What College Hockey is to you.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

OK, so a two-time ECAC Player of the Year came from Edina. Not all Minnesota players are boons to a team, though. Sometimes arrogance can be taken too far, and can result in arguments like this. Sure, a lot of good hockey players are from Minnesota, but there are a number of great USA players from other states, like Michigan, Massachusetts, New York, and several other locations.

And I don't think anyone is arguing that. But, I'm not going to sit here and make fun of Canada while being a fan of UMD. Why? Because we've received a lot of players from Canada that have produced hugely for us. In our first exhibition game of the year, we play some Canadian university team, and our student section chants "USA USA" or "Canada sucks!", which really makes absolutely no sense at all. You shouldn't hold a hatred for a place that has done nothing but good for the sport you love. And that isn't arrogance, and no, I'm not a Gopher fan. That's just the fact of the matter. Minnesota has and will continue to produce good hockey players that will play all over the country. It's one of our main claims to fame, and we're proud of that fact.

While yes, I think he definitely worded it incorrectly, I think people aren't really getting the point of JDUBBS argument here. He's not saying, "The only people in college hockey should be Minnesotans, and everyone one else shouldn't try." He's saying, "Why is it that people sit on this forum and bash on Minnesota and the Gophers, but then take all the credit in the world when a Minnesota born player does something well for their team?" It's more of a hypocritical aspect. You shouldn't really bash on the state that gave you plenty of the players who've carried your team. Everybody out there is entitled to play the sport, regardless of where you are from, but don't bite the hand that tends to, but doesn't always, feed you.

So, because some of our players come from the STATE of Minnesota, we can't bash the UNIVERSITY of Minnesota or their often times silly fans?

I believe that we may be onto the crux of the issue at hand. Some posters take any and all criticism/ribbing of Gopher hockey and Gopher fans as a criticism of hockey in Minnesota. They are very separate entities.

The attitude, perpetuated and believed in most vociferously by some Gopher fans, that we should all bow down to the throne of Goldy and Herbie because the STATE of Minnesota turns out a lot of talent is precisely what makes many despise the Gopher program and the attitudes of these fans. That's what causes the constant bashing of the Gophers and has nothing at all to do with youth hockey, high school hockey or any other hockey in the state of Minnesota - which I can only speak for myself, but I respect the hell out of.

In addition, I'm not going to thank the Gophers, the State of Minnesota or even Dubber for Tom Gilbert coming to Wisconsin and being a part of our most recent title team. I'm going to thank Tom and also our coaching staff as he was not real good when he first got here...

I heard the exact same thing (obviously with the roles reversed) when watching an Ottawa/Buffalo game in Ottawa a year or two back. Yet, where does Coach Lindy Ruff come from? There's plenty of Canadians on Buffalo's team, as well.

Plus, I don't think it's holding hatred of a place, it's holding hatred of a team, and especially during the course of the game. Case and point, RPI fans cheering Jerry D'Amigo (on the other team) during player introductions, but booing him during the shootout, and then chants of "USA! USA!" during the handshakes.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

I made a point on Twitter early this week that is unrelated to this thread, but parallels it in some fashion. I recently had a discussion with someone at USA Hockey who told me (upon learning that I was a Gopher fan) that he can't stand the Gophers because of the arrogance surrounding the old recruitment philosophy of only taking in-state players. Then, later in our discussion, proceeded to talk about how much he hates it when US kids pick the CHL over college hockey. I found that ironic because the "Minnesota way" as some here are labeling it, has always kept more kids playing in college hockey than the "USA Hockey's way".

There is a fine line between pride and arrogance, and while I do think some Gopher fans cross that line and deserve some of the criticism they get, I also believe there is a lot of unwarranted criticism and envy out there as well.

Exactly. Very well said.

Oh bs.

Everyone knows WI is brimming with arrogance! I don't know a single Packer fan that wont recite the entire history of the Packers, yes this is a hockey forumn, but dont try and act like if it was reversed and UW was the reason hockey is what it is today in MN-WI-ND etc your fanbase wouldn't be the exact same way.

And i'm not sure you even qualify for this discussion, 2 months ago you had no clue who John Mariucci even was. your words "i don't care about the hostory of the sport", yet we both know **** well that you would if it were reversed.

And yes its extremely hypocritical of a "Badger" Bob fan to incessantly talk sh1t about a program where he hailed from. I dont think its even possible for you to understand that. He put your program on the map.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

I heard the whole thing was Ben Affleck doing a terrible interpretation of what acting is supposed to be.

You forget Josh Hartnett (sp?- wait, who the hell cares) and Kate Becksinale doing their best to torpedo (no pun intended) a potentially great movie.

Speaking of Josh Hartnett, he is from Minnesota. I propose that all actors must be from the state of Minnesota.

They should come out with a reality show that entices the entire country to turn into Minnesota.

Again, Badger Bob and what he did here is a separate issue from the Gophers and we don't need to thank the Gophers, the State of Minnesota or you for what Badger Bob did. We need to, and do, thank Badger Bob himself. Or at least we respect his legacy considering that we cannot actually thank him in person.

And please, go dig up my posts where i didn't know who John Mariucci is/was? I'll be waiting.

On a side note, Maruicci (the poster, not John himself, although...) is probably reading this thread and just dying that he can't jump in and call me "chippie." Tee hee! Thanks Chuck! :D

This is a great idea. JDubbs and "The mariucci" can be the stars. What to call it though? Minnesota Bore?

You're completely missing the point. All actors don't have to be from the state of Minnesota, we just need to publicly thank the state of Minnesota, the Golden Gophers and certain Gopher fans for Josh Hartnett.

What was he in?

Well this is a little silly. Plenty of other schools were winning NCAA titles before the quality of hockey in the state of Minnesota was raised by the U (and I do agree that it was). By the time Minnesota won its first title, 11 other schools had already won titles. If the U had never raised the quality of hockey in Minnesota, plenty of other schools would *still* be winning NCAA titles without any Minnesotans on their rosters, and their fans would be just as happy as they are now. The presence or lack thereof of Minnesota players has nothing to do with it.

Wait, we are not supposed to bash the Goofers? Seriously?

As a fellow member of the axis of evil, grow some skin.

People LOATHE Michigan. Celebrate when we loose as much or more than when they win. Big deal.

BC fans seem to be able to take it, too.

I have no idea where our players are from, and frankly, don't care what so ever. It's entertaining to me, and abuse that is thrown toward UM doesn't change me personally, if they win an NC or don't make the tournament- I personally don't change- I just lose some entertainment.

Another way of putting it- if you can't handle the fact that people hurl abuse toward St. Paul on this board, maybe you should find a different place.

This is true. Every time I even see those football helmets I get extremely violent urges.

Clarkson still sucks! Sorry, had to throw an EZAC example in there. ;)

But heck, if we're only counting the Post-WWII era, even some D-III schools won national championships before the Goofers! I think one of them even beat the Goofers for it... :D

You are more than welcome to feel that way, I just do not.

College hockey to me is more than just an entertainment factor. It's allowed me to meet some very special people, made some good friends, and allowed me to increase my overall spirit towards my school. If we win, or we lose, it affects me personally. If you don't feel that way, so be it, but I do.

I take pride in the fact that a majority of UMD's team are Minnesota born players. It was an awesome feeling to see Kyle Schmidt, Hermantown proud, score the game-winning goal for us. It's a pride that a lot of people just don't understand, because you don't have it. Now, where your players come from really has no bearing on college hockey, and I believe the Gophers are as arrogant as anybody else does, but I was just pointing out the fact that JDUBBS argument wasn't trying to say the only people that need to be in college hockey are from the state of Minnesota, just that he gets annoyed by all the negative comments towards the state when we produce a lot of players the people making the comments cheer for. Now, if he was saying the Gophers specifically, and not the state as a whole, I would definitely have a different opinion on it, but from what I got out of it, he meant the entire state.

It's like basketball in Indiana. It's just so much more a part of everyday life, all the time, that for a lot of people there, there is no difference between the love of this cool thing you all share together and the big state school's team. You actually can't criticize the IU team to a person like that without (unknowingly) criticizing their whole way of life.

I mean, God forbid the Mr. Basketball winner choose to go to a school other than IU. People get ticked. They take it personally.

Now, I love being from Indiana; I love that we had a hoop in our driveway; I love that my college friends from the East Coast would visit and say, "Wow, it's just like people say!", and, "Every house has a basketball net!"; I love that my high school had a total student body of 1,000 and our gym seated 6,000. But I never got why people got so mad when a local kid chose to go out of state, or any of that other stuff.

Now that I'm in Minnesota, I see the same thing with hockey. I love heading over to the neighborhood park with my family to go skating -- any night of the week it's packed with kids and with families. I love coaching my 8-yr-old's Mite team. That's all part of something really cool, and I'm very happy to be raising my family in it. But we've all seen the letters to the editor when a Mr. Hockey goes to a school other than Minnesota. People take it personally. That's the part I don't get. It's provincial in the worst way; it's a really nasty way to treat some talented kid who wants to see some other part of the world for college; it just doesn't make sense. But you won't be able to separate that from the whole love for the place if you're talking to a die-hard local.
