What are people doing Friday?

Re: What are people doing Friday?

Slasher, what hotel are you staying at?

We're staying out of town near the airport. I forget the name. Ramada Inn in Taylor near a hooters? We rented a car because we didn't want to spend the money to stay in the city.

Speaking of bars, will Hockey Town be serving beer at 10am on that Friday or do they make you wait until noon?

Re: What are people doing Friday?

Detroit Institute of Art is awesome so I'm planning to spend a few hours there. The Science Museum is also fun.

We'll probably do the DIA, too. Haven't been there for a while, and we are members.

Don't forget the Henry Ford out in Dearborn.

Can't sell until noon on Sunday's only.

At 10:00am, there will most likely be a line to get in the place.

If you have never experienced a Tigers Opening Day in Detroit, you are in for one heck of a good time.

Weather will make a difference obviously, but it still will be quite crazy...

Ive been to Opening Day at Fenway and Wrigley, so I hope the experience is close to that. I'm sure we'll be in town as early as needed to get into HockeYTown. We'll probalbly see about scoring some standing room/scalper tickets after the game starts, if not I'll be at the bar watching on TV.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

I got four tickets fir the tigers opener when they went on sale a couple Saturdays ago... So that's an option. I am of course still awaiting an Oakland Hills member to invite me out-- so everything else is on holding depending on that. :p

For those making the trip and staying the duration...what are your plans?

Re: What are people doing Friday?

My wife, daughter and I plan to head into Windsor to poke around for the day. Looks like Windsor has a nice park and some sights to see, plus they've never been out of the country before and my wife wants to see some of Canada. On Saturday, we are going to the Tigers game in the afternoon before going to the National Championship game. We wanted to make it a full weekend.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

I've been to 4 opening day's in different cities. Detroit's is legendary! It's about the only good thing left about the city.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

gotta love the skills competition with only 6 of the original mens players selected participating.

east:
Sean Backman, Yale - signed with dallas
Bobby Butler, New Hampshire - signed with ottawa
Owen Meyer, Army
Neil Musselwhite, Oswego State

Ben Smith, Boston College - i assume was replaced with bc making the frozen four
Brandon Wong, Quinnipiac - signed with grand rapids (ahl)
Jared DeMichiel, RIT - i assume was replaced with bc making the frozen four
Ben Scrivens, Cornell

west:
Cody Chupp, Ferris State - signed with texas (ahl)
Zach Harrison, Minnesota State Mankato
Steven Kampfer, Michigan - signed with boston
Kyle Lawson, Notre Dame - signed with carolina
Tony Lucia, Minnesota - signed with san jose
Chris McKelvie, Bemidji State - signed with hartford (ahl)
Brian Stewart, Northern Michigan
Andrew Volkening, Air Force

should be interesting to see who the replacements are... that said, if musselwhite doesn't win the fastest skater competition i will be stunned... kid can flat out fly...

Re: What are people doing Friday?

Getting drunk with some friends. One of my buddies got a new job and just bought a house, should be fun.

OH! For the Frozen Four. I am not going. I was, but money has become an issue. Plus, I have many things coming up this summer that will require me to take time off, so I figured I will take any and all hours I can get up until that point.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

I will be at work in Boston on Friday :(

Re: What are people doing Friday?

I'd recommend going to that, BCMike. It was a good time in Denver. Also, one of BC's all-time greatest women's players will be participating, in Allie Thunstrom. One of the fastest skaters you'll ever see.

Never seen her play, so I can't really compare, but have you seen Oswego's Neil Musselwhite, who will also be there? Fastest player I have EVER seen.

Video from his freshman season. (He's gotten MUCH faster since)

Re: What are people doing Friday?

It will be a different F4 this time with the kiddies in tow. Years past, it was pretty easy, how hungover would we be? Assuming not to hungover to eat, when would we get everyone out of bed for lunch and then where would be the first place to drink?

If the weather is decent, we'll probably do the zoo. If not, the mall in Auburn Hills... something (Great Lakes?) Crossing. Might end up at the skills competions for the evening.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

It's the Tigers' home opener right?

Might go to the game if scalpers aren't too crazy. Might go to Canada . . . I dunno . . . just because it's there.
I have literally the exact same plan.

I'm also thinking of heading to the casino at some point.

Wow, yeah, seriously

Re: What are people doing Friday?

I tried for 90 minutes to get Tigers opening day tickets when they went on sale, but had no luck. So we might try and get some on the street, or just find something else to do. Hockeytown is definitely on the schedule at some point. If we can get in, that is.

Otherwise it looks like the Hobey presentation and skills competition on Friday night, with maybe the Tigers game on Saturday before the real game Saturday night.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

The Hockeytown atmosphere is nice, but the food is highly overrated. Cheli's Chili might be a better bet there.

The Elwood, between Ford Field and Comerica Park (behind left field), is better IMO, but much smaller and much more noisy.

And if you want to make the trip up Michigan Ave, there's always Nemo's. It's a block from what was Tiger Stadium. That place is going to be packed for Opening Day, but the burgers are absolutely top-notch. They also run shuttles back and forth to Comerica, for those of you that have tickets.

No one has been able to explain to me why Hockeytown was closed after the hockey game when I was there for GLI....

As for things to do in Detroit, try featherbowling. We did it GLI this season. You'll have to google it or something. ;)

I'd like to go to the Tigers game (buddy of mine who will hopefully be coming with me from tATL is a big Tigers fan), but I understand they sell out pretty quick and I'm not looking to get bent over for a Tigers ticket from scalpers.

What other good things around D-Town are people planning on doing?

As others have pointed out, Friday is the Tigers home opener, so tickets are hard to come by (and more expensive). Our group opted to get Tigers tickets for Saturday's matinee game. Still plenty of seats left for that game.

For those of you who are automotive and/or auto racing fans, the Detroit Public Library is supposed to have a fantastic collection of materials on those subjects. I hope to be able to drop in sometime during the weekend.

Me personally, I'll probably be spending most of Friday visiting my brother and his family out in Livonia.
