Thought there should be a thread on the Winter Classic. I am sick of seeing the Pens on Versus, NBC, etc. Granted Sid is hockey's Michael Jordan but enough is enough. I think this one should have been Rangers vs. Islanders at Citfield. I would be interested in your thoughts.

Pretty much the wrong year to complain about Crosby, really. 30 goals and 61 points before the halfway point of the season and on a 20 something game point streak.
No one wants to watch the Islanders, even Islander fans. If they were trying to be fair as opposed to being all about ratings, I would have wanted something like a Dallas/Minnesota or LA/SJ at Colorado.
They're not, so you'll get Philly and the Rangers next year probably and another Pittsburgh at someone game in 2013.

Boston-Montreal would be a good matchup, Toronto vs Detroit at say Michigan Stadium or even Comerica would have been a cool matchup as well.

I could see the Rangers/Devils at the meadowlands next year possibly, although you run into having to coordinate both the Jets and Giants being out of town. Obviously Yankee Stadium is out with the Pinstripe Bowl.

NBC, so cross out those Canadian teams right off the bat. It will help if you use the same map that NBC uses when selecting their Sunday games during the NHL season.

How come the Rangers haven't been mentioned to be in the Winter Classic for next year? I know that aren't laden with stars, but this team can play. Leafs-Rangers should happen because they are the only 2 Original Six teams not play outdoors.

this ain't about letting the O6 play...
they (they) want the biggest stars (Sid, Alex) and the best teams (Pitt, Chi, Det, Pit) with the biggest draws (Fenway Park)..
frankly, nobody watching on NBC give a chit about the rangers or the leafs. heck, 99% of the people that regularly watch NBC give a chit about hockey

I think the Rangers have a very good shot at being in it next year.
The NHL wants to get it to New York, but the whole Yankee stadium pin stripe bowl through a wrench into those plans.
There are still CitiField and the New Meadowlands as possibilities.
Rangers/Islanders or Rangers/Canadiens would be perfect IMHO.

Agree with PJ09 that the Rangers are a natural choice. Big market, original six, etc. I don't think you are going to see a Canadian team because they are starting back up the Heritage Classic. This year it is Calgary vs. Montreal.

Nyr could host Chi or Bos. Pit has been in twice in four yrs. So no reason to think they need to pull in some nothing team to spread it around.

You think the Pinstripe Bowl will even be around next year?? Personally should have had it there the last year they could have had it at the Old Yankees Stadium, but eh, didn't work out I guess...
That would be another good matchup that would draw eyeballs.
Do a straight up doubleheader. Islanders-Devils in the early game, with the Rangers taking on either Toronto or Montreal in the nightcap. Hell, if you really want to get crazy, make it a triple-header with bringing in Ottawa, and have the three NYC area teams taking on the Canadians. The Canucks would come out in droves for an event like that, and would drop a lot of very nice tourists dollars into the area, along with probably staying for all 3 games as well.

The reason nothing's happened in NY yet for a Winter Classic is actually the fault of the Yankees. Meadowlands might happen in the future but you need a major draw with the Rangers to make it happen and look nice for TV. If the Kings made a deep run this year and got LA back on the map, that's a potential team to do it with.
Detroit wants one in the Big House badly but not having Toronto to choose from (bad team, US national TV death) that hurts. Doing Detroit-Chicago will not happen again. There's no real buzz about what's up for next year but they're snooping around Baltimore/DC (for a future spot I'm sure) and I know the new Meadowlands is getting scoped out.
