Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Ugh I hope not. What a terrible sport.
As currently practiced by a number of national power schools, absolutely! If you're talking about the way lax should be played with 20 total goals, then no.

I mean I don't find it to be in any way entertaining to watch. I'd rather watch paint dry or grass grow. Its the same way I feel about pro-basketball.

I agree with JF, lacrosse is a horrible sport. I hate it almost as much as soccer.

LAX reminds me more of basketball then any other sport.

So you think the Big Telve would have its name sullied by sponsoring lacrosse? Or that it would somehow force Minn. to start a team? or what?

I'm not a lax fan, either. I just don't see how not liking a sport equates to an opinion about others forming a conference in said sport...

It's working in Denver. Also in the great white north.

I'm sure Minnesota has a team. I'm not sure what your point is however. I just said I hope the B1G doesn't form a D1 conference for lacrosse.

Its the epitomy of an opinion. Take it or leave it. :)

For somebody who doesn't care about Lax or hates it sure has an opinion. Weird.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

While it may be tough for public schools in general alot of the major schools athletic departments have never been richer and are only going to get richer with new TV contracts. If one of the major schools has a decent club team and/or a couple of rich alumni and maybe a nearby rink available it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that they could start up a program. The recent national uptick in interest in hockey also helps.

I've never really been convinced of that, because as often as that idea's thrown around, there are still only something like 20 DI athletic departments out there not operating at a loss. Sports are getting cut a LOT more than they're getting added, and not just at the small-time schools (Cal baseball being one fairly recent example). Even at Penn State, one of the few schools running an entirely self-sufficient athletic department, our sports expenditures are coming under an increasing amount of scrutiny as Harrisburg continues to gash our appropriation ("You're making all this magic football money, why can't that go back into the English department?").

Like I said, there could be a really, really rich supporter of one of those schools out there, but absent that, I just don't see it in our immediate future.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Just so long as the popularity of the National Sport of Canada (read: it's NOT hockey) doesn't then force Johns Hopkins and Hobart to move to D-I, just like they did with Georgetown in squeakball.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Interesting to see people compare lacrosse to bouncyball. I never thought of it that way, but it really does make a lot of sense. The way players move in the offensive zone, the way defense is played. A lot less diving and (IMO) a lot more enjoyable to watch, though.

Back on topic: #7/8 won't happen until the economy improves (even then, you'll still probably need at least half of what Pegula did) and/or until Notre Dame loses its NBC contract and decides it needs a permanent home (which might not necessarily be the B1G Ten).

I do think that, for some B1G schools, the only expense that is a huge concern is the arena. These are schools with considerable means. Of the 20 or so D-I ADs actually making money, I think there are more schools from the B1G than any other conference. And there are very few conferences with an alumni base that can compare to the B1G Ten in terms of possibilities for donations. With that in mind, I don't think that the scholarships are a big deal. A drop in the bucket.

If any one of them gets access to a decent sized arena (6,000+ or so), I think they'll be able to make profit, or at worst keep any losses to a respectable minimum. This goes double if they can actually own their own ice instead of having to lease out.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Considering the number of players who play both lacrosse and hockey, I'm very surprised to see it dissed here. Both are niche sports very popular in Canada, and the indoor version is played in the same arenas with similar techniques and terminology. How odd.

Remember, Hobart punted D-I until a rich donor or two saved their playup status. When the money gets stupid, then the playups may be in jeopardy.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Seeing as though, under Title 9, adding a men's hockey program means a school would also have to add a woman's program (though doesn't have to be hockey), I don't think we'll see any other school add a program anytime soon, if ever. Considering only one of the six B1G schools (Minnesota) made money off their hockey programs last year (largely because of their nation's best TV contract), hockey isn't the easiest sport to turn a profit on.

Interesting. Women's programs are a boat anchor, aren't they? tOSU is hampered by lots of seats and too little fannies.
