Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

The reason nothing's happened in NY yet for a Winter Classic is actually the fault of the Yankees. Meadowlands might happen in the future but you need a major draw with the Rangers to make it happen and look nice for TV. If the Kings made a deep run this year and got LA back on the map, that's a potential team to do it with.

Detroit wants one in the Big House badly but not having Toronto to choose from (bad team, US national TV death) that hurts. Doing Detroit-Chicago will not happen again. There's no real buzz about what's up for next year but they're snooping around Baltimore/DC (for a future spot I'm sure) and I know the new Meadowlands is getting scoped out.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool ;)

But seriously, it seems clear that the Winter Classic will be American Cities, as Canada has the Heritage Classic thing going. I'd have to guess The Rangers are high on the list for the NHL, the best opponents for them is Buffalo, Boston or Philly (leaving out the Isles and Devils). L.A. is tricky, it was 113 there in September, and while that is September, its supposed to be in the low to mid 60s there this week. Minnesota would be a good winter spot at TCF Field, since it seems the stands are right on top of the field (from what Ive seen). The problem with that is, who do the Wild play? Avs vs. Red Wings would have been nice a few years ago from Mile High.

I like this one. Would have been great w Sakic, Bourque, etc but the Avs are on the asend. You never know. Holding down fifth in Western conf. right now.

I've wanted to see Minn/Dallas for a while. Minnesotans would love it!

I can see New York getting a game next year...but who do they play?

Minnesota vs. Dallas will not draw ratings nationwide. period. Both markets would draw pretty well.

Ratings are going to be an issue this year for the NHL. Michigan and Michigan State both play at 1pm on New Years Day, so there goes a lot of your viewers from Michigan. Penn State plays at 330 I believe and last year, Penn State outdrew Philly vs. Boston in the Philly market.

Rangers vs. Boston/Buffalo/Philly/Montreal would be the best choice.

Though, I can see the NHL trying to get the southern market into this, so maybe The 'Yotes. :P since they still own the team.

Maybe Hamilton at Winnipeg next season for the Heritage Classic?

Penn State and Michigan State at 1, Michigan at 1:30, and less than a month from when pretty much anyone in Michigan interested in seeing outdoor hockey could have gone to Ann Arbor and see some live.

The NHL can kiss those two states goodbye for ratings.

I've been more interested in the football lately anyway. Outdoor hockey's lost its "shock and awe" value since it started occuring multiple times a year, and I'm frankly sick of the same 7 teams on NBC anyway. I'm reasonably certain that if last year's conference finals had gone the opposite way, NBC would have rather bought out of the contract then show Montreal and San Jose a number of times.

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

Fine fine. Bettman probably wants Phoenix and Atlanta in Las Vegas or something like that. :p

Ratings are king, unfortunately. So the Winter Classic isn't getting ANY Canadian teams, and will be hard pressed to get anything outside of Boston, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Pittsburgh, or Buffalo.

The only ones outside of those that I could see happening are New Jersey, St. Louis, Colorado, and Minnesota.

And huge outside shots are San Jose, LA, Columbus, and Carolina.

So teams are going to be playing in them every 4-5 years.

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

Doing it every year has already gotten old. The novelty wears off completely when they start thinking about repeating a venue -- and unless they open it up to Canadian hosts, that's 3 or 4 years from now. It must be expensive, and the moment the expected value function drops below zero, it's over.

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

The following is a decent USA Today article on possible venues for Winter Classic. We covered most of them.

Yeah, Busch Stadium there has been about the only one we really haven't kicked around. Best bet would be the Blues against the Blackhawks I think, playing up the Cards-Cubs rivalry. Only thing they would really need is the Blues to be like really good for a while.

62 and drizzle should make for some fine outdoor hockey

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

The game has be rescheduled to 8 pm on Saturday.

Right move, according to Ovie.

"It's better," said Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. "We have a game almost every time [in the evening]. It's going to be OK because you can sleep. You can eat normal food like steaks, spaghetti and just take a nap before the game.

"If it's going to be at 8 p.m., you can celebrate New Year's too."

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

Thanks everybody for participating in the thread. It was my first attempt at starting one. Prediction time - Caps 3 Pens 2, Ovie with the game winner. Hope the weather in Pittsburgh cooperates.

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

If the NHL had any patience they would start to pace out these games and spread them around the country. Denver, Detroit, Minnesota. But I don't think either the NHL or NBC have the patience and I believe they'll run this game series into the ground.... and I fully expect them to pull a Qatar some time soon. The NHL has had a problem for some time in that they don't understand their own sport but they seem to be enamored by business-minded conventional wisdoms... a big one of those is celebrity.... they want the fame factor... the problem is that it ends up like a feedback loop... ESPN has had that problem in that a lot of people you see on TV want to be famous and with other famous people and it clouds their ability to do work or it creates conventional wisdoms. The NHL has also had issue with other things they can't bring themselves to facing... southern market problem for one.

I think it's just a matter of time before the NHL screws up.

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

Not a surprising comment from him. We all know that at this point in his career, Ovie is more or less in it for the partying and the chicks. :D

My favorite quote from the 24/7 premiere was after Semin whacked J-M Liles.

"Well, he probably has sensitive skin, no?"

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

The fact that it's at night instead of during the day has actually put some interest into this game for me. Well, that and that it's not competing with Big Ten Bowl-a-palooza.

Re: Winter Classic- Sid the Kid being overexposed by Bettman

So CBC is showing Toronto - Ottawa. Anyone wanting to watch the Classic in Ontario can only get it online - or in a bar!
