goody.

Thurber put points on the board again....Eaves needs to keep him on the top 3 lines somehow.

I do really love how UW took care of business Saturday night. A far cry from the last time UW played these guys. I just about had a stroke that night, but a huge 3rd period carried the day and kept me out of the hospital.
