What College Hockey is to you.

No my point is this.

Both fanbases have ALOT to say about the Gopher program, and most flat out deny the fact the same program they love to take shots at supplied them with alot, wether directly or indirectly. Gurt loves to do this in threads, when a Gopher fan replies it becomes a bother in said thread, so here we go.

And everyone who watched NHL has something to say about the Southern Markets, force feeding hockey or the lack of US players. Outside MN, MA and MI very few States programs support the growth of US Hockey.

For instance, UND currently has 11 Canadians on their roster, and anyone who believes those Canadians are there for the education is fooling themselves and should refrain from trying to sell that load of bs. Where is the line drawn, and how does having 11 Canadians on the roster considered College Hockey? 20 Russians, forget about the growth of the sport in the US? UND is popular enough to go all US Born, or atleast the majority.

Shwartz is a MN resident who is anti-minnesotan with everything, all sports included, the only time he's not anti minnesotan is when it benifits his Badgers, Gurt is right there with him, minus living in MN. So I find it peculiar that it can be so convenient. Such as that fanbase very quickly renaming former Gopher Bob Johnson to "Badger" Bob and STILL chirp about the Gopher program at every opportunity. See the obvious?

It's obvious to me your carrying a torch for Mariucci in his...ummm....absence.

Gotta admit I took some perverse glee in yesterday's meltdown. But enough is enough. You and Mariucci sound like a Gopher version of Carl Gerbschmidt. And a tag team version at that.

Do us all a favor. Especially your Gopher brethren:

Take a break.

MuRPI when the day comes that I need to be lectured about anything by a Miami fan, I'll let you know. And my condescending nature has nothing to do with my connection to Notre Dame. It's because I am a freeking bad arse all on my own. My problem with JDUBBS that lead to my very sarcastic post (not unlike what I am sure will be dozens of others by the time THIS thread dies out) is not his affection for Minnesota, or its flagship state university. I too have a great deal of affection for my home state. I fly my Michigan flag right along with my Marine Corps flag and with my US flag every day. I'm usually one of the first to jump in and offer a defense of Detroit every time one of the threads goes off the rails with nothing but incessant attacks on the city as any kind of a destination. It just seems like every single thread he participates in turns into the same tired thing. Minnesota is the be all and end all of college hockey. And you know what? There's a lot of truth to that. Minnesotans SHOULD be proud of what that state means to the sport throughout the NCAA. But come on, every last goddam thread he posts in doesn't need to be an argument about the same thing.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

Silly me. I thought a University would in some measure take its character from the meaning of the word "universal," which has been defined as "of, pertaining to, extending to, or affecting the entire world or all withing the world; worldwide." Maybe they should just change the name from the University of Minnesota to the Cloister of Minnesota, where people are protected from the sins of diversity and change are are free to worship without persecution at the alter of John, the Patron Saint of Hockey as it Should Be Played in Minnesota by Minnesotans. Every generation or so, they can just bring in some new bodies from Tennessee, Oregon, or some other nonCanadian place to keep the gene pool just clean enough so that the hockey players will still have big forearms and long reaches without that telltale hair on the soles of their feet.

Unfortunately, I have to go run a practice for my son's bantam team and will miss this developing in real time. Don't know why I bother as they're just Wisconsin-born vermin and not of the super race.

Over/Under on pages by the time I get home around 10pm?

Will the thread be locked? I hope it's not deleted.

What about an RPI fan? Nonetheless I shall wait anxiously for that day.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

I think every college should be required to use near exclusively Minnesotans. Wisconsin, North Dakota, St. Cloud State, Michigan, Ferris St., Boston College, New Hampshire, Cornell, etc. Every team, same deal. Near exclusively Minnesotans. Each school however is allowed to use one player from the state the school is located in and two other players from outside the state that are not Minnesotans. These players whether they be from Massachusetts, Florida, Manitoba or Russia shall be considered Canadians and it will be expected that the team's media guide, website and game programs reflect such. So for instance Brad Eidsness of North Dakota is from Chestermere, Alberta, Canada and Austin Smith of Colgate is from Dallas, Texas, Canada.
I think that you got that wrong. You are thinking of Dallas Smith. Austin Smith is from Austin. :p

I can understand your view, but its really not that. I have no illusions thinking MN is better than ANY program, never have I thought that. The reason I post anything about hockey in general is out of the pride I have for the program. I to fly my flags, including the branch I was in, the State where I live, and the Country I served. I'm a very prideful person, to a fault sometimes, for that im guilty.

The main reason for this post is because every single time we/I/Gopher fans have a discussion in any thread on this USCHO forumn it almost always turns into an anti-Gopher lambasting from the same few people, the minute I or someone else has something to say about it, I/we are viewed as the arrogant Gopher fan. Here it can be a gloves off debate without interupting a thread.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

No one is going to bow down to the University of Minnesota or the state of Minnesota.

North Dakota and Wisconsin aren't going to recruit kids specifically from their state if there are better players in Minnesota. If you really love college hockey so much you would want the best players playing, regardless of where they come from. You will have to hold the best hockey state tournament in your imagination.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

I repped this to JDUBBS, but I'll expand on it here.

USA Hockey is great. It really has expanded the number of Americans in the college, minor, and major leagues, not to mention grown the sport by leaps and bounds in this country. However, a huge number of foreign-born players take part in American college hockey, mainly from Canada but also from all over the place. Recruiting primarily or only Americans will do two things:

-Reduce the quality of player in the leagues.
-Contribute to the spread of major junior hockey in this country, making men's D-1 even more irrelevant and likely to contract.

Even with his annoyance with Canadian players taking prime spots in the WCHA and other leagues, Mariucci (and Herb Brooks after him) would recognize that Canadian players in the US leagues raise the level of competition higher. That benefits the entire collegiate sport - D-1 leagues get more players and can expand to new schools, D-3 leagues get better players (the ones who miss D-1) and can also expand.

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

It's really a wonderful game. A beautiful pass or hipcheck is a delight to watch, whether it is executed by a kid from Owatonna, or Weyburn, or Graz. We all have affiliations, and we have fun with them at each others' expense, but when we start fixating on how our friends or our town or our school or our state or our country plays the game, I think we risk serving our own sense of pride at the expense of our love of the game. All the hate talk is great fun as long as we understand the absurdity of it.

Although the college game is great, hockey might be at its most sublime when it's played by 4 and 5-year olds, who herd after the puck like puppies after a ball and who have to be physically placed at the faceoff circle like pieces on a chessboard.

Except in Minnesota, of course, where they already play a pretty good neutral zone trap.

How's that for a bunch of righteous BS?

I call shenanigans. Everyone knows UAA employs the trap, not mites in Minnesota. :p

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

Minnesotans are the only place that hockey players come from right?

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

If Minnesota hockey players are soooooo good, then they should have the balls to come to American International and turn the program around. Any good player can go to a good school and be average, but great players can go into a tough situation and turn things around.

If anyone here has been to Springfield AND TC (as I have), they'd laugh at the similarities. :D

Re: What College Hockey is to you.

I like our hockey but it's not the center of the universe my wife is, my dog is sleeping right now, I have a slight stomach ache probably left over after a weekend drinking on Mille Lacs, peanut butter and jelly on white with fritos and milk is my favorite kid snack, the Fulton Blonde is just ok and this thread sucks.

JDDUBBS, with all due respect for the love of Parise please give the provincialism a rest?
