Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

This could continue to be a big issue. If not against some code or ordinance, they should try to oversell official capacity or hold a certain amount of tickets available only at LaBahn 60 minutes prior to face-off.

While students get in with their Red Card, if the game is sold out in advance, the Red Card is invalid. Not exactly a great way to increase student attendance.

Hopefully, there are some better answers this year. All the second semester home games look to be rivalry games, so sellouts are likely.

This would be great. Before the Friday game against the Gophers last year, I showed up an hour early, got my ticket, ate lunch, then came back. It didn't end up being a sellout anyway, but it worked out fine.

Regardless of Red Card possession, walking up and paying $2 for a ticket is much more practical for students than buying in advance.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

I just sent a fairly lengthy email to the ticket office about that problem, and advocated for Badger Booster's suggestion. It's not an obviously fixable problem, but I hope they respond with some action. I also added a plea for Fill the Bowl to return, full of great rationale :D.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

Fill the Bowl is back! February 15 against Minnesota, no less. With it being that late in the season, that game (series) could have league title ramifications.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

Roster also got released...finally. Nice to see McKeough on the roster, though not sure if that means she'll be able to play at all.

YES! I'm sure the wheels were put in motion before I sent my message about ticketing a week ago, but I included this -

"In any way possible, please bring back "Fill the Bowl" at the Kohl Center. I know that it was done in partnership with Becker Law Offices, who have continued to sponsor causes for local food banks at Wisconsin women's hockey games. I understand that with tickets at 1/5 of the price, drawing 5x as many fans brings in about the same gate revenue. However, more fans will be there to pay for parking and concessions. Most of all, however, it exposes so many more people to Wisconsin Women's hockey, all of whom will be more likely to come to games in the future. Also, it's an incredible experience for the women's hockey team. I was at the 2012 game, and noticed all the players looking up and soaking it all in. Why do most university athletic departments operate at a financial deficit? The student life benefit is invaluable. This got students in the door for free. Some were hockey fans who hadn't been exposed to UW women's hockey before. Others hadn't been to a men's hockey game, but came and saw the band and the students carrying out traditions unique to UW hockey, unmatched at basketball or even football games. With all the talk/analysis over the summer about declining men's hockey attendance, this would not be a bad thing."

That's why I'm happy about it. Also, it's like a bonus men's game.

Friggin awesome! I'll be hopefully rounding up 2-3 vans worth of casual hockey fans like last time. I would have maybe set my sights higher and called it "Fill of Kohl".

Ammerman and McKeough coming back is huge. UW should be in the title fight all year.

I am so ready for some hockey, mega expectations on both sides of the ledger, just like 2006.

Bring on the Red Meatballs. :)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

"Fill the Bowl" on the WCHA site mentions the goal to set a new women's college hockey attendance record, which I believe was set at Ridder last year, MN vs. WI

you'd think a lot of people would be willing to spend a buck to see the game, 15,000+ and fill it maybe?

I wonder if the MSU/MN outdoor game at TCF can draw more than 15,000 when the ticket price is $15 which includes the men's game later (MN vs. Ohio State). And I wonder if they will be keeping an accurate count of how many people actually attend the women's game.

It will be interesting to see how many attend both events.

I thought UW already held the record from a previous Fill the Bowl event?

That's correct. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head, but in 2011 they drew over 10K, and in 2012 they drew over 12K (I think it was 12,400 and change). In 2010, they set the record at Camp Randall Stadium.

Well, I don't know how they calculated the Camp Randall attendance, but officially it was only 8,263 (2/6/2010 vs. Bemidji State). The attendance for the Badger men's game (against Michigan) was 55,031.

You're correct about the two Kohl Center games... official numbers were 10,668 for the game against Minnesota on 1/29/2011 and 12,402 against Bemidji State on 1/28/2012.

Very excited that Fill the Bowl is back. Best news I've heard coming out of the UW Athletic Dept. in a long time. Hopefully the matchup with Minnesota will help make up for the loss of momentum by not having the game last year. The game date also falls right in the middle of the Sochi games, might have women's hockey at the top of mind for more casual fans.

Last year's WI/MN game set a Ridder Arena record, and was the first sellout in the history of Gopher Women's hockey with 3,400 fans. That is far shy of the NCAA record set at a previous Fill the Bowl. In fact, it wasn't even the record for a Gopher Home game - which is 6,800ish, which they set during the first game in the program's history, playing in Mariucci.

I'm guessing they'll count it based on the number of people who come through the gates before/during the Womens game. I'm guessing that's what happened to get the attendance for the Camp Randall game. Either way, I'm curious how it will draw. The MN outdoor game is on a Friday Night, which could make it tough to get many people inside the stadium for the Women's game at 4, on the other hand, the game time is much closer to the start of the mens game making for more of a true doubleheader. The Camp Randall game was on a Saturday, but the women played relatively early in the afternoon, so those of us who came to watch the women had a couple hours to wait around before the mens game.

Great breakdown of the Fill the Bowl and attendance issues. With the games at TCF Stadium (didn't realize it's on a Friday which is interesting), the difference in bodies-in-seats at the start of the women's game vs at the end of the game could be huge. Not sure they can hit 13,000-15,000 at 4 on a Friday afternoon, but by 6 there seemingly would be over 20,000+.

I went to Camp Randall for both games, but there was several hours between games which was a hassle. Had to kill a lot of time warming up in the Shell before heading back in the stadium for the men's night game. No doubt the women's crowd would have bigger if the game times were closer.

To be fair, the Gophers franchise record of 6800 set back in 1997 was also the record for all of Women's Hockey for 13 years (unless there is another, bigger, pre-NCAA game I'm not aware of). It wasn't broken until the outdoor games in 2010, and wasn't broken at an indoor rink until Fill the Bowl in 2011 (which they happen to be playing in.) The Gophers haven't played in a venue big enough to break the record since then, so it will be interesting to see what number they come up with at TCF.

Again, it just boggles the mind that the, "state of hockey" would allow any other state to hold the record. Youd think they wold have had an outdoor game and priced tickets so cheaply that they lost money just for the bragging rights. Remind me to laugh when the game is at TCF and they still fail.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '13

I pulled the trigger on the season tickets I have been considering. I do appreciate all the feedback from the UW fans as I have considered this. The schedule looks really great with none of those ridiculous Friday 2 pm games. I give the UW some positive credit for this big change. Without that change, I probably don't buy the tickets. As of right now I can get to every game if I want to. Now I'm considering a day trip to Ridder on 10/12. I could get home by midnight, which would not be too bad. I just don't know if wifeypooh will buy into the idea. Maybe I could stay over in Lacrosse if I have to.

11 days til I see come live hockey.

Make it an overnight trip and entice her with an all-she-can spend day at the Mall of America. :)

It's at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon. So laugh if you want but Madison wouldn't do well, either.
