WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

Lindenwood @ Bemidji again tonight. Beavers took game one last night. Rest of the weekend:

Minnesota-Duluth @ Wisconsin

St. Cloud State @ Minnesota State

Ohio State @ Minnesota

Whitecaps are in Grand Forks for two.

Molly Illikainen leads the WCHA in +/- at 15 if you don't count anyone from Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Lindenwood @ Bemidji again tonight. Beavers took game one last night.
FINAL: Bemidji State 5, Lindenwood 3 - All eight goals came in the first 31 minutes with no scoring in the final 29. The Lions took a 2-0 lead less than three minutes in, but the Beavers scored the next four goals. Eight different players lit the lamp, with Stephanie Anderson (BSU) scoring and adding two assists. Lindenwood goaltender Nicole Hensley made 53 saves as BSU outshot LU 58-18.

Re: WCHA Thread V

UMD dressed only 17 players for today's game at Wisconsin, a 5-1 Badger victory.

It was already noted that Lara Stalder, Maria Lindh, and Linnea Hedin were at the Nations Cup tournament. However, Kayla Black was not shown as being dressed for the game.

Gophers beat a very determined OSU 3-1. The Buckeyes played a stiffeling game and played it pretty well. Maybe a bit too much clutch and grab but I have seen worse. Thankfully not of the ugly brutality of last year although there were several nice checks by both sides. Not that enjoyable to me because I prefer the fast, flowing game but one that gave OSU their best chance.

Re: WCHA Thread V

BSU allowed 4 goals to Lindenwood on 38 shots? Chink in the BSU Armour? Probably just some rust, as UW also had rust issues this last weekend.

Rodents blew all the rust off on game 1 with OSU and hung 9 on OSU without Brandt? Wow.

Having seen BSU play teams other than MN (though not WI - I'd like to see that for comparison) I can say unequivocally that BSU plays differently for MN than the other schools I seen them play. Maybe they didn't think they needed to be so tight against Lindenwood & it cost them. BTW - the Gophers would have scored 10 but Blair Walsh stopped by and hit a crossbar in the 3rd.

As for Sundays game: I don't think OSU played any worse than they had on Sat. It looked like MN picked up the pace a little bit and also a lot of the 'unlucky bounces' that happened the day before turned lucky and ended up on Gopher sticks instead of Buckeye ones. The game was a lot more physical I thought. Nothing particularly dirty or dangerous but there was more contact on both sides than 'normal'.

The most fun was getting to watch the sad fail parade outside between periods as people streamed back to their cars from the football game. Several people came in and warmed up in the arena, the concession stand business picked up as Vikings fans discovered Brats don't cost $12 and 9 points is way more than enough to win.

Final Score From Friday, January 15th
St. Cloud State 2
Ohio State 1

Hey Huskies; Get Off Of Our Cloud!
Just kidding; the Huskies and their fans are always welcome at the Ice Rink. And what a great turnout tonight by the St. Cloud fans. Don't know if someone chartered a plane or organized a bus trip, but it certainly appeared that way. Half of tonight's crowd was there to cheer for the Huskies. As the WCHA's geographical outlier, that's not the usual experience for us.

As for the game itself, it was very entertaining and closely contested. During the last five minutes of regulation time, the Buckeyes came on like rolling thunder, only to be stoned by the St. Cloud goalie. In the end, the Buckeyes couldn't get no satisfaction. But we tried, and we tried, AND we tried... ;)

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: Katie Fitzgerald
Tonight's stars are going to the goal scorers. But we'd be remiss if we didn't recognize the St. Cloud keeper. The Buckeye Offense had lots of zone time, ultimately outshooting the Huskies 25-20. But Katie came through with 24 saves, keeping her team in a position to win.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Bryanna Neuwald
Guess you'd call this a subjective pick. But Bryanna seemed have some extra jump tonight. She brought lots of energy to the ice; she won lots of loose pucks. She caught my eye; she earned a mention. So there.

#3 Star: Julia McKinnon, Ohio State
In the space of about seven seconds, Julia won a draw, passed to the point and cashed in a rebound off a Cara Zubko slapshot. Now that's efficient production! Oh, and lest I forget, McKinnon took a little time off to let linemate Claudia Kepler touch the puck and earn an assist.

#2 Star: Julia Tylke, St. Cloud State
The first line Right Wing was a constant scoring threat, and ultimately bagged the GWG. Molly Illikainen started the key play with a nifty tap to Lexi Slattery. Lexi's head-man pass sprung Julia on the counter-attack. Tylke raced into the OSU Zone, the smartly deposited the puck inside the far post.

#1 Star: Hannah Potrykus, St. Cloud State
St. Cloud's 3rd line had a significant impact tonight. Potrykus, in particular, had a hardworking, never-say-die attitude. That work ethic held her in good sted on the game's first goal. While the OSU goalie and a teammate initially appeared to have the puck under control, Hannah just kept coming. While the Buckeye goalie was struggling to finish off the play, the puck suddenly re-appeared between her pads. Potrykus was there to pounce, and steered the puck into the net.

Beyond the goal itself, the play generated an important momentum shift. The Buckeyes had dominated the early going. But in large part because of Hannah's tally, the Buckeyes wound up chasing Huskies for much of the rest of the night.

Next Up: Rematch with the Huskies at 4:00 PM Saturday. Hey now, what happened to our seven minute grace period before opening face-off? Not that it's a serious problem, but those seven minutes mysteriously vanished from this weekend's start times.

Final Score From Saturday, January 16th
St. Cloud State 2
Ohio State 1

You Can't Always Get What You Want
But did we get what we need? Regrettably the answer is no. We needed a win to build on. We got an unforgiving helping of deja vu from the nattily attired Huskies. Goodbye, Ruby Jerseys. No change with this new day. The two games were quite similar, right down to the matching final scores.

BTW, if you're tiring of the Stones references, no problem. I'll be rolling on to something else when the Badgers come to town.;)

Decoding The St. Cloud Cheering Section: Another nice turnout by the Huskie fans, but it now seems clear that no charter plane was needed. The loud and proud Hannah Potrykus Fan Club provided a large portion of the St. Cloud crowd. The guess here is that most of that contingent made the manageable drive down US 23 from Brighton. And for those that did, the trip was clearly worthwhile. Potrykus was the #1 Star Friday night. While Hannah didn't make my Saturday list, she had another strong game.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: Molly Illikainen
Molly was unsinkable in the face-off circle, winning 8 draws in 9 opportunities. She also opened the scoring.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Lauren Spring and Maggie Rothgery
Lauren scored the lone Buckeye goal, cashing in from close range off a rare rebound.

Maggie gets today's "caught my eye with hustle" mention. Lots of great forechecking. Ultimately hard work along the boards paid off with an assist.

#3 Star: Cara Zubko, Ohio State
Both Buckeye goals this weekend were triggered by Zubko blasts from the right point. Keep shooting, Cara. Zubko also turned in an excellent defensive effort both nights. Net result? +1 for the weekend, to lead all Buckeye defenders. Pretty solid number when your team suffers a sweep.

#2 Star: Julia Tylke, St. Cloud State
Deuces were wild for St. Cloud's #2 this weekend. Two points today. Two game winning goals for the series. Two Number 2 Stars. Julia certainly proved to be double trouble for the Buckeyes.

#1 Star: Katie Fitzgerald, St. Cloud State
Today the Buckeyes launched 37 shots at Fitzgerald. But like yesterday, OSU got little to no satisfaction. In most cases, Katie smothered initial shots with ease. With only a single exception, she steered the rebounds away to safety. At perhaps the pivotal moment, the Buckeyes' Kendall Curtis created a turnover and came in on the Huskie net all alone. But Fitzgerald handled that test as well, stoning Curtis.

OSU's Alex LaMere also played very well in the nets, making some positively brilliant saves. But in this goalie duel, Fitzgerald was one save better. Both days.

Next Up: Road trip to Mankato to play Minnesota State.

Re: WCHA Thread V

MSU-Mankato's top defensive pair of Anna-Maria Fiegert and Lena Düsterhöft need to be tagged "The Hindenburg Line."

Yeah...I actually had intended to add some comments, maybe a prediction or two but got interrupted and couldn't get back to it. Should have waited to submit. My apologies for any inconvenience or unnecessary stress this may have caused.

So...here goes. Out on a limb...bold prediction if you prefer, Mavericks get their first conference W this weekend. At least.

Beavers @ Bulldogs...should be a very competitive series. Based on what I'd expect in Madison, a chance for Bemidji to move into 3rd place in the conference.

Don't recall NoDak having much success vs. Wisconsin. UND all time record vs. UW has to be pretty dismal. Don't expect that to change this weekend. Success on the road for the Fighting Hawks last time out. Much tougher task in Madison.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Coming up this weekend:

Minnesota @ Bemidji State

Ohio State @ Minnesota-Duluth

Minnesota State @ North Dakota

St. Cloud State @ Wisconsin

Minnesota @ Bemidji will be interesting. Those darn green uniforms again. Always the epic effort from the Beavers...with a well devised, and executed game plan. Have to play very well to beat them.

Huskies @ Badgers...could get ugly.

NoDak a little too talented for Mankato, I suspect.

Buckeyes @ Bulldogs. If Bulldogs are as under appreciated as some theories have it results here should support that theory. We'll see eh?

Bold prediction...pokey will awaken tomorrow to live another day.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Friday, February 5th
Wisconsin 2
Ohio State 1

It Is, After All, A Team Game
Strong team effort by both schools, particularly on defense. Solo efforts just weren't good enough. Even breakaways were no particular problem for these goalies. Score a goal at all? It took a teammate. To commemorate that, I settled on a tie result in every category. To the best of my recollection, that's a first for the Three Stars.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Wisconsin Honorable Mention: (tie) Emily Clark and Annie Pankowski
At the time, it was just an insurance goal. But it matured into the game winner. Sam Cogan started the play by pushing a breakout pass to Emily. Clark carried the puck into the Buckeye zone, and eventually set up in the corner below the end line. From there, Annie and Emily executed a slick give and go play with Pankowski receiving the puck in the slot. Annie made no mistake.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Stacy Danczak and Dani Sadek
Stacy didn't wind up with the win, but she was sharp for the whole 60 minutes. Her 26 saves included plenty of quality stops. As for Dani, we'll let her represent a fine effort by the whole Buckeye "D" corps. Sadek limited Badger space all night long with hustle, speed, grit along the walls and an active stick.

#3 Star: (tie) Ann-Renee Desbiens, Wisconsin and Courtney Burke, Wisconsin
The Buckeye offense dented Ann-Renee once, but otherwise it was a dominant performance for the Badger keeper. Even with only 13 saves, Desbiens had a major impact on the game with her excellent positioning and rebound control. As for Courtney, her staunch defense mirrored Sadek's effort. Burke and her teammates gave the Buckeye forwards very little room to operate all night long.

#2 Star: (tie)Katie Matheny, Ohio State and Claudia Kepler, Ohio State
The Buckeyes won quite a few loose pucks tonight, including one claimed by Maddy Field on the Buckeye goal. Near her defensive blue line, Maddy directed the puck ahead to Katie. From there, Matheny put on a quick move and a burst of speed, instantly converting an innocent looking situation into a 2 on 1 odd man rush. Next came a perfect cross-slot pass, beating the lone Badger defender and giving Kepler a Grade A scoring chance. Claudia's been there before. She pounded the puck home for her 37th goal as a Buckeye.

#1 Star: (tie)Melissa Channell, Wisconsin and Jenny Ryan, Wisconsin
This 'D' pair bagged the game's first goal on the power play. With over 18 minutes of the 1st Period gone, it turned out to be the crucial breakthrough -- and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Melissa kept a Badger possession alive below the goal line. From there, she sent a backhand pass to the point, somehow putting the puck right in Jenny's wheelhouse. Great synergy between D partners is the only explanation I have for that. Anyhow, Ryan's magnificent one-timer rocketed into the upper left hand corner of net. It wasn't what Buckeye fans wanted to see, but we give credit when credit is due: Brilliant pass, brilliant shot.

Next Up: Rematch with the Badgers at 4:07 PM Saturday. Only three games left in this season's home schedule. Get thee to the Ice Rink.

PGB - I am usually 100% aligned with your three star selections and appreciate the fact that you take the time to do this. It is always well done and your selections take into consideration contribution and effort that does not always show up on the scoresheet. Well done.

Without a doubt, the first star of yesterday's game in my humble opinion was Stacey Danczak. She was outstanding from start to finish. A little rusty early on but settled in and played a superb game. As for ARD, few shots and not many of the difficult variety but she did indeed make a few saves. As for the rest of your selections and honorable mentions - bang on as always.
