Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Which is why you took the time to read this, and then write a comment.

great comment from the troll who has most of his posts in his most hated team's thread...keep them coming happy!:p

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Many MANY moons until a current B1G school adds a shinny squad. However, I could see Notre Dame joining after their contact with NBC expires in 2015. The profitable B1G network will all of a sudden look very attractive. Another thing about ND is that beautiful rink they're building on campus will satisfy the B1G Syracuse is another. The B1G has had SU (among other schools) on its radar. SU just started a womens D1 program a year or two ago. Maybe converting the men's club team to D1 is in the future as well??

And where are they going to play? The SU men's team is not going to fit in Tennilly, and the War Memorial is used for the Crunch.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

This has been talked about for several years. But they cut a men's sport in order to bring women's hockey. They would probably look to have to cut more sports in order to do this. Tennity is a nice facility and again I have heard if they ever did add a men's team they would look to blow a wall and create the space necessary to add seating in it, or they would play their games at the War Memorial. It's a lot of what if's and it may be to many for men's hockey in the immediate future although it would certainly make sense to have syracuse go D1.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I believe that the league will work out a crafty way to add Notre Dame as an Associate member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference. Does the NBC contract only deal with Football or all sports? Also just heard that the city of Evaston is building a brand new ice rink so you could see D1 hockey at Northwestern real soon.

If they blow a wall in Tennilly, there will be absolutely no room for parking whatsoever. And good luck trying to schedule around the Crunch if they use the War Memorial. But hey, at least they're not going to pull a St. Lawrence Centre and try to build a rink within the expansion of the Carousel Mall.

If Northwestern can't fund a cross country team (coach, schollies, shoes, and a few tank tops and shorts), what are the chances that they will fund hockey?!

Yeah, I thought about that. Of the different schools the b1g 's been courting (i.e. Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers, Missou) Syr seemed to make the most sense to me. As far as an arena, I was thinking along the lines of what Michigan did. They converted Yost back in '73 from a b-ball/track/football training facility to a rink. Could Syracuse convert the 9,500 seat Manley (former b-ball home before they went to the Carrier Dome)? I'm purely speculating, and it would cost big bucks, but this type of thing's been done before.

Su going to the Big 10 is probably not likely in the next 10-20 years. The Big 10 is probably going to be happy at its current size. SU would only be willing to add that if their football revenue manages to skyrocket due to a combination of a new Big East football contract after the whole football members split thing shakes out.

When it comes to N'western, I was thinking it would have to be like Penn State. A wealthy alum stepping up to the plate. (Or face-off dot, as it were.) Chicago's interesting. They've got the Black Hawks and Wolves. They've got the Mission, C.Y.A, Fury, Team Illinois. USHL/NAHL teams. There's a base in Chi-town, for sure. Too bad Univ of Ill/Chicago flamed out (pun intended) years ago.:p

I think Mercyhurst is a lock for the 7th member of the Little Six

But I am not hypocritical about it. In fact I probably know more about the sue team's history than most sue fans, all the better to talk about fun stuff, like und's 6 chokes in a row at the FF.

They're not taking Notre Dame for hockey only while the Irish play everything else but football with the Big East.

And we should believe you know this despite not knowing that Notre Dame is a member of the Big East in everything but football and hockey...why?

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Texas.

Laugh if you want, but it's just as likely as anyone else. The current economic and political climates just won't allow it at a public school, unless there's a Terry Pegula knockoff waiting to pay for the whole thing. I'd never heard of Pegula before last August, so you never know I guess...

It took from 1997 (UNO) until 2010 (PSU) to see a new major-conference program. I'm not sure why so many think a bunch more are imminent.

While it may be tough for public schools in general alot of the major schools athletic departments have never been richer and are only going to get richer with new TV contracts. If one of the major schools has a decent club team and/or a couple of rich alumni and maybe a nearby rink available it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that they could start up a program. The recent national uptick in interest in hockey also helps.

Well, they're one of the few Bigtyme BCS schools that I could see the BTHC adding as an associate member for hockey. Again, even they would need a donor that can write ten figures checks to pull it off, but they would have enough pull to be an additional value to the BTHC. Maybe some of the PAC 12 schools as well perhaps. They probaly wouldn't mind adding adding an SEC school, but I could see college hockey as a whole to lean on them to not join the BTHC, but maybe the CCHA to hopefully help Huntsville out.

Either way though, there's no way Norte Dame comes in without bring in their football and other sports. Just too much bad blood between them for ND to get a sweetheart deal just for their hockey team.

Michigan goes D-1 in lacrosse. Is this the start of the Big Ten lacrosse conference. They have air time to fill.
