Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Interesting. Women's programs are a boat anchor, aren't they? tOSU is hampered by lots of seats and too little fannies.

Yeah, woman's hockey is extremely difficult to make profitable. Explains why neither Michigan or Michigan State have woman's teams. These numbers explain (in my opinion) why the B1G schools were anxious to form the BTHC. The TV contract will bring a lot of much needed revenue to programs like OSU that is hemorrhaging money on their hockey programs right now.

Just so long as the popularity of the National Sport of Canada (read: it's NOT hockey) doesn't then force Johns Hopkins and Hobart to move to D-I, just like they did with Georgetown in squeakball.

Since 1994 it has been Hockey and Lax. Lax is the national summer sport, Hockey is the national winter sport. Lax was the one and only prior to 1994.

Nothing like seeing the writing on the wall. Talk about a buzz kill. Thanks for the exhilarating snow shower, though. Economic reality.
Seeing as though, under Title 9, adding a men's hockey program means a school would also have to add a woman's program (though doesn't have to be hockey), I don't think we'll see any other school add a program anytime soon, if ever. Considering only one of the six B1G schools (Minnesota) made money off their hockey programs last year (largely because of their nation's best TV contract), hockey isn't the easiest sport to turn a profit on.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Two factors:
(1) Until the other B1G schools see that ice hockey is a money maker, they'll stay out of it. A school needs a 5K capacity ice rink AND money for two programs (men and women).
(2) Unless E$PN and the BTN start generating (more) obscene cash flows for the B1G schools, they'll be stuck at 6 for the next 5+ years.

ND will join the B1G when the NBC contract stops paying off and there is a playoff system in the FBS schools.

Amazing how it is all tied to the money. And we thought it was education!
So if Notre Dame woods decide a play Beeg 10s football et basquetballs eet wood suddenly be a victory for ejacation? Huh?

No, Champaign doesn't have a hero with Pegula-sized pockets, but $15 million for a new arena is intriguing.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Bump.

These announcements seem to have been glossed over. Haven't seen a peep about it in the forum since the very recent groundbreaking announcements.

Original announcement (from 2007):

http://journalstar.com/news/local/article_a659dba3-86c1-50af-9c9c-ad8a14dcc175.html

Recent announcement (October):

Even more recent (November):

Now, I'm not saying at all that the University of Nebraska is going to take their club team and go D-1. Everybody seems to "know", somehow, that they can't, won't, couldn't, wouldn't, shouldn't etc., etc., etc.

However, for somebody that professes no interest in doing so, doesn't it strike everybody as a tad odd that that a brand new hockey-only facility is now going to be built on a quadrangle that includes Memorial Stadium, Haymarket Park, the currently under construction Pinnacle Bank Arena (which supposedly will have ice making capability good enough for ice shows, but, not for hockey), and now, this new hockey onlyfacility? Or the timing of all this?

I realize that the Husker club team plays in Fremont, NE, but..................

How hard would it be to enlarge this facility, one wonders? How convenient that it's being built with dual rinks so that a future choice between Olympic sized ice and NHL sized ice could hypothetically be made.

If the University of Nebraska is *not* interested in D-1 hockey why do things keep happening down in Lincoln that would seem to have the potential to be contradictory to that supposed stance, I wonder?

I don't care about the first link 4+ year old article saying there are no plans for NCAA hockey there. That was well before the Big 10 hockey conference came to be and before Nebraska joined the Big 10.

To me, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck................

"Yeah, we don't have any interest in D-1 hockey. Oh, these two facilities being built as we speak where it could be put if we did? Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Might have a point there. The michigan AD in a speech about a month ago said point blank that they were going to add lacrosse.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I hypothetically mentioned Nebraska on a different forum not too long ago and I just about got my nuts ripped off. Hmmmm:rolleyes:

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I was an UNO fan, I would be really worried that UNL would tell Trev Alberts to shut down the hockey team in Omaha as a "Cost Cutting Measure" so that the squad in Lincoln could scoop up the talent there.
