WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

I love this line from Arlen's articular on Bermidji,
Opposing players are even learning how to say the name correctly.

It is hilarious given that the Bermidji PA announcer can't get players names right even when he is given a pronunciation guide.

Re: WCHA Thread V

at Ridder, how would you ever know if the PA mispronounces somebody's name?

note to whomever is in charge: check out the speaker placement/arrangement
if I can hear somebody yell from across the ice, or hear a player yell to their team mate, but can't hear what comes out of the speaker ...

Yes it can be difficult to make it out over such a loud, cheering crowd...

The PA system at Ridder definitely could use some "refinement".

Re: WCHA Thread V

For lack of a better thread to post this, Molly Illikainen has had the hot hand for St. Cloud State with 8G and 5A during the Huskies' 6-game winning streak.

Katie Fitzgerald named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week as well.

Gophers Dani Cameranesi and Sarah Potomak took home the Offensive and Rookie awards this week.

That is a difference, Sanford is quiet, Ridder is not. Sanford is home to second tier country acts & and 1980's rock groups, Ridder hosts a hockey team. The sound requirements are different and Rick does just fine with names.

UMD's Big Guns Make The Big Plays
Tonight's difference-makers can be found at the top of the UMD depth chart. Both rosters played very well. But in the end, a tight game was settled on a 3rd Period scoring play engineered by three of UMD's brightest stars.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Minnesota-Duluth Honorable Mention: Lara Stalder
Four point night, all assists. Secondary assist on the GWG.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Melani Moylan
Melani's first goal of the season came on a nice tip. Nice to see all her hard work get rewarded!

#3 Star: Lauren Boyle, Ohio State
Both Buckeye goals came as direct result of cannon balls fired by Boyle from the left point.

#2 Star: Ashleigh Brykaliuk, Minnesota-Duluth
There's a remarkable synergy between #13 #21. Brykaliuk and her linemate Stalder are constantly creating scoring chances. Ashleigh also had a four point night, with two goals and two assists. Perhaps the best of the bunch was her assist on the GWG. The dynamic duo won a tough 2 on 2 battle behind the Buckeye net. From down on the ice, Brykaliuk swept the puck into the slot, directly into the wheelhouse of...

#1 Star: Sidney Morin, Minnesota-Duluth
... a wide open, late charging Morin, who bagged the GWG goal.

Sidney also played very well defensively, often controlling the defensive half of the ice with superb anticipation and quickly launched counterattacks.

Next Up: The Saturday Rematch. Face-Off at 4:07 PM EST. Skate With The Team to follow. It's the last game of the 2015 Calendar Year! See you tomorrow at the Ice Rink.

Final Score From Saturday, December 12th

Top Line Shines For UMD
The Buckeyes simply had no answer for UMD's first line forwards. That line started both games and settled things both nights. On Saturday, the trio accounted for all 5 goals, and 6 of 8 Bulldog assists. In the end, there really was no choice: Those three brilliant forwards are Saturday's Three Stars. Buckeye fans may not appreciate being reminded of their jersey numbers, but I'll introduce them as a starting line-up. But first things first. We begin with the Honorable Mentions...

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention, Individual Effort: Claudia Kepler, Ohio State
With patience and composure, the calm Kepler executed a highlight reel wrap-around goal. Yes, the UMD goalie took away the low shot on the short side. But she left a little room upstairs and Claudia nailed it.

Honorable Mention, Teamwork: Maddy Field, Ohio State; Maggie Rothgery, Ohio State; and Katie Mathey, Ohio State
Matheny gained possession of the puck behind her own net, then powered the puck up high in the zone to Rothgery. Maggie sent a crisp breakout pass ahead, springing Field on a breakaway. Maddy had a Field Day with the opportunity; her impressive top shelf shot tied the game 2-2 at that point.

#3 Star: Ashleigh Brykaliuk, Minnesota-Duluth
At Left Wing, From Brandon, Manitoba: #13 Ashleigh Brykaliuk.
A hat trick of assists earns a star for Ashleigh. She was the only player to earn celestial recognition both nights.

#2 Star: Lara Stalder, Minnesota-Duluth
At Right Wing, From Luzern, Switzerland: #21 Lara Stalder.
Normally a pure hat trick, including the GWG, is enough to win top honors. But there was some spectacular competition in the rematch.

#1 Star: Michela Cava, Minnesota-Duluth
At Center, From Thunder Bay, Ontario: #24 Michela Cava.
I'm not sure how I managed to overlook Michela on Friday, but she was impossible to miss on Saturday. Slick Playmaking; Sharp Shooting; Strong Two-Way Play; 13 of 21 in the Face-Off Circle. Very complete game by Cava. She scored the first two goals, giving the Bulldogs the lead both times. Assisting on the last two tallies, Michela also played a pivotal role in closing the game out.

Next Up: Happy Holidays To All; But For Now A Good Night. See you January 2, 2016 when the Buckeyes take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. Faceoff is at 2:07 PM EST.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Saturday, January 2nd
Ohio State 2
Penn State 1

New Calendar Year, Happy Result
The Buckeyes got the second semester rolling on a fine note, parlaying a strong defensive effort into a 2-1 win. Good thing, as the stingy Penn State defense allowed only 14 SOG. The low shot totals weren't the result of a lack of effort. We saw lots of courageous shot blocking by both sides.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Penn State Honorable Mention: (tie)Laura Bowman, and Amy Peterson
Nice synergy between the 'Tonka girls. Keeping them off the scoreboard again on Sunday will be a challenge.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Lauren Boyle
I've been mentioning Lauren a lot, and I do like to spread the wealth. But finding a place for Boyle on the list was once again a must. She scored the game's first goal, and had the primary assist on the GWG. Lauren did catch a bit of a break on her tally. Her shot from the left point deflected off a defender's skate, fooling the Penn State goalie. But hey, put the puck on net and good things can happen.

#3 Star: (tie)Victoria Samuelson, Penn State; Shannon Yoxheimer, Penn State; and Hannah England, Penn State
The Nittany Lions had the prettiest goal of the day. Samuelson won a puck along the wing boards, and steered the puck back to Yoxheimer. Shannon sent a perfect cross-slot to England, who was waiting at the back door -- leaving Hannah with an easy tap-in.

#2 Star: (tie)Alex LaMere, Ohio State; and Katie Matheny, Ohio State
Alex didn't get the shutout, as noted above. But except for one picture perfect play, she held the Lions scoreless, which was important on a day when offensive SOG were pretty hard to come by. Tough with the glove and consistently steering rebounds out of trouble, LaMere had a solid outing.

Ultimately the game ended with a Katie Matheny shot block, capping a fine day of team defense.

#1 Star: Dani Sadek, Ohio State
Can't back this one up with stats, and I have to admit osualum86 scooped me on the series thread. But maybe the Force has indeed awakened, and it's strong with both of us. I do believe Dani earned top honors, particularly with her work on the PK.

Next Up: A Rare Sunday Rematch. Face-Off at 2:07 PM EST.

:) ... I can't take credit for this one. The story on ohiostatebuckeyes.com mentioned Dani's shot blocking prowess on the penalty kill in the third period.

Ah. I suppose a cynic would say it was an obvious call.:o

But I prefer to believe that the Force is also strong with Sports Info. Dani too.;)

Nittany Lions Earn Split With Second Period Explosion
Things started out fine, with an OSU goal just 34 seconds into the game. Late in the first period the lead increased to 2-0 with a PP goal. During another PP opportunity early in the second, the Buckeyes were playing with real swagger. But PSU survived the short-handed situation, then caught fire. A short time later, three goals in 6:25 won the game for Penn State.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Penn State Honorable Mention: Remi Martin
Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time. But even so you need the strength and will to win the puck. That was Remi's MO on the GWG, a wild scramble in the Buckeye crease.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Melani Moylan
Controlling the slot on the PP, Melanie bagged the second OSU goal with a nifty tip.

#3 Star: Dani Sadek, Ohio State
The Moylan tip? A redirection of a Dani Sadek shot from the point. The initial Buckeye goal also came on a Sadek blast from the point. Keep shooting, Dani. No doubt Sadek would gladly trade away the two scoring points for a win in today's game. But the scoring production was nice to see, and combined impressively with her defensive effort in Saturday's game.

#2 Star: (tie)Laura Bowman, Penn State; Amy Peterson, Penn State; and Hannah Bramm, Penn State
I gave Bowman and Peterson kudos in my Friday list, and my comments proved to be all too prophetic. PSU's entire first line contributed to the game-tying goal. Hannah got things going with a nice poke check; Laura and Amy did the rest.

#1 Star: Emily Laurenzi, Penn State
Emily's goal changed everything. She nailed the upper right-hand corner from close range, sending the puck dancing around the half-moons. The puck came out of the net hot, so the officials decided to double-check the call with video review. The good goal call was quickly confirmed. Hockey momentum can be a funny thing; but the Laurenzi goal was inspirational enough to trigger the decisive three goal outburst. It should also be noted that Emily earned the secondary assist on the GWG.
