What are people doing Friday?

Re: What are people doing Friday?

No one has been able to explain to me why Hockeytown was closed after the hockey game when I was there for GLI....

As for things to do in Detroit, try featherbowling. We did it GLI this season. You'll have to google it or something. ;)

Because the GLI was during the week and you would have a hard time making money staying open late. The crowd at the GLI this year was more concerned about getting home and rested before work the next day than they were about going out for fun.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

The Hockeytown atmosphere is nice, but the food is highly overrated. Cheli's Chili might be a better bet there.

The Elwood, between Ford Field and Comerica Park (behind left field), is better IMO, but much smaller and much more noisy.

And if you want to make the trip up Michigan Ave, there's always Nemo's. It's a block from what was Tiger Stadium. That place is going to be packed for Opening Day, but the burgers are absolutely top-notch. They also run shuttles back and forth to Comerica, for those of you that have tickets.

Hockeytown's food is only average, but their pizza is amazing (not suprisingly). And before anyone asks...no it's not $5.

Where I come from, bars don't close at 9:00, even if it is a week night.

This is the 3rd rec I've had for Nemo's. I'll put it on my must list.

I'm considering going to U of M while I'm up there on Friday. I've always wanted to see the Big House and it looks like only a 45 min drive.

Where you come from there is probably a population base. Downtown Detroit has 80,000 people that come in for work each day but only about 8,000 full time residents.

Just don't worry about it...the places will be open until 2AM next week.

I'm not saying this because i'm a Spartan...I'm saying this as a sports fan. It's a cool building because it's the biggest in college football, but it really is just a giant hole in the ground. You would be better served going to a local quarry or gravel pit and looking into it for a while. If you are going to go to Ann Arbor though, make use of their awesome museums and galleries. It is an awesome city.

Yeah you aren't saying this just because you're a Spartan at all.

Now that's just ig'nant.

I'm not from MSU and I agree with him. It would be fun to see with 110,000 people there, but when it is empty it is just a hole in the ground. From outside the stadium you'd hardly know what you're looking at, as it doesn't even look very big, since it is actually a hole in the ground, so most of the stadium can't bee seen from normal ground level.

Honestly, I have don't have bad feelings towards the stadium itself. I just don't think there is much to see there besides a hole with seats. The same would go for stadiums I adore...it's not like Maple Leaf Gardens or the Forum which had famous concourses and accessible press boxes.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

The Yale Bowl is a big hole in the ground, but it's still awesome. It's also half the size.

The whole point, I think, is that it's cool to see a stadium that you've never seen before.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

As others have pointed out, Friday is the Tigers home opener, so tickets are hard to come by (and more expensive).

Yes the home opener is sold out, however there may be one last thing you can do to buy a face value ticket at the box office. This worked for us a few years ago before we started buying the package which includes opening day.

The day before the game, we called the box office and asked if any additional tickets were made available. To our surprise, they said yes and we ended up sitting in the upper deck right field handicapped accessible seating area.

Comerica has lots of these areas along to front rows of the upper deck and some in the lower deck along the concourse area.

My wife and I sat in regular seats, but we had a big space between the next group of seats, presumably for wheel chairs, of which their were none in site...

Think about it, it's a mad house on opening day with more people on the outside partying than there are on the inside, so only the very die hard fans that are handicapped may venture out for the game. Plus the weather is always iffy for opening day. When Comerica opened in 2000, we sat through a very cold and snowy day, and that was on April 11th!... Today in Detroit it will hit 80!

Give it a shot... Call maybe two days before, and then again the day before depending on what they say.

The box office # is 1.313.471.BALL

I think they open at 10:00am on non-game days.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

Most stadiums have some more tickets made available a couple days to a week before the game because of returned player comp seats and stuff like that.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

Not sure what I'm doing on Friday yet, but for anyone bringing their wife who is interested in shopping, especially if the weather is bad, the Somerset Collection Mall is very nice. It's located about a mile west of I-75 on Big Beaver Road in Troy.

Excellent point...

Here are a list of the big malls and the nearby hotel towns that they are near. There are some smaller shopping centers, but they are pretty bland...oh wait, all malls are. but anyway, here ya go.

Malls:
Farmington Hills/Novi/Livonia - 12 Oaks Mall, Novi
Royal Oak/Troy - Somerset Collection, Troy
Auburn Hills/Pontiac - Great Lakes Crossings, Auburn Hills
Roseville/Warren/Sterling Heights - Lakeside Mall, Sterling Heights

Re: What are people doing Friday?

No one is biting on the featherbowling?

I'm serious, it was pretty sweet, and only about a 10 minute drive from downtown. Here, I'll even to the googling for you guys! :p

http://www.cadieuxcafe.com/featherbowling/

We will be downtown at the game Friday and partying afterwards, and driving is no where in our future when we park Thursday afternoon at the Greektown Casino hotel, until we leave Sunday. Maybe a cab though!

Featherbowling is a blast, and yes, a bigger blast with a few beers.

Check out this short video I found on the Cadieux Cafe and it shows Featherbowling for those who have never seen it before.

Word of advise if you are seriously thinking of doing this.... call for a reservation. They only have two lanes and they fill up fast.

Canada reminder

I'm sure you all know this already, but just in case: you'll need a US Passport to get into Canada and back into the US again.

Have fun! Wish I could be there. Someday for the Brown Bears, maybe. Hey, I can dream.

Re: What are people doing Friday?

Drinking. Maybe at the Tigers game if we can find tickets at a reasonable cost, elsewhere if not, but one way or another, drinking.

i can assure you that the big house is a sight to see with 110k people... i was at the michigan-notre dame game in sept 2007 and the atmosphere in michigan stadium was AMAZING... also, in addition to recommending you go to a game there, park on one of the 2 golf courses across the street cuz the tailgating is solid.

.....whether you're a michigan fan or not it's a very worthwhile experience
