What College Hockey is to you.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

Clarkson still sucks! Sorry, had to throw an EZAC example in there. ;)

But heck, if we're only counting the Post-WWII era, even some D-III schools won national championships before the Goofers! I think one of them even beat the Goofers for it... :D
I think the point the OP was trying to make was that the University of Minnesota fueled the growth of hockey in Minnesota, and that the fruit of that growth has benefited other programs in college hockey. *

From the link the OP provided:

As admirable a player as he was, Mariucci's true calling was as a coach and nurturer of talent. He took over as coach of the University of Minnesota hockey team and immediately declined to recruit players from Canada. An important part of this emphasis on home grown talent was a challenge sent out by Mariucci to high schools throughout the state to start their own programs and develop interest in their respective communities. Between 1952 and 1980 the number of high school teams grew from a handful to more than 150.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

It's like basketball in Indiana. It's just so much more a part of everyday life, all the time, that for a lot of people there, there is no difference between the love of this cool thing you all share together and the big state school's team. You actually can't criticize the IU team to a person like that without (unknowingly) criticizing their whole way of life.

But we've all seen the letters to the editor when a Mr. Hockey goes to a school other than Minnesota. People take it personally. That's the part I don't get. It's provincial in the worst way; it's a really nasty way to treat some talented kid who wants to see some other part of the world for college; it just doesn't make sense. But you won't be able to separate that from the whole love for the place if you're talking to a die-hard local.

And that's the part of it that makes no sense. I'm a Badger fan. I get to hate the Gophers (and the Wolverines). I'm entitled to that. But that hate only goes as deep as the jersey itself. It has nothing at all to do with the state of Minnesota or the hockey players that the state turns out.

I'm also a Blackhawks fan and I'm liking Nick Leddy a whole lot. When the U.S. is in the WJC I don't root against the Gopher players, I root for the U.S. I was even pulling for Kessel to have a great tournament and then when he went back to the goofs, I pointed and laughed at him when they lost to Holy Cross. I was pulling for Juggs and Rau to have a great tourney this year.

It's called being a fan and having rivals. I don't take it personal that most other WCHA fans despise the Badgers.

I take pride in the fact that a majority of UMD's team are Minnesota born players. It was an awesome feeling to see Kyle Schmidt, Hermantown proud, score the game-winning goal for us. It's a pride that a lot of people just don't understand, because you don't have it.

Hey good for you. I've seen that this is a sentiment held by many others in your state, so you're not alone. I don't have a problem with that sentiment.

I just don't share it. The issue comes in when someone tries to tell others that they must also value this as you do.

Jack Skille scored the triple overtime goal that sent us to the Frozen Four in 06. Jack is from the Madison area and I got to watch him play high school hockey before he left for NTDP.

It made no difference whatsoever to me that he was the one to score that goal. The victory was not better because of it. The fact that a Badger scored the goal and that we were going to the Frozen Four was all I cared about. I mean, great for Jack, but greater for the Badgers.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

Ok, let's recap here, people.

MINNESOTA is a state.

The UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA is a system of campuses.

The UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, TWIN CITIES has a hockey team that sucks cock.

Well said. Also, I was unaware that we could now say cock, but not *****.

LOL. See you in a week or so.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

You are more than welcome to feel that way, I just do not.

College hockey to me is more than just an entertainment factor. It's allowed me to meet some very special people, made some good friends, and allowed me to increase my overall spirit towards my school. If we win, or we lose, it affects me personally. If you don't feel that way, so be it, but I do.

I take pride in the fact that a majority of UMD's team are Minnesota born players. It was an awesome feeling to see Kyle Schmidt, Hermantown proud, score the game-winning goal for us. It's a pride that a lot of people just don't understand, because you don't have it. Now, where your players come from really has no bearing on college hockey, and I believe the Gophers are as arrogant as anybody else does, but I was just pointing out the fact that JDUBBS argument wasn't trying to say the only people that need to be in college hockey are from the state of Minnesota, just that he gets annoyed by all the negative comments towards the state when we produce a lot of players the people making the comments cheer for. Now, if he was saying the Gophers specifically, and not the state as a whole, I would definitely have a different opinion on it, but from what I got out of it, he meant the entire state.

So you take it personally when the team wins and loses? Really? You need hockey to have pride in your school? Must be tough to be proud during lean years, then. You need Minnie players to be extra proud?

The problem with taking it personally is it's easy to get out of hand. Would you physically fight someone over hockey? Would you pay under the table to get better players from your state to fuel your pride? Can be a very dangerous game.

I've met great people, too, even ones from this board who are complete rivals to UM, and hate us with a passion. Big deal. Good people, like them, but hockey is still entertainment, whether you like it or not. Unless YOU are the one playing. Which I know you are not.

Still, if you can't handle the fact that virtually everyone in this country who are hockey fans don't like your team, well, tough. I don't feel sorry for you at all. This is JUST A GAME. You don't get a raise when you win, you don't lose knookie when you lose. Well, I suppose if you take it personally enough, you may be the one. Your dog won't care if the team wins or loses, unless you beat the dog.

I just don't get how ANYONE can take a game so seriously.

This summer MEg and I went to see Tim Allen at Treasure Island. He had a joke about this (which is not as funny when written out, obviously). "You can say 'caulk caulk caulk' all day long... as long as you're talking about the stuff you use around the bathtub."

That being said, if vagina is uncensored, so should be p.enis. Sexism!

Really, if they ban me for saying a word they have not censored, that's just ricockulous.

I believe THE University of Minnesota (that's what we call it) is an independent nation within Minnesota, kinda like the Vatican. We're that important ;)

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

While yes, I think he definitely worded it incorrectly, I think people aren't really getting the point of JDUBBS argument here. He's not saying, "The only people in college hockey should be Minnesotans, and everyone one else shouldn't try." He's saying, "Why is it that people sit on this forum and bash on Minnesota and the Gophers, but then take all the credit in the world when a Minnesota born player does something well for their team?" It's more of a hypocritical aspect. You shouldn't really bash on the state that gave you plenty of the players who've carried your team. Everybody out there is entitled to play the sport, regardless of where you are from, but don't bite the hand that tends to, but doesn't always, feed you.

Thank you State of Minnesota for: Tyler Barnes, Jason Clark, Patrick Daly, Joe Faust, Joseph LaBate, Tyler Lapic, Jake Gardiner, Ryan McDonagh, Matt Hussey, Dan Boeser, Matt Doman, Tom Gilbert, Nick Licari, Ross Carlson, Tom Gorowsky, Jamie McBain, Derek Stepan, Mike & Mark Strobel, Jason Francisco, Chris Tucker,Kelly Fairchild, among many, many others!

The Gophers still suck!

And as I said earlier, that is you. It's fine if it's just a game to you. It's fine if you consider it just entertainment. But, I've never understood your argument of "it's just a game". Who's it just a game to? You? To me, it's a little more than that. I've been playing hockey since I was 4 years old. I grew up on the sport, lived across the street from a rink and played constantly. Am I very good? Debatable. But, it's more than a sport, it's become almost a way of life. And because of that reason, and the fact that my mom had attended UMD, I chose the school as well. If it didn't have a D-1 hockey team, for the most part I didn't even send in an application. It was that big of a deal to me. So, I can honestly say I PERSONALLY am emotional attached to a team. Win or lose we booze is the motto here, but sometimes when we lose, I just go home and take a night off.

You don't have to feel the same way, that's fine. But be a little more open minded to the idea that someone else maybe does.

Ahh, that makes more sense. School and work doesn't really allow me to read all the threads on this site.

That's interesting. My desire to retain a shred of sanity is what prevents me from reading all the threads.

This one was titled interestingly enough to open and the tone of the initial post made it an instant /popcorn thread,

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

The first time I took my Canadian mother to a CC game she looked at me in shock before the opening faceoff and asked why they didn't play Oh Canada prior to the game. Ok... I made that up... she didn't seem to notice... but... no joke... I think they should. It's a cute little anthem.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

ronmexico gave me an idea. In addition to schools being required to have no more than 3 Non-Minnesotans aka Canadians, the Star Spangled Banner should be replaced with this:

The North Stars never would have done anything THAT pansy-arsed. I suppose that Dubber's eyes well up when he sees/hears that.

Absolutely weak sauce, just like everything about the Wild. Seriously, that couldn't be any worse.

Hilarious!
