Re: Winter Classic 2012: Rangers vs. Flyers
Still don't think it's right that an Original Six team is getting shafted.

In a perfect world we'd have Montreal @ Boston in the near future and Toronto @ Buffalo or NYR...But, unfortunately we don't and NBC probably won't be apt to put a Canadian team in.
Toronto v Minnesota would be an interesting in this case.If NBC did it right, they could put in a Canadian team, especially during an Olympic year. Market it as "the home of the game" versus the "innovators of the game" or something like that. Make it about Canada vs US.

Sez who? Innovations like putting teams in Sunbelt markets? And that glowing puck?
Seriously, it would be hard to promote it as US vs Canada when there are players from both and other countries scattered on teams on both sides of the border.
No history there. Minny and Winnipeg could work, but I think the Leafs and Detroit at Comerica would be a hit on both sides.
That sucked as an All-Star Game format and it would suck as a Winter Classic.Make it about Canada vs US.

I don't think so. (X arbitrarily chosen geographical area) vs. (Y arbitrarily chosen geographical area) doesn't have much cachet in the NHL; it's such a diverse league to start with. Maybe if all the players on the Red Wings were American and all the players on the Maple Leafs were Canadian then you could market "Canada vs. the USA!" but come on, half of those guys are Swedish anyway.Apples and oranges.
Take it easy, Francis. I was just spitballing.
They could find some angle. If they were mean, they could bring up the last time a Canadian team won a Cup. Leafs/Detroit would be a good one.

Watching coverage now that they have two hours of filler. I forgot that today it was supposed to be the first day of NBC Sports Channel. Put it on, still says Versus. What's up with that?
