Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

What amazes me is that these rumors (unfounded as they are currently) are coming from central Illinois. Not known to be hockey hotbeds (and completely opposite of the state from Peoria where the Rivermen have played for decades).

Really surprised that Bradley University (Peoria), Northern Illinois (DeKalb), and Northwestern (Chicago) have all been silent about any wishes of making the jump to Division 1. Especially NIU or Northwestern, both of which could ride the coattails of the Blackhawks and capitalize on their proximity to the Chicagoland region.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

If true, more competition down the line for uw's Chicago pipeline.

Stand down. It's just a new jersey for the ACHA club team.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I believe he was saying the B1G is only interested in schools with excellent academic credentials to play in a Big Ten conference sport. All of the current teams inluding John Hopkins in LAX are members of the Association of American Universities an elite group of the top research universities in the US and Canada. Had a Ferris State had the same LAX record as John Hopkins they would not have been allowed to join...while a fine university, it's not an elite research university. Academics always comes first with Big Ten memberhip.
I know it doesn't apply to LAX, but Nebraska lost its AAU membership about a week after it joined the Big 10...and it isn't like it was a secret. Just saying, some things are more important than academics...

Absolutely true! Like women's hoops!!!!!!!!!

Right butchie!? :D
Hehehe, good point, Nick. Especially a women's hoops program that makes more money than any men's hockey program. Laugh if you want to, but it is all about the $$$.

Any men's program but Minnesota. That program makes serious money on the level of men's hoops.

when admitted to the B1G Nebraska's strong academics were considered a prime reason. Yet conference mates Michigan and Wisconsin voted for expelling them from the AAU. Cornhuskers were expelled by 2 votes. Had the Badgers and Wolverines simply sat on their paws (abstained) UNL would still be a member.

Someone has to have standards.

I thought the big hairy fit the AAU had with Nebraska-Lincoln was because they don't have a Medical school in Lincoln, they ship their doctors to a satellite campus in Omaha, and that's why they got booted.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

The B1G is not done expanding. I wonder who they can add. Definitely won't be BC. :D Right, Nickie?!?

Big Ten expansion: It isn't done. That's about all I can say. Hint: The conference will begin negotiating on a new TV deal next year. The current contract expires in 2016. Definitely stay tuned.

I suppose. Now is the time for the B1G if it wants to get extra credit for new markets. After 2016, it'll be too late.

I'm sure that Hartford, CT market will be right at the top of the list of markets they want to penetrate too!

Too much agricultural research. Med school is in Omaha with separate admin.
Syracuse resigned from AAU at the same time rather than facing a similar fate as UNL.

Largest market without a professional sports franchise in the US, and has been so for quite awhile. UConn has decent penetration into NY (SNY holds their TV rights) and when it comes to M&W basketball they are New England's Team. No other team comes close.
